Summon Night 5 |OT| Swordcraft Strategy

I've noticed there's a different message at the anti-piracy screen everytime you boot it up. So far I've had it tell me that pirating will give me either halitosis or constipation, lol.

There are many variations of the message to enjoy and obey. :) One is harder to access than all others.

I've gotta be dong something wrong, cause there's no way this game is this difficult. I can't be this bad at strategy games, can I?
The first mission took three tries, the second was easier and only took one, and now I'm just being decimated in the third battle. I can't even clear half the map.
I made sure Arca and Spinel got some kills in during the first two missions but they're still level 3 and 2 respectively and in this new mission they can't do shit. Spinel is basically a healing machine until her MP runs out (which is super quickly) because her attacks hit for either 1 or 5 damage against enemies with 100-200 HP that dish out nearly 20 damage per attack and everything counters.
I need to use ranged attacks to fight them so they don't constantly counter me for half my health but that eats up more MP which already feels super limited. And then they come and start putting characters to sleep which renders them completely useless unless Spinel can heal them.
In mission two everybody could use their Awakening Enhancement thing and do decent damage but now every single character has it blanked out but Abert and I'm not entirely sure what the conditions are to activate it.

I'm probably missing something huge, but this is getting frustrating. :(

You can run some of the training missions at the Eucross tower for EXP you can use towards levels and skills.

Edit: oh, sounds like you aren't spending your EXP. Go to the Ally menu. As I said, EXP can be allocated towards levels or learning skills. Each character gets their own pool of points.

Edit2: also, EXP is earned as a mission reward, divided among your team. Doesn't matter what characters do in battle, even if they don't kill anything.

I got careless and died on my second fight (first mission?). I feel so ashamed, and a bit annoyed that I can't skip all the dialogue.

Aaaaaaaghhhhh
Thank you. I figured it was something I was overlooking. Chucked some EXP into them, hopefully this'll take the difficulty back down to normal from the "no levelling chaos" mode I was in.

Ugh loving this game! I want this game to do well! I think the price should be lowered to 29.99. People's mind are easy to manipulate. 30.99 seems crazy to some while 29.99 seems like a steal.

Leveling is definitely important! Also, try to attack from a short distance or from the rear so it minimizes or eliminates counter attacks on you.

Definitely use Summon Assist once you get a Summon Cluster stable going. You can really power up the summon attacks to do some real damage that way.

Party skills are important, too. Add PSKILLS from your Ally menu in your room. Some of them happen automatically, and others need to be set in the battle. Swapout is important because you can get an underperformer out of battle and tag another player into the ring that was just waiting on the sidelines.

And yes, doing the training missions will give you exp and special items/attacks, so check them out.

The fans set $30.99 in that retweet campaign, down from the original $34.99, so that's what we went with. Yeah, it's a weird price point, but that's what they ended at, and we're honoring that.

Gosh darn it fans!!! I should have held a banner at my university and job telling them to retweet! Well either way, this game is incredible, thank you and your team for releasing this. PSP GOTY for me.Can't wait to see what else you'll release.

I got careless and died on my second fight (first mission?). I feel so ashamed, and a bit annoyed that I can't skip all the dialogue.

You can turbo blast through dialogue by holding right trigger and X.

(And that first real battle ending if you lose ANYONE is harsh punishment, but it's basically only to teach you to manage your party carefully, very few battles after that have such a harsh condition)

I'm biased, but it's better than all the Vita RPGs this year, IMO. It's hard to understate how awesome it looks on a OLED Vita.

Can someone tell me what to do on the fishing mini game when it asks me to press something like triangle and X at the same time? I was enjoying the fishing until that part, right now I have to do a claw gesture to get then but makes it hard for me to hit the simple ones.

Haven't gotten very far yet but I'm enjoying it. Went with Arca/Kagerou and they seem a great team. Kagerou's healing skills are very useful.
My favourite team-mates so far are Yeng-hua and Cyda (Flootier <3), and Callis is pretty good too because he's easy to set resonating.

Trying to get all the brave bonuses is fun, but a little frustrating when something stupid happens right near the end (that one for not getting afflicted by conditions sucked, took several attempts).
Cyda is an aggro magnet, which is both good for luring people and terrible for that don't let anyone die condition as either she or someone covering her might as well be commiting suicide. I had to do some incredibly cheesy juggling to get the [Battle 5-1 character/conditional spoilers]
terrible two down in the same turn
without losing her or Arca in the process ^^;
Speaking of said 5-1 character/s I really dislike them. I get that they're meant to be cute or funny or something but they're just irritating and I want to push them into a bottomless abyss. Unfortunately I don't have one to hand x_x

Lousily hidden spoilers here for some sort of odd text error in mission conditions:
In the Chapter 5 Mission "[Battle] 5-2 vs
Crimson Chain
" two of the Brave conditions (appear to) involve Pariet but actually apply to (spoiler for character involved in the mission)
Ruelly
.
One is a lose condition (Pariet incapacitated), another is a Brave bonus (Defeat 3 foes with Pariet).
The fact I didn't have Pariet made it kind of obvious to me, but it might be a bit more confusing if someone does. Just thought it was worth noting as it was a little odd.

I'm not doing too great at the multi-button fishing prompts myself, but you don't actually need to hit them at the same time, it usually works if you hit them in (very) quick succession.

You do one, then the other, quickly. Get a better fishing rod (buy it or do side missions at the Eucross where they hand them out for some missions) and it relaxes the timings, making that easier to do, especially when you have to do THREE eventually.

Thanks, I found out that sliding my thumb across the buttons is the way to do it for me instead of lifting my thumb with each press.

On one where you have to do something very specific, I usually turn off Counterattack as the wait action so they don't accidentally kill someone too soon or in the wrong way.

Someone else mentioned this and we already fixed it, along with 4 text errors in the script. Since we have to do another build to fix the Acquire Skill bug and prologue text backlog bug, we're fixing up any text issues found. So if you see something, say something. :)

In that case, start of chapter 6 with Arca/Kagerou at the Resonance Academy, talking to Torque. There's a mis-assigned gender there in Kagerou's speech, he when it should be she.
Torque: "I go back to the cafe, hoping each time to get a delicious drink..."
Torque: "...but nothing comes close to the one you made for me that first time."
Kagerou: "He is the Master, whether he likes the title or not!"
And towards the end of that same conversation once Ruelly joins in
Ruelly: "Ugh...okay...but you guys are starting be a whole bunch of not fun!"
I guess it's missing a "to" ('you guys are starting to be a whole bunch of not fun!')?

Then, also at the start of Chapter 6, Arca/Kagerou at the Resonance Academy, talking to Clesea.
Her third "line" is
Clesea: "The AoP was born Saint Kingdom was disbanded and its resources divided amongst its cities"
And that one is missing a "when" (The AoP was born when Saint Kingdom etc etc etc).

Edit:

And another, also start of Chapter 6.
Police Squad HQ. Police Knight - Doran.
His first line:
Police Knight - Doran: "Crimson Chan has many specialties. One of them is personnel training."
Assuming that should be Crimson Chain.

And a few maybes.
Also start of Chapter 6.
Police Squad HQ. Yeng-hua. Third line, earlier lines included for context.
Yeng-hua: "The special Ouka division I belong to is a unit of select women."
Yeng-hua: "There are other specially organized units like mine, too."
Yeng-hua: "They carry out missions all over the world using the personalized training."
using their personalized training?

And after Chapter 6's
Alley
Battle.
It's the 15th line in the post-battle chat. Logginz (it's his 6th line)
Logginz: "I was thinkin' maybe we should be avoidin' them alltogether-like."
Okay so he's a semi-literate grunt and I'm being pedantic here, but still.
"altogether-like" or maybe even "all together-like", but not alltogether-like.

And last one for tonight, very minor. Still C6, a scene or two after the previous one, but at the Academy now.
"Arca: "So tell me about this barrier. Does it have anything to do with Otherworld powers"
It's missing the ? off the end.

This game reminds me a LOT of Growlanser with the optional objectives.

Also, it's not easy. I can't be the first who thought the MP healing was HP because of the green color.:( Weird design choice.

I paid attention to that in the tutorial but nearly forgot about it. Well, at least variety's good to have.

Wow, super-helpful, thanks. Some of these are due to extremely tight character constraints on the overworld text boxes and a lot to convey in a small amount of space. That Clesia one had to be completely reworded, and it lost a little of the flavor because there was no room to say it *right* in the space allowed.

Gender issues you noted were missed, but were due to not having a gender case in that block.

Want to proof some pre-release games? :)

Ha! I'm glad I wasn't the only one! Playing the Japanese one, I was like, why am I dying when I'm getting all this health back in the battles? Very confusing initially!

Question: I have the party skill called Leader Material equiped since the beginning of the game that supposedly increases my Brave Gauge by 3 when I defeat an enemy but it only seems to work sometimes, usually what happens when I kill an enemy is that I loose 1 BP. Any idea why?

Also, in Chapter 5 Battle 2 one of the lose conditions says "Pariet incapacitated" (my cross is Pariet) but I'm pretty sure that's wrong and it actually should say the name of another character you control on the mission... I know since the character died and I had to redo the stage.

The Pariet one should say Ruelly.

I think the BP loss has to do with being overpowered? I know if you go on too long, you start losing BP rather than gaining. Late in the game I actually died because I wasn't watching my BP and it hit 0.

I never got my code email. :(

Are you on Hotmail or other MS email services (or yahoo)? Those services will delete emails without telling you if they think they're spam, sometimes without even putting them in your spam folder. Did you check the spam folder?

Yes, nothing was in there. I sent you a PM with my info (also an email).

Finally started the game and just made it to Chapter 4. My main team (Arca, Spinel, Abert, Yeng and Cyda) are around 14-17, I haven't made an investment to the skills yet since I'm just spamming exp on Levels, should I start investing on skills soon? What are so "must" get skill?

Do you have to *glare*
...actually pirate it
The horror

Anyways, hoping to buy it in early 2016 if all goes according to plan. Cool game by the looks of it!

Great game so far, but I seem to have run into a fatal error -

Platform: Vita
Playthrough: Arca/Spinel, Chapter 5 Start (also occurs on earlier chapter saves)
Steps to recreate:
1. Load file
2. Enter Ally menu (doesn't appear to be location specific)
3. Select Character (seems to happen on any character in my party)
4. Select Skill
5. Select Acquire Skill
6. Skill Menu opens; immediately receive "FsFont.cpp(288) : EntStr() entry over"
Note that I have NOT triggered the skill tutorial (#15). If I open the menu on Arca or another character with experience points, it will immediately error. When opening on a character with no EXP, the tutorial will pop open but any button input will trigger the error on top of the tutorial screen.

I don't really need skills for now since weapon enhancements and Summon magic are already wrecking everything in my path, but it would be great if there was a workaround or way to bypass the error handler message.

The exact same behavior occurs on my chapter 1 save so it may not be story / skill specific...

EDIT: Tried starting a new game with Arca / Spinel and this error does NOT occur. Maybe my whole save chain is just hosed for some reason?

Is there any chance of including the manual in the PSN package so that you can access it from the Vita livearea?

Not a lot of PSP games on PSN do this, but it's very convenient when available.

I can confirm the same thing is happening on my file. Arca/Spinel but only in Chapter 2.
I can learn skills when I go the menu in battle, but when I try to do so in town I get the above error.

I haven't run into that yet, and I've learned several skills on many characters. I'm using Folth/Dyth and I've accessed the Ally menu in battle, at Eucross, and at Folth's home.

It's a known bug and hopefully it's patched because it seems to be game breaking as apparently once it happens that save is like that permanently. For those who haven't had it yet, it's probably a good idea to keep multiple saves.

Yeah, apparently the best way to fix the problem is by acquiring at least one skill as early as possible. Once one skill has been purchased on any character, the error should not occur... Unfortunately, after Chapter 3 it seems likely that all party members will trigger the bug. Therefore the purchase should be done before then. (you may still trigger the bug before ch. 3 but at least one party member should be able to acquire a skill)

http://www.gaijinworks.com/interact/showthread.php?1035-Summon-Night-5-Help-thread has a discussion on this issue.

Oh well, time to start fresh and R+X everything.

Thanks, loaded up and immediately grabbed one for Folth. Barely started the game anyway, only got the one practice fight done so far.

Ran into the skill bug. Found that if I hit select to change the character portrait before going into Aquire Skill for the first time I can successfully get the tutorial done, get a skill, and I don't run into the problem anymore.

I wonder whether BUYING a skill is necessary or just seeing the tutorial? In which case probably the safest thing to do is see the tutorial ASAP so you don't have to worry later.

I'm assuming that some of the Very Important People and Very Important Events of the past are actually from previous games? C8 character spoiler(?)
Rexx's
whole thing just reeks of "hey look this guy is still around!" style fan service even if it doesn't mean anything to me personally.

And I'm actually really starting to like (villain spoiler)
__Ghift__
. The facial expressions, the smiles while horrible things are talked of... yeah. They're kind of delightfully cracked.
And I have to say, (Chapter 8/9ish spoilers)
the idea that someone was so disappointed about the fact they could only enslave beings with souls that they decided to forcibly possess a soul-ed being with a soulless one so they could enslave and control it by proxy is really kind of horrific.
As are Ghift's battle speeches where he talks about painting souls with nether and enslaving his minions so fully that they're utterly incapable of dying
.
... I like this game >:)

Wow, super-helpful, thanks.
You're welcome :)

I promise I wasn't trying to cause problems ;)
I'm always kind of fascinated with what sort of limits people are actually working with when they mention character constraints. It must be a bit of a nightmare trying to fit things in.
Want to proof some pre-release games? :)
Honestly? I'd be interested. Unless you were joking, in which case *cough* nope, I wouldn't be interested at all ;)

I have a few more from Chapter 7, 8, and the start of 9.
Some are maybes, or might have been stylistic choices, so feel free to ignore them if that's the case.

Chapter 7 (With Arca/Kagerou)

Chapter 7. Resonance Academy. Arca/Ruelly.
Arca: "Oop! I just remembered I have an appointment. I'll see you later, Ruelly!"
Oops!

Chapter 7. Downtown - Savorle Avenue. Yeng-hua/Arca
Arca: "I'm sure Crimson Chain still is planning more criminal activity."
is still planning?

Chapter 7. Revisiting Downtown - Savorle Avenue. Yeng-hua.
Arca: "Not wrong, but it seems like the singers voice sounds...familiar..."
singer's voice?

Or as it turns out to be plural maybe it needs to be pluralised - "it seems like the singers' voices sound... familiar..." / "it seems like the singers sound...familiar..."
Or not, because they probably sound the same anyway and maybe she didn't realise at first? Who knows with those two ~~

Chapter 7. Post-Battle

Ghift
: There is a limit to how much power flesh and blood contain, I'm afraid.
Ghift
: But my research has yielded the best counter for the Summoner's Otherworld powers.
Ghift
: But I get the feeling you have a distaste for my actual methods...
Two consecutive lines starting with But sounds a little odd in terms of flow. I'd probably just drop the first one.

Chapter 8

Silturn Colony - Fuurai Town

Arca: "Waiter! One plate of mugwort mochi, please! And..."
Kagerou: "I'll have the same!"
Arca: "I'll have the mugwort mochi, too!"
(Waiter) "All right! Two plates of mugwort mochi, coming right up!

I'm assuming that second bit from Arca should be "Make that two!" or something similar.

And a little later in the same conversation

Arca: "I was thinking that maybe our feeling was one-sided."

our feelings were one-sided ?
this feeling was one-sided ?

After Battle 8-1, there's a Resonance Academy - Torque talk.
After that one there's a Resonance Academy - Clesea one that has this:

Rexx
: "My only advantage is I'm old and been with the Academy a long time"

It's definitely missing a have (My only advantage is I'm old and have been with the Academy a long time). I guess it could be missing a that as well (is that I'm old and have etc etc).

After that there's a scene skip to the tunnels.

Cyda: "Are you sure you're not being to rash with the boy?"
Should be too rash.

Chapter 9

Chapter 9. The opening section, with Yeng-hua.
Yeng-hua: "But this is not the time to surrender to it. Psyche yourself up and let's go!"
I think that should be Psych, rather than Psyche.

Also the opening section.
Kagerou: "All right, what's the plan for today?"
Arca: "Well, there is someone I want to talk to, so..."
Arca: "Once we've finished our other businesses, let's head to the Academy."
Once we've finished our other business, let's head to the Academy?

Chapter 9. Eucross HQ - Cyda.
Cyda: "Even thought they're my family, the past is the past, and I live for the future!"
Even though they're my family.

Chapter 9. Resonance Academy. Clesea. The second time.
Clesea: "It was founded by the Saint Princess and her spouse...who became the king in the end."
Clesea: "The council and organization was set up by those who agreed these two idealistic youths"
Clesea: "They enacted a cooperative structure with the Eucross and the Silvalier"
(Surrounding lines included for context)
The council and organization was set up by those who agreed with these two idealistic youths?

Chapter 9. Fishing/Lakeside Park -
Rexx
Is that even a spoiler? I don't know anymore.
Arca: "I had the hardest time realizing I might have stopped him long ago..."
Arca: "...but now that he's so far gone, I may be of no help to him now."
The double nows are a little awkward.
"... but now that he's so far gone, I may be of no help to him." / "... but he's so far gone that I may be of no help to him now." ?

Chapter 9 is also the first time I've paid attention to the subtitles on the opening slides. Were they all like that? Price of Aspiration Cruelty of Real is quite a chapter heading but the Cruelty of Real bit seems to be there on the Japanese version so I guess it's part of the image? It's fantastic in a sort of terrible way XD

Yeah, it's a bug no one here or at Sony found in QA, despite many playthroughs. We couldn't even reproduce it when first reported until someone made a video and we copied their exact circumstances and keypresses. We try to change things up on re-plays, but doing things in a similar way sometimes happens on replays even when you try not to, and weird things like this are missed.

If you are having the issue, try accessing the Acquire Skill tutorial from the Tutorial on the Person Room (My Room) menu to clear the flag that you've seen it. That might help.

Otherwise, accessing it from your Personal Room, Pre event or Eucross mission battle, or in the Owner's Shop Ally menu may get you past it. Change up which character you're trying to acquire a skill on if one doesn't work.

It has to do with the way the internal rectangle allocation works, and how it changed for English. Sometimes it will run out of suitable rectangles to display stuff on and freak out instead of making more. We seem to have it fixed now, but are testing it. Once Sony's back from the holidays, we'll get the fix back into FQA and then up on PSN.

Will the physical copies(UMDs) definitely come with this bug or there is still a chance for it to be fixed before production?

A few were stylistic choices, but mostly the early ones you cited. The rest were very helpful and are corrected, thanks again.

The title cards were in the Japanese version, but only partially English. We didn't have layered graphics, either, and there's a very subtle grid and lined texture on the paper. It was a nightmare to make a blank marquee to rebuild the title cards in English.

Here's the chapter 9 one from the Japanese one and then the English, for reference:

And yes, the tone of the game gets darky and twisty towards the end. I really love the way the story starts, progresses, and ends.

Will the physical copies(UMDs) definitely come with this bug or there is still a chance for it to be fixed before production?

We'll (gulp) re-run the test molds to fix this (and a Yeng hua issue two people have reported if we can reproduce it). A shame because we JUST got the physical test molds and were ready to go on making the UMDs, but better to find it and have a known error-free physical version. So the "Ephidel-enhanced" version with the bug fixes will be on PSN first, then the 1.01 UMDs should finally arrive with the same fixes.

BTW, I just remembered to mention that I put pictures of the US pack-in SN5 soundtrack on the GAIJINWORKS forum the other day:
