Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
When I went on a diet two years ago, I gave up both fast-food and sodas. Haven't looked back since. Now I eat fast-food and/or drink a soda maybe once a month.. tops.

Of course, I still eat unhealthy as shit.... but at least I got that shit out my system. :D

I just had one of those little Yoplait yogurts. This is a rare day where the fridge was absolutely empty and we have to wait until the weekend to buy new groceries. So what's left is basically those little yogurts.

I had one, because I was hungry, and then checked the back of the thing.

High fructose corn syrup? 27g of sugar?

That stuff is poison in a can.

Still have a nice drink from my flask every other week or so.

One of these two fluids can be used for sterilization, because it's a poison. The other cannot.

I can attest to that. I have slightly sensitive teeth due to my disgusting soda habit. I probably drank 1-2 cans a day for 3-4 years. I quit 3 years ago, and I feel much better. Much better. But my teeth will probably never be the same. Damn cola.

The dentist I went to as a kid would keep a clear glass jar of Mountain Dew in the front office, with a tooth in it, and a note card labeled with how many days had passed since the tooth was dropped in the soda. I can't recall exactly, but on average it took a week or two for the tooth to turn into a pile of dust. He'd swap out new soda and a tooth after each cycle was complete.

More than any lesson in my entire life, that showed me what soda does to teeth.

No shit - that's awesome. That's a pretty good way to get the message across.

The same thing happens with a glass of orange juice, anything acidic is bad for your teeths.
I know it's just meant to scare people into better dental hygiene, but it's really in no way a representative of what happens with people drinking sodas or juices.
You just have to drink and eat everything in moderate amounts, and you won't be having any problems whatsoever.

Curses, you beat me to the OJ point. Soda is bad for your teeth, but using an artificial environment doesn't prove anything about the actual effects of drinking it.

Come on.

The primarily criticism is that many people show mild allergies to casein, a milk protein. Not to mention that most of the world's population is lactose intolerant.

I'm not lactose intolerant or casein allergenic, so I enjoy a nice glass a milk from time to time.

I got tested for allergies and it said I was allergic to milk. news to me. I drink it all the time.

I'm happy to say I've been soda free for 7 months. Doesn't seem like a lot but i've been drinking it all my life (i'm 21) and finally kicked the habit.

I'm also thinking that the non-organic stuff can't be good for you with the hormones and all that.

I personally drink a glass of fat-free organic everyday at breakfast :D (can't stand the weird taste of non-organic milk)

Milk is one of the best things out there, however the way the industry works with the requirement of Pasteurization and Homogenization, drinking milk from a super market is only 50% as healthy for you as it could be. Problem is I can get a farm fresh 1/2 gallon of milk for $5, but I can get 1 full gallon of milk from a supermarket for $2.89.

Also, taking away all those essential fats in skim milk and reduced fat milks don't help either.

Also, corn syrup is in everything. The more you do to limit it, the better.

I don't normally drink milk, but when I was letting myself put on some weight a couple weeks ago I thought I would get some raw milk (since I have never had it, and it's supposed to be healthier) Turns out it's illegal in Canada, so that sucks.

I pretty much eat and drink what I want, because I can. I could eat bird food, stay out of the sun, never drink alcohol or take drugs, not go out at night, and not talk to strangers, but I'd rather enjoy the little things in life while I still can. I have a lot more stamina than anyone 10 years my senoir who have spent their entire lives trying to stay in shape. There may be things wrong with me I don't know about, sure. I'll have more wrinkles and maybe die sooner, too. Regardless, age gets us no matter what, so if I can eat five guys every week and not get fat, then I am, because it won't be long until eating like that will give me a heart attack. My point is that while I can still get away with it I will, and when it is time to make adjustments I will (as I have already had to do several times).

I jumped on the quit carbonated beverages thing a few months back, because I didn't like being dependent on caffine. I can't stay up late and ride the caffine high the next day at work without my body kicking my ass anymore.

The biggest problem is bottle sizes. When I was a kid (1970s), the biggest bottle you could find was 16 ounces. My friends and I used to collect empties for redemption and usually we had to pour out the last couple ounces of soda. People just didn't want to drink that much. The regular size was those 8-ounce bottles of Coke, which was the perfect serving. (Also, I don't know what happened to Coke (is HFCS to blame?), but that shit used to hurt when you drank it.) Then came Big Gulps and 2-liter bottles and 20-ounce servings and that amount becomes the norm.

I drink 3 Pepsi Ones a day on average, and I might be avoiding the calories, but I'm definitely not doing my risk of more kidney stones any favor.

My wife and I started actively avoiding HFCS in mid-2009, forcing us to discontinue purchasing just an obscene amount of products. It's incredible how much of that shit the average American consumes. This has cut down our soda intake, as we only purchase soft drinks with natural cane sugar in them - which increases the cost of the soda and, thus, how much of it we can afford. I think we'll end up having about two bottles of soda a month now on average.

Alongside that change we bought a juicer and make our own juice. At any given time our fridge is filled half with fruits and half with vegetables.

This isn't bragging: It's just something we've realized recently and were surprised by how one decision has cascaded into a much healthier diet.

Watch the video I linked to on the other page. While HFCS is bad, theres nothing good about cane sugar.

Watch the whole thing. Theres an entire (very boring) part where he backs everything up.

I'm going to make a new statement for people to disagree with me on: sodas with pure cane sugar are usually just as bad as HFCS ones. The main reason HFCS is considered worse is because it's amazingly cheap and therefor much more common and used in higher quantities. Cane sugar is pretty terrible for you in most of the same ways.

I've read that your body has a tougher time digesting it or something. Not sure if that's true or not, so take it with a grain of salt.

Anyway, does anyone take Safflower Oil? I hear it's good for you.

If you enjoyed the Lustig fructose video, you should read "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. He explains why the "fat is bad, sugar is good" mentality has ruined health and nutrition in this country quite persuasively.

I understand that. I was relating the story because it was a compelling way to make the point. And as a nation we don't have a problem of drinking too much orange juice, we have a problem drinking too much soda. If we had a problem with too much juice intake, or the recommended alternative to soda was juice, that's another thing.

Also, as a kid, it sure did its job. :lol

Fat in regular milk or sugar in low fat milk. Milk has been linked to a rise in unhealthiness as well.

Milk sugar is lactose. Not fructose. People keep saying "sugar" in this thread, but it's fructose that's the culprit. You don't have to make that distinction for soda, but for milk and SOME energy drinks (that are mostly glucose), you do.

On that note, avoid ANY drink that contains "crystalline fructose". Vitamin Water does this, which means Glaceau is playing a trick on everybody. Make you think you're drinking healthy, but it's sweetened purely with the bad stuff.

Kidney stones are pretty much the only thing that could get me to quit soda.
Until then...

Was never a big soda drinker. When I do have one I prefer something like Sprite instead of the heavy caffeine filled stuff. I tend to stick to juice, milk, water and tea.

I've done my share of research on Greek Yogurt and this is just about the most nutritious yogurt one can buy...without buying the flat white stuff that tastes like solid ass. It beats the pants off of anything Fage has to offer.

Fage Total has very little sugar, plus loads of healthy saturated fat and a decent bit of protein. And that stuff you posted has zero fat. I'm sorry, but that isn't Greek yogurt.

It's certainly not nearly as good for you as the dairy industry would like you to believe, and the fact that so many people feel better after dropping milk from their diet says something about it. There are non-milk consuming countries in the world that do just fine as far as the various diseases that milk supposedly prevents. People in this society have a pretty warped view of milk's importance in a healthy diet, like it's up there with vegetables or something. A lot of people are fine with milk in their diet, but a lot of people would be better off without it. I instantly stopped getting the daily runs once I dropped milk, and my acne cleared up to boot.

Also, soda is nothing but liquid candy. Don't kid yourself that it's anything but.

Exactly what I was thinking, but put much more eloquently than I could ever muster.

So what we're to gather from this is sugar causes diabetes. Shock and awe. Soda isn't good for you but calling it "poison in a can" is a crock of shit. I'd rather chug a pepsi than a bottle of lye any day.

Mudkips said:

About 192 ounces of soda and 16 ounces of water each week (and 0 ounces of anything else).

You guys should watch the sugar video.

SHOTEH FOCK OP said:

Milk, theoretically, is not particularly unhealthy for humans. But in actuality, the milk that arrives in American supermarkets is loaded with hormones and antibiotics. Do a little research and you'll see how much awful shit they load into cows to keep them from dropping dead (due to the unsanitary conditions the cows live in) and to have them produce more milk than they naturally would be able to. Much of these additives are transferred into your beverage and can affect you physically. There's no reason for humans to drink milk in the first place, so it makes no sense to imbibe the chemical cocktail that makes up grocery store dairy products.

I spent half an hour in the Social Security building today and 27 of the 30 people waiting would qualify as morbidly obese.

Fage total Honey has more than twice the sugar of Chobani Vanilla, almost the same as a can of Coke, and less than half the protein.

I couldn't care less if it's authentically Greek. I care that it tastes good and is healthy.

And when the heck did saturated fat become healthy? I thought saturated fat's associated with Cancer and heart disease; a cup of Fage has like 90% of the recommended daily allotment of the stuff.

Chobani is good stuff. Healthy, surprising amount of protein, and tastes good. It always makes me thirsty though, but I only ever drink water or coffee 98% of the time so it gets no negative marks for that either :p

I've been eating it for a few months, though my supermarket just got in a batch where the Vanilla flavored cups were actually filled with straight up plain yogurt. It's not anywhere near as sour as the Fage plains, but goddamn, what a rough surprise. :lol

I quit drinking sweetened carbonated beverages back in high school. Something about them leeching calcium from your bones not being good for athletes.

I don't like it that any prepared bottled drink sold in most places is sweetened and has lots of sugar in it. Your only other choice is water, which is dumb.

It would be nice to see unsweetened teas for sale. Seems like a really big potential market and give US and other beverage manufacturers a run for their money.

http://www.itoen.com/

Here in NYC, the only unsweetened bottle tea that you'll likely see is in one of the varieties on that site. I'm not sure how it's like in the rest of the country. Honest T used to contend, but it seems like all of their teas have become lightly sweetened (which is actually pretty good) and their products seem to be leaning a lot more towards juices.

You'd be surprised re: the potential market for unsweetened teas. It's there, but it's not necessarily all that explosively popular.

If you have access to a Japanese market, keep an eye out; Japanese brands pretty much have some major metro markets cornered for the time being.
