man I was whatever about Cloverfield but I loved his apes movie. The sequel is my most anticipated blockbuster next summer aside from Dunkirk for sure. that franchise is proving to be surprisingly consistent.
disagree about let me in though. it was an alright remake but the original was so much creepier.

MI3 has a lot of weird TV-ish closeups and Trek '09 hides a nonsense script with a great cast. I think TFA is JJ's best effort yet on a story and craft level.

Those two walked into the office, sat down, and told Kevin Feige what movie they were going to make. And if you watch the director's commentary on Winter Soldier or any of their interviews, they really know their shit. I'm sure they'd do just fine on their own.

Wow, I really don't get the critical hate for this one, I saw it at a matinee and I was toughly entertained. It wasn't a perfect movie, and I feel like some things may have been butchered a bit through editing.
But overall, the cast was very on point, the characterizations were great, though I would have liked to see the Joker as being a little more heartless in this.
Will Smith felt like he was in top form as Deadshot, and this felt like something you would have seen from him around the time he was doing Independence Day and the first Men in Black movie. Margot Robbie did a great job as Harley. I liked her a lot. she had a few too many one liners. But the actress is fine. Viola Davis as Amanda Waller was a big surprise too, her character was great as the villain. I wasn't expecting her to play as big of a part in this as she did. Jared Leto will be a bit decisive as the Joker, but I do think this Joker will fit in just fine in this universe. The Joker played off well with Harley's backstory and arc.
There are a few weird pacing issues in the second half of this movie and I feel like it was because of cuts made in editing. But the first half is perfect. I love the introductions to all of the main villains, there are some good things here.
I honestly haven't read or watched any reviews on this movie before going in, so I don't know where the critics are faltering this film. But IMO, it is worth a viewing. If you are unsure, maybe save a few dollars and go to a matinee like I did. I honestly didn't know what to expect going in, all I really knew about this film was that it was getting slammed by RottenTomatoes. But I left with mainly positive things to say about it.
Where the Snyder movies left us with some flat characterizations and a few uninteresting leads (except for Batman) , Suicide Squad had the complete opposite effect. The characters really drive this one. But then again, DC always had strong villains. I always felt this way. Where Marvel has the more interesting heroes, DC always won me over with the villains. This is no different.

Given that they didn't direct the airport scene in Civil War and their editing of the film was at times atrocious and unbearable, I'm going to have to pass on that claim.

I like to think of him as a salesmen first, filmmaker second, storyteller third, with artist firmly in the back of the bus.
He did learn one thing very well (from Spielberg) and that's how to sell things. I hate having to say it, because I fucking hate -the writing in - Star Trek 09 and ID (with Beyond saving the franchise, imo), BUT Abrams managed to sell the world on something that had been considered 'unsellable' before that. Unfortunately it was by making everything dumb and loud, but audiences seem to like that these days. I don't know why, and I don't understand it, but it worked, and the man can sell.
TFA was really boring for me too, because it all came to a dead stop once Rey got off the planet and we have to go to reference-town, which is where lazy writing goes to kill curiosity. I would preferred to see more of the empire's graveyard and its consequences. Did anything really change for the people living under it (and then not)? Did the rebels really do the galaxy a favor by removing a single totalitarian power, thereby allowing smaller, potentially more harmful conflicts to re-emerge, etc.
Oh, and of course we need to get to Sheev's Medical Restoration Centre or whatever that thing is called. Because it's hilarious. What's actually funnier about Sheev Palpatine basically running into bureaucratic bullshit (despite trying to be evil. EVIL! ) is that this exact plot is used in an episode of the '90s TMNT cartoon where Shredder actually gets to rule and he's fucking incompetent at dealing with it, so he begs the Turtles to save him from it. It's great. One of the show's finest episodes actually.

Btw, claiming that anyone has taken on the Spielberg mantle is a joke. The man stands firmly alone, and that's a really sad thing when you watch Bridge of Spies and realize that style of making actual good movies is somehow dying. I think it's related to the rise of the cult of the director (or author theory, as a more official name) and the removal of 'directing language' from screenplays combined with devaluing writing in general. As if Generatio Spontanea is somehow back and considered effective this time.
This is relevant in the context of extreme studio meddling, like with SS. I am starting to think both cuts are out there though. Too many people vary from 'absolute hate' to 'thought it was good'. I know that there will always be crazy people, but I really get the feeling people are literally watching different movies, and not just on a subjective level.
