why are you trolling this thread so hard? Seriously.

given that they beat all other cars in the same class as the S, i dont think they'll have much problem, especially if you spec out a 3 to be 50 or 60k that car is going to be real nice.

Wait the chevy bolt costs MORE than the Tesla? holy shit. Looks like a turd on wheels.

because it looks like a piece of shit.
Again why are you trolling this thread so hard? Why do you care so much about Tesla failing?

All post that doesn't hail Elon, critisize the look, and/or have a different opinion is considered trolling to you guys..

And you seriously think a spec out 3 that is 50k/60k will be better than other cars that 50/60k?.....that class has insane competition.

That's true, but you have to keep in mind, the Model 3 is fully electric.

People are willing to overlook shortcomings

Why would you compare gas cars to electric cars in that price range? EV cars cost more. People are paying for that.

I hope they add a speedometer behind the steering wheel. That's a deal breaker for me.

I drove my sister-in-law's Saturn years ago and it had a similar setup. It was the worst most annoying thing I had ever seen in the car.
yeah but now imagine you don't actually need to drive the car

Oh so don't compare a car with another car?

Don't compare a EV, hydrid or ICE to each other cause they are different?

Oh snap, I guess all the complain about the not having a grill is invalid...cause it's an EV.

Koolaid is plenty on this thread.

Cars have grills so air can pass through and cool radiator. EVs don't need grills because there is nothing that needs airflow inside.

It's not Koolaid, Fenderputty is right. A lot of people are willing to pay more for EV's and even give up features from other cars in the same class simply to completely give up gas and go full electric. I know I am and if I had money to throw around I'd have already pre-ordered my Model 3. Some people just feel that strongly about moving away from fossil fuels.

Do you know what a car grill is for? It carries much more function that just looking cool

The exterior is growing on me, but I still can't get over that interior. It's awful. Still tempted to put down a preorder in the hopes that they'll change it...

It also doesn't need air for the fuel injection air / gas mixture.

Oh I guess they had it wrong with the model S then....

They put it on the model S because that's what people are used to seeing. This looks like they're trying to phase that mindset out.

That's definitely me, there's plenty of savings here, just in fuel savings alone, but I hope it can be a success so it creates awareness around the world that we should cut down on emissions. It's especially important in China, if EV catches on, there may be improvements in other products and even in their manufacturing. What drives a lot of Chinese businesses are profit rather than sustainability but Tesla aims to do both and Chinese businesses love to mimic successful western style businesses so I really hope it does well. The Chinese businesses can be pretty stubborn and do things their way, you can't just tell them to go reduce their emissions. But if you show them you can make billions that's incentive for them to clean up their act.

Absolutely. 0-60 in less than 4 seconds, most likely. For a sedan that seats 5 there isn't much that stacks up to that for 50-60k. The competition will all be 20mpg or less, so the cost to operate will be far more than a 100+mpge EV.

I think the interior is not finished yet, looks incredibly empty, unlike their model S and model X.

Also I don't get the comments on that the car is ugly, everybody's entitled to their opinion, it's a very safe design, looks like a typical modern family sedan. It's discrete. It's anything but loud. It's also US$35k. There are way uglier cars in automotive history.

Looks great and isn't outside of my price range if I was interested in buying a new car. But the area I live in, it would get broken into or stolen before long, guaranteed.

Come on people that interior is clearly not final. Have you ever seen a modern interior with a an object with 4 sharp corners on a dash board? The drivers head would take a corner of that screen right in the temple. It is clearly a prototype and just like the S and X it will be mounted flush in the dash and not sticking out. The public in general is desperate for a glimpse of the car but you know some percentage of the population are just going to shit on it for issues that are obviously not final. It's the same in any industry I working in gaming and its the exact same shit. You release a beta with the clear statement that you want to flush out some issues with online and the first thing that happens is people bitch about issues with online and say the game is shit.

20mpg or less? That sounds like terrible mileage for a midsized sedan.

+ your post seems to suggest that all that counts is 0-60 in X seconds and mileage. Edit: Just as an example the interior looks hideous, especially that screen...

180,000 orders so far, thats a lot of guaranteed revenue. Not many people going for the base model too.

‏@elonmusk
Model 3 orders at 180,000 in 24 hours. Selling price w avg option mix prob $42k, so ~$7.5B in a day. Future of electric cars looking bright!

They put it on the model S because that's what people are used to seeing. This looks like they're trying to phase that mindset out.

So people are not allowed to criticize the look?

What if they put a grill back? Will people back peddle? Oh hail Elon!!

Wait...from what some people are saying here..you are not allow to compare them cause it's EV vs ICE.

Funny thing is that I never even said the car was ugly. I said the model S is safe and boring. Then people here slammed me calling my car ugly.

.

Criticize the look all you want. I don't really give a fuck. A grill no longer has any practical. In fact, getting rid of the grill probably helps the aerodynamics.

I just said you should be comparing EV's in that price range. A fully electric vehicle is a feature people are willing to pay a premium for. So saying a gas car in the same price range has other features is meaningless. People who are buying this are willing to sacrifice whatever those features are for a fully EV vehicle. This thing is miles ahead of other EV vehicles in that range.

So...by your logic going by your past few posts anyone that doesn't like your criticism is "drinking the koolaid"

Well, I thinks the problem. It looks plain. Like a car you'd get from Ford or Mazda. It doesn't stack up with the Audis, BMWs, Mercs, Infinitis of the world that it'll be going up against in that price range.

Don't get me wrong, its the best looking entry level EV by far. But if they wanted to compete with the entry level luxury cars, this seems like a missed opportunity.

Just an example of how it will be better than comparable ICEs. Nothing with an engine is accelerating as fast as the 3 and getting comparable mileage.

Dude, I see a lot of people here who criticize the model 3, and they are being slammed as a troll...I'm just stating my observation.

I never called the car ugly at all. And I got made fun of cause of the car I drive.

All the people in here that are really going after Tesla seem to all have something in common.

What a surprise.
Who is going after tesla? Why? Because people are voicing criticism? And what do they have in common?

Why is this thread getting so reflexively defensive to any criticism of the car?

It has an ugly ass and a weird nose. Tough shit if you can't handle people's negative opinions. The car isn't ugly but to me it lags behind a few competitors in its class aesthetically. Again, tough shit if you don't like that.

Obviously it's not a design that will appeal to everyone but it is most certainly not the OMGTHISISTHEUGLIESTCAREVER that some people here are making it out to be. But that doesn't just go for this model, it's the whole tesla line. It's not supposed to look like a bmw or a Mercedes, it's supposed to be slick, modern and clean, and this model, to me, is actually the nicest they have yet put out.

I can't get this car until I get a house with a garage. Until Elon can figure out that problem, the Model 3 will never be mass market in urban areas.

How is it possible to order a non-base model though? The website just gives the option to reserve the car, not a particular model.

You pick the details at a later date.

Here's what it says when I log into teslamotors.com:

"Your Model 3 was reserved on 3/31/2016. You'll be invited to configure based on the date of your reservation."

I think that was just an estimate from Musk that the average price would be around 42k. You can't select options yet they didn't even say what they are.

I really really like what they've done with the car, and I'm so glad they managed to put in a large screen to give it that Model S feel. (the 17" screen is one of my favorite things about the Model S). I'm not a fan of the trunk (it seems small and porthole-y) and I don't like how the screen seems to be tacked on the front rather than integrated, but (at least for the screen) that looks like something they can change before it gets released. It looks so similar to an Aston Martin or a Porsche Panamera though. So beautiful.

Hopefully in a few years I'd be able to grab one, and by then there should be a whole lot of superchargers and destination chargers to make use of for long trips. Heck, maybe (wild dreams here) they'll depreciate quickly like the Volt and be even cheaper.

What is the supercharging?

I'm curious if I go on a long trip (5 hour drive) how I'd charge the thing without stopping overnight.

Tesla has a network of proprietary fast chargers (called Superchargers) that can (for a Model S) replenish 80% of the battery capacity in 45 mins or so (it's slower for the last 20%). These enable you to stop for a few minutes and recharge while on a trip and are typically located near malls, fast food spots / restaurants, etc, to give you something to do while you wait. You can see more info and look at the map of current and expected ones here

Depends on the availability of supercharger stations as well. I have a garage, but there's also a supercharger station between my house and work. If I could go there once a week to fill up while grabbing a bite I absolutely would.

Btw, much of what you pay for in a luxury car, quiet, ride, spacious interior, integrated electronics, acceleration and performance, is intrinsically part of the 3. Many luxury vehicles are literally heavier, pimped versions of Camry, Jetta, Accord, et al.

Anybody in Texas considering this? I'd like to know what process you need to go through to even consider a tesla in Texas. I can't get it now but when I was curious to get one it would require importing from another state.

So what's the current setup for charging stations like? Are they mostly in California? If you were driving a Tesla 3, how viable would it be to go on a long road trip (say from the very south to the very north of California)?

I have two neighbors on my block with exterior charging stations. One has a shared driveway and the other strings a cable over a small tree on his grass verge. Both have Leafs.

It isn't about the aesthetics though.

It is the constant comparison to ICE cars in a similar range while totally ignoring the reason someone would purchase a Tesla in the first place.

We get it, you still love ICEs. Nobody is taking them away from you. But the complete obtuseness as to why someone would want a Tesla is silly.

Most of the criticism I have seen(not specifically aesthetics) comes from motor heads. Tesla isn't making these cars for motor heads.

There are a few superchargers on the way:

I think if you live on the coasts you're probably going to be okay. It's the midwest that has the biggest gaps.

Just curious, are you looking at preordering one?
