The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Yeah, game is cool for a buck. I'll even throw an IAP to get some weapons since I already got my $1 back and then some.

They shooting feels really good. Zombies are really well animated and the weapons have a good "oomph".

And boy, does the game look good. Infinity Blade 2 surpassed.

Well, I went ahead and spent some gold fingers on the M4, and it definitely makes things a lot more manageable. But really, as much as IAP can be a real turn-off, I feel like Madfinger did a pretty damn good job balancing things in a way so that there's something for everyone. You can technically grind a bit to buy good guns, purchase them with IAP (a la gold fingers), or use Tapjoy (like freemyapps) to easily earn gold fingers to buy the IAP guns. So really, it's almost impossible to complain on that front. I've never been shy about criticizing IAP models in the past, but this is something I can get on board with. Plus, damn, for a buck this game is kind of ridiculous in its scope. It's still just an arcade shooter, but the variety of missions and environments really go above and beyond a dollar app.

I'm trying to think of any PikPok games where that was really an issue...

I'm referring mainly to having to generate additional assets to properly support different resolutions.

But ultimately, it comes down to wanting to reduce dev costs up front and support costs on the back end.

I'm FINALLY almost done with the normal levels of Where's My Water (I have like, 10 left...*whew). I can't believe how good this game is. Seriously. I never would have thought I would tri-duck every level, but here I am, 10 levels away.

So good.

Just went on a buying binge to get all the games I see everyone talking about but never tried for myself. So I now have Where's my Water, Squids and Kingdom Rush. These best be good GAF!

Hey these games are all pretty good so far :) they're kinda all what I was expecting but they're very polished and enjoyable. I should listen to you lot more often :P

Kingdom Rush could easily be a $15 game on PSN/XBLA -- it's that good. Squids is almost a console-quality game in its amount of content and presentation. So, for $3 you got a lot of gaming. Squids WW and KR, for me, made this one of the best weeks on iOS. Can't believe those games are a dollar -- it's fucking criminal.

If I were to get only one, should I get Squids or Squids Wild West?

I asked myself the same question. I went with the OG Squids because that way if I lik it there'll be more slightly evolved content for me to play later on. It's harder to go back and play originals when you start with the sequels I find.

Bought 5.00 worth of Gold in dead trigger.

1 to support mad finger and 2 it's really not a lot to get more enjoyment out of the game.

Bought the money, xp and speed upgrades. A little disappointed the weapon upgrades for gold weapons require using gold too, but it seems it's a better idea to just buy a more powerful weapon than quickly upgrade it.

Squids WW + Squids come to a whopping total of 3 dollars.

I would choose Squids WW only because the gameplay is largely the same and you save a buck (???)

If you like it, then play the prequel (???)

The $1 price is only a launch sale. It will go up to $2 like its sibling

This was the closest iOS discussion thread I could find so I'll post this here. I'm thinking about upgrading to an iPhone 5 come upgrade time and I have a random question:

Is $50 + tax worth it for unlimited everything (SMS/MMS, data, calls, etc) in an iPhone Plan? Is that a good deal or is it par for the course?

Just got a iPod touch off Craigslist for the cheap (80$) just to see what all the fuss was about. What are some good games (dont feel like going through a 300 page+ thread.). I own a 3ds/vita so my expectations will be pretty high. So far I have infinity blade(I like it alot),zenonia 4(it sucks), gta 3(unplayable IMO) and final fantasy 3(never played the original. What's different about the ios version?) And a few free games.

Real Racing 2 is a good racer with nice visuals, that game only requires touching the screen to break and tipping the device to steer.

Hmm...Madfinger posted on TA NOT to buy the money boost yet, as it's glitched and not working. They're telling people to wait until after the update to purchase it.

Unfortunately, they also lock the weapons by level, so even if you have the gold fingers to spend, you can't buy the better weapons 'til later. I ended up buying and upgrading the M4. I'm pretty satisfied with it, though. I'll probably just save my cash for a better weapon later, as the rest of the weapons that require gold aren't all that attractive to me anyway.

I thought it was odd I wasn't getting a lot more money.

Im assuming they'll make it retroactive and it will work after the update even if purchased now.

Was Squids ever free? I feel like someone posted it going free once, I click on the link and see the art style, closing it out and never giving it a chance. heard it talked about so much. Click it again today to actually see the type of game play and...fuck, I fucked up passing this up for so long.

Bought Squids yesterday and I must say I'm impressed, it's a lot of fun and pretty. It's clearly one of the best game I ever played on iOS. Just enough RPG elements and just enough action gameplay.

Man, haven't been in this thread in foreve. Squids WW and Dead Triggr sound like a well spent $2. Does anyone know how Dead Trigger runs on a 4 though? I can't wait til I can upgrade to the 5, a lot of these recent 3D titles really look like they'd tax the hell out of my phone :/

You will lose some eye candy, but other than that the game remains beautifull while running smooth. Very well optimised game.

Took the plunge on Dead Trigger last night and I'm very impressed with the controls, however, I am gonna gripe about a few things, especially the IAP. The game gets tough fast after you lose your M4. The game always "recommends" a gun that you can't buy yet, and when you finally get enough money to buy it, it recommends the next. That's a cheap system. I think they absolutely nailed the controls, but what about down the sights aiming? Would've felt more satisfying to me. I also have never had to headshot a zombie in a game this much before. 3-4 headshots until it goes down? Umm that's kind of bullshit. The story also would've been much nicer if they put a little more emphasis on it instead of having to read through all the tiny text.

However, I am still enjoying it. The mechanics and controls make the game fun to play. Just a couple stupid design choices make it less than a truly great game for me.

Welcome to the fold

I'm about to finish the story of WW. Surprisingly it has me hooked. I hope they continuie this series, or finish the story that's laid out.

edit:

Just beat it... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK I love Squids. Great ending.

For some reason Big Win Baseball has me sucked in. It kind of relaxing to watch your little guys play baseball and have no control over the outcome (outside of what cards you play beforehand).

I don't know if I would recommend it, but if you like baseball and don't mind a passive game it can kill a few hours for you.

Yeah, the aiming seems a little strange to me, too. You can be aiming right at their head, fire, but it registers as a general body hit. I'm not a fan of that, since it makes head shots feel more luck-based than skill-based.

And yeah, the gun progression really pushes you toward IAP, and if you don't buy your weapon, the game gets hard real fast.

I got hooked on Big Win Hockey.. then it just got boring after awhile. Baseball is my sport though so maybe I should give the series another go.

I still need to beat Squids 1!! ahhhhh

I wouldn't worry too much about the IAP guys. As soon as you have money to buy a new weapon (Scorpion) and a new slot it's a smooth ride, and that shouldn't take long. I'm a few hours in and I never felt the game was so hard I had to get an IAP weapon (quite the opposite, I'm finding the game to be a little easier than I would like) especially because for every weapon you can buy with gold you have a fairly equivalent one that you can buy with cash, and it's easy to get cash.

Though I'll buy some IAP anyway just because I want to support and buy every weapon. All in all I think the IAP system is well balanced, this is no Glu Mobile game.

Also, better weapons are far more accurate.

Some tips:

- Scavenger missions are great to get cash. Just before you drop the last box find a good spot to pick enemies, one headshot at time. Headshots and limbs dismemberment give you extra cash, $10 and $5 respectively.
- With automatic weapons, if you want headshots, instead of spraying try small bursts.
- With the shotgun, try to go for the arms and then the head to maximize your profits.

Yeah, normally I'd be up in arms about the way they handled the pricing. I hate it when an app is a buck, but you can't fully enjoy it or finish without purchasing IAP -- I'd rather they be up front about what I'm really getting and charge accordingly. However, in this case, Madfinger gives players other ways of affording the IAP, using similar app trials to freemyapps. I think it's a model that works all the way around. Folks who don't want to do that can pay outright or grind, and others can spend five or ten minutes trying out apps that will afford you enough gold fingers to buy and upgrade the M4.

I think the way this game seems to handle headshots is percentage based -- at least that's the impression I get. The hit box is purposely huge to make shooting practical with the virtual controls. I'm cool with that.

Tapjoy hasn't worked so far for me (I get a 502 error every time), and neither has any of the other options inside the Bank. They all just take me to the twitter/facebook page and I like them, come back to the app, and nothing has changed. I'm a well-weathered freemium fan so I know my way around these schemes, but nothing has worked for me. Annoying.

Has anyon here given Tour de France 2012 a try? http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tour-de-france-2012/id531126189?mt=8

It just came out last week at 4.99 and is already 2.99 now lol. I'm a huge sucker for the PC series Pro Cycling Manager/Tour de France, which it's related to (not by the same dev though, I think?), so I was wondering if it's any good.. Seems like it's still really buggy atm and doesn't contain the campaign mode that the PC game does, but I was just wondering. :P

Yeah, I think it's just the site today. I was fooling around with the Tapjoy through the game yesterday and racked up about 125 gold fingers. Hopefully, it's just some site problems that will be resolved soon. But yeah, even if you just pay enough to buy the M4, you should be set until the latter levels.

What do you mean percentage-based? Like only XX% of perfect headshots will be registered as actual headshots?

If that's the case, that's pretty irritating.

Anyone else getting a 'cant connect to itunes store' error when trying to search on app store?

Edit: dont worry, it seems to be working now
