I don't think 40 push up a day is excessive. Good form is essential. Palms should be a little wider than shoulder width apart. If you are feeling discomfort, go to the doctor. Pushups are a relatively low intensity workout, so any pain should probably be looked at.

There indeed is a FitGAF and that isn't too many push ups at all. Kind of hard to do "excessive" push ups. I'd bump it up to 50 per set. Work up to it, of course. But once you're doing 50 in a row, you're going to be pretty stronk.

Dips on parallel bars are a superior pushup. Try to do those instead. Two chairs work if you don't have access to parallel bars. Begin with arms extended, nonlocked and completely supporting your weight. Back straight, head straight, knees slightly tucked,. Dip down under control, try not to shrug the shoulders, and keep going until the angle your elbow makes is slightly smaller than 90 degrees. The return to the original position is the active phase of the workout. This is your range of motion.
