I just had my professor pull a classmate aside after class to speak to him about all his weird statements about black people. The funny thing is I think he feels comfortable doing it because his best friend/room mate (who is a cool dude) is half-black. Its not outright racist mostly he just mentions black people for no reason. Such as when asked where his best friend was he said " are you talking about the black version of me" or that when he wakes up in his room they share all he sees is "black people". Its annoying inside humor stuff just said loud enough to get laughs from those around him and if anything Its aimed at his room mate who I am not even sure identifies as being black himself.
The part that affects me is 5 years ago I would of took the kid aside myself and put him in his place but now that I am a bit older I just ignored it since it felt like a waste of energy because it wasn't outright racist. Am I becoming LL Cool J'ish?

It's a really bad excuse to begin with.
Like being into some streetpunk band that associates and celebrates nazi imagery and trying to say you only wear their shirts to support the band and not the nazi ideology. You need to take it one step further.
