Th Witcher 4 Announced | The Game Awards 2024

Ciri can only teleport. She can't take potions because she never did the ritual.

Maybe putting oil in the sword and thats it.

edit: She can't use signs too.
So they are gonna fuck up the lore to give her more gameplay options or we are gonna have a much more boring character to use.

Sound like a win\win...

Why does she look like a man? 👀
I think it's just a pre-rendered cinematic trailer. We don't know how her in-game model will look like.

But lore wise, I guess this is quite an older Ciri than the one in Witcher 3. Also, she probably has undergone the Witcher trials else she wouldn't be able to use potions and cast signs like she did in the trailer.

Late edit: The game's director has confirmed that she has indeed undertaken the Trial of the Grasses.
Last we saw Ciri she was a young woman facing her destiny. But now, as depicted in a new cinematic trailer shown at The Game Awards 2024, Ciri is a fully-fledged witcher hunting monsters for profit. Kalemba explains that, following the events of The Witcher 3, Ciri has undertaken the famously painful Trial of the Grasses which has mutated her into a powerful and resilient warrior. She’s ready to take on a whole new journey in The Witcher 4, which is the first part of a planned new trilogy of single-player, open-world RPGs.

KInda obvious who didnt get the main point of Witcher 3. Its not a hero's journey. Its the father/protector preparing the real hero to go on her journey.

Anyway, the writer for Edgerunners co-wrote the trailer. Hope he writes some quests for the real game as well.

Witcher 3 was always meant to be Geralt’s last story. It’s nothing new. Anyone who doesn’t know that has obviously never played the game or paid attention to the story.

And it’s not like CDPR are being “woke” making Ciri the protagonist. It’s one of the endings in 3. So they’ve been thinking about this somewhat for the last decade or more…

It’s a CGI trailer. Go watch the ones for Witcher 3 and you’ll see Geralt doesn’t look like he does in game. We haven’t seen Ciri’s in game model yet.

The game is obviously gonna be set many years later so she could have had the trials and training. We don’t know the exact lore yet. She might not even have those special abilities anymore.

I’m super hyped for this but it’s a long way off. Just glad to know the exact title and that we get to play as Ciri.

It's a cinematic trailer so I'm not judging its final look on that. It's CDProjekt though so it'll probably look phenomenal and it seems like they're partnering with Nvidia once more so it's all good.

As having Ciri as the main character, it's all good for me. I'm currently reading the books and almost done with the 6th. Ciri is a fantastic character.

The trailer whilst great, showed us nothing wrong haven't seen a million times before, it was literally a Witcher3 side quest in cinematic form, Ciri is a great character so I've no issues if she's the main protagonist but I would also love the choice to play as Geralt, would've been nice to see more instead we get a short film and now have to wait years for the next snippet of information

Ciri is a great character. She is the natural choice for a sequel.

But the changes to the face is making me think about when they almost messed up Geralt in Witcher 2 (see below). Thank god they fixed that before release.

They told us like 8-9 years ago that Geralt’s story is done. Time for something different.

It's a bit of a problem if you make the father 100 times more interesting than the hero though lol.

Based on the article on IGN, it looks like they just decided to pull "well after Witcher 3 Ciri underwent through trial of grasses and is a full witcher now". If you will look closely on that trailer she also uses Quen and has witcher eyes. I dunno man. All of this feels kinda cheap to me
Lol so butchered the lore for their strong female lead. What a surprise.

Not only did she undertake the trials as an adult who have 0% survival chance, she’s also a woman, another 0% survival rate.

Even this looks terrible, Christ.

I like Ciri, no issue with her being the protag.

The dialogue is just bad and set up of the trailer being ‘white man bad’ - just fuck off! How are these writers getting gigs!?

Yeah, I thought it would be Ciri or they'd let you make your own protag. Perhaps Geralt will get his own playable sections like Ciri did?

Nah ? Witcher 3 was about deep world with interesting characters, dialogues and lore. Choices was one of biggest flaw of game (as deciding not to throw a snowball could dimetraly change your ending, just stupid ;d)

It's set in a society which is basically Medieval Europe during the dark ages, it's a fairly accurate representation of some of the darkest parts of the human story - sacrifice, burials whilst still alive and other such superstitions done in the name of cleansing and rituals.

We saw similar moral dilemmas in the very first story in the Witcher books involving Geralt, Renfri and the mage Stregabor. My point is its fairly consistent with what we've seen before.

If it's what your claiming to be "white man bad" trope, then surely we would also see characters of colour, especially in a central role.

They also butchered the lore to make the first 3 games, but that was okay because.... reasons?

Have you seen "Killing Monsters" trailer for W3? like 10 years ago....Was CDPR also then "white man bad"?

Loosening it up is fine. This is comically against the lore and by far the most egregious example. Not only do women not survive, it’s also even worse for adults. Somehow, an adult female survived because, reasons?

Sure lol.

Bartosz Sztybor co-wrote it, per the tweet above. He wrote the excellent Cyberpunk Edgerunners. I agree, though, the vid wasn't very interesting or well-written. Just a basic reveal of Ciri as the lead, doing Witcher things, with a questionable Ciri design.

I think the story bit here is more about the typical ignorance of rural villagers leading to injustice.

If it wasn't for the scar, I swear I would never have guessed that's Ciri, I'm not feeling it, it looks bad, not because Ciri is the protagonist, it's just that this Ciri presented in the trailer makes no sense in the lore of the franchise.

Brother they had the whole Witcher universe to tap in to for this trailer. The Witcher 3 trailers were fucking insane.

6 months in to the invasion, Nilfgard’s Legions have pierced the heart of the Northern Realms. They hide them. Blood soaked fields, windswept wastes. A lone wolf rode these broken lands. The beast slayer, a whirlwind of rage and steel. They say he was a man obsessed. Chasing memories, faces, sense. But amidst the chaos he could only follow his heart

This is simply dog crap as a reveal trailer.

Cool cinematic, but Geralt is Geralt.

It was expected for Ciri to take the lead, but those are some insanely big shoes to fill in.

As for her design here, and considering the atrocious designs we've got in many other games, I'm fine with it. There are some changes, sure, but I don't think they are too damn drastic.

Bruh, they just entered in production....from where do you want to have gameplay scenes....

I have no doubt they'll explain how she went through and survived the Trial, probably within the first 10 minutes. Being as she's also of elder blood, who knows what explanation they'll come up with, but having Ciri being the main character with her powers from W3 would have been comically OP, they had to find a way to nerf her to a more traditional witcher level.

That was a badass trailer. Love the entire concept of what was happening.

I’m generally not a fan of the main protagonist we’ve grown accustomed to being sidelined, but we’ll see how this goes.

At that point, just make another male witcher? Or simply make this a spin-off where we simply don’t play as a witcher. Those mental gymnastics to justify this clearly stupid decision is what doesn’t sit well with me at all.

My problem is that all the series staples hinge on the protagonist being a witcher. Potions, decoctions, mutagens, seeing in the dark, enhanced physical abilities, etc.

Ciri has her own powers, but they aren’t those of a Witcher, so this still wouldn’t make sense. I still wonder what potion she drank in the trailer because witcher potions are highly toxic in no small part due to their base almost always being a strong alcohol that is so concentrated that it’s dangerous to humans. How Ciri can drink those without the biological mutations to neutralize the toxins is a mystery.
Do you all lack imagination? Time obviously passed between Witcher 3 and 4, she could have got those mutations. No one remembers that even Avallach survived the trial of the grasses?

He survived one part and it fucked him up. He didn’t go through mutations because elves tend to die as well.

I get it, creatively they want to go forward and tell the story from another perspective but a man can miss his gruff Geralt
I will definitely miss him too, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Geralt have a massive part in the story, even if we don't play as him. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Geralt take over in Witcher 5 depending on what happens in this game.

Gives me hope, agreed that this wasn’t interesting.

I'll miss Geralt, but TW3 was the perfect send off. Excited to play as Ciri though and not some random create a Witcher like some thought we'd get.

Ciri looks great.

I was really afraid we'd get some generic character creator, where half the players will create some hideous amalgamation that barely looks like a human. Not every game with RPG elements needs to be Skyrim.
