I think Shinji is a good protagonist. Sure he's on the insufferable side, but it works in the context of the story.
K-On! is well made fluff, there is far worse anime out there. Spend enough time in the AnimeGAF thread and you will understand.

I haven't followed anime in a long time so I'm not hip to whatever gets played these days. I did watch kids on the slope due to watanbe, jazz and kanno. Also I peeped a few of the new lupin episodes, that shit is all style and no heart tho. Plus they turned my girl fujiko into a whore basically.
