The Last of Us |OT| It Can’t Be For Nothing (Spoilers)

I have to say the part between the opening scene (which I thought was great) till when you get Ellie was really boring. Even though it feels the game is just about to start in earnest, I already needed to take a break at that point. Hope the pacing improves, going forward.

Can't say it's all that clear. He looks noticeable younger at the start of the game. Could very well be in his late 20s.
Well he certainly doesn't look or sound it to me, I guess it's possible in terms of the canon, because it's not it has to be very accurate visually in that sense.

So I came back from a brief hiatus of the game as many of the regulars in this OT (if they are still here and haven't moved on to the spoiler thread) know I thought the game was pretty awful. I am 41% through the game now and I still think it is mediocre. I do like now I have a shotgun my shitty controller aiming isn't too much of a problem any more. I am still not engrossed by the story or the characters, other than the occasional wise crack from Ellie leaving me with a little chuckle.

I think on reflection my brother agrees with me, the game is still a little buggy as I found out when
trying to get the car started Ellie got killed but the game just kept playing with the camera focussed on the truck. That happened a couple of times
.

Overall something like a 6.5 or 7/10 seems fair.

The game is a lot better if you play the Persona 4 soundtrack alongside it I found as I played through the parts I already had played after the save game glitch screwed me over.

You have terrible taste in games.

ban me for that, I don't care. Had to be said.

I absolutely love tlou, but gameplay wise, its much much weaker than re4. Tlou is a 6 while re4 is 9 or 10. Pacing during the first half is not great. The start is way too slow and the intro too manipulative, summer dragged on for too long, and the game doesn't reach god tier until fall hits.
From a presentation stand point, tlou completely trumps re4.

How do you get levels next to your name and how do you got dots next to that in MP? I got to week 3 but it still says only level 1.

Early to mid 50s would be my guess.

~18-20: Has Sarah
At the university, Joel mentions that he never went to college because he had Sarah instead.

~30-34: Outbreak (Sarah looks about the same age as Ellie, so 12-14 years old)

~50-54: 20 years later

93% done now, gatdamn at Winter. Amazing stuff.

I still don't get the RE4 talk at all. This is NOTHING like that game.

So did anyone trust David at any point?

I was wary of him at first, because...well, he's another human. But then he was fighting beside us. What a brilliant move by ND.
Then once that campfire scene happened...

I believe most people are referring to their pacing moreso than the games playing alike. Few games manage to get pacing right. Especially nowadays when it's so common to just flood your screen with enemies every step of the way, so there's never any time to breathe and you never really build up any tension.

The character designer really had Ellen page stuck in mind when s/he made Ellie, from the name to looks. Even after the redesign, I still see Ellen page most of the time when I look at Ellie.

I think Joel is in his late 40's. It's possible to be a teen dad.

A friend of mine's son is graduating high school this year. She's only 33. I pegged Sarah anywhere between 11-13. Joel and her mother could have had her when he was 15/16. I peg Joel being at least 48, 50 tops.

Dammit, I just want to get home from work at play it. Work is crawling by today, because there's jack shit to do in the office today now that we've submitted our latest update to our game for approval.

All this freaking talk about RE4 I need to play the damn game now. On what systems is it available ?

Try a demo first. Adjusting to its archaic control scheme will very likely pose a significant barrier to your enjoyment. And honestly, RE4 was always somewhat overrated thanks to how good looking it was for its day; its full of atrocious acting, lame quick-time events, and basically marked the end of the RE series actually trying to be scary.

Gaming has moved on a long way since 2005, and frankly comparing it to TLOU in 2013 does it no favours at all.

I was referring to both. RE4 is breakneck pacing from moment one, with the village segment happening within 15 minutes, and a constant stream of action dripping with atmosphere. TLoU is much slower to start and has a lot of breathing in between(not a bad thing, mind, just a different stride).

I don't really know how else to word it aside from RE4 is gamey as hell and fully embraces it. Instantly skip cutscenes, easy to replay ridiculous amounts, etc. The Last of Us I would describe more as 10 seconds of massive tension(vs. humans) and more slower build up and constant unease vs. infected. If that makes sense, small intense peaks of action coupled with a lot of down pace to act like a completely different roller coaster experience against uncharted, and also doing similar things storywise.

God's had his chance.
My dad is still plenty active and healthy at 73... If he had to live through a zombie outbreak, become a survivor, learn to hunt and live in a harsh world then I'm positive he could have looked/performed as well as joel does in the same situation.

It's amazing what constant activity and not being "comfortable" will do for your natural lifespan. You just gotta not get bit to death.

My thoughts...
I have to admit I got a bit bored with tlou especially in summer, the basic set up is almost always the same, a town, a building, you sneak in, collect stuff, break some necks, a shoot out here and there. There are 2 or 3 types of enemies, with each having 2 to 3 subtypes. One real boss fight in totoal. It gets old pretty quickly. re4 had a shit load of enemy types, boss battles, completely different settings, and manages to surprise and engage the player from start to end. Just before things get stale, re4 throws in a little something to spice it up. The variety in tlou and re4 is night and day in comparison. Not to mention the level design, the control and especially pacing.
I love love love love tlou, but gameplay wise, its no re4.

Fools are always so certain of themselves, but wiser men so full of doubts.
Can you stealth kill clickers, i.e. go up behind them, grab them and stab them with a shiv?

I haven't tried it but I'm curious if its possible because I can't hit SHIT with the bow if they are moving.

Thank you for the link.

And thanks for the warning, I think alot of these old games usualy get's looked on with a fair chunk of nostalgia by it's fans claiming that it's GOT4EVER so I will heed your warning and download the demo first and get a feel for it before I buy it.

Thanks !

Yup, as long as you sneak up on them and you have a shiv, you can stealth kill them.

Yeah, that works. I personally didn't want to burn through shivs like that though, fully embraced the amazing bow.

Headshots aren't entirely necessary either. Boost it up a bit and body shots will drop people.

Second time through...noticing a LOT of things I didn't see first time through, game is jam packed full of detail. Good to solve lots of little mysteries I couldn't quite on my first run, like the safe next to the pickup truck, and the red X on the door of Regal Apartments. Here's a couple of little Easter eggs I've found on second pass.

- On the approach to the school, big area full of runners, there's a cute cuddly giraffe on the floor somewhere. :D

- Another Uncharted reference, there's a book or DVD or something next to Bill's porn stash, with the word 'Shambala' on it.

Thank you. Nostalgia is a bitch, RE4 was great for it's time but it certainly aged badly.

TLOU would so much better without the water sections.

I absolutely love this game and it's quickly become my favourite of this generation. I'm a big fan of "cinematic gameplay" and The Last of Us quickly absorbed me inside of its harsh world. The gameplay itself isn't revolutionary, but in combination with the presentation, music, scavenging and slower pace to the action it'll be hard to forget.

I truly felt like I was controlling a character in "The Road". Joel and Ellie grew on me and by the end I was emotionally invested in what happened to them. Some gamers may be turned off by the slower sections which have you just walking around talking and looking for parts, but I enjoyed every minute of this game. Even more when reflecting on the experience later.

Personally I haven't been so excited about a game's quality since playing Ocarina of Time at 8 years old. This is what I want from gaming, it felt like reading a good book. If there's a sequel, I hope ND focuses on different survivors so as not to take away from Joel/Ellie's story. This could've been so cliche ridden but it managed to be a blockbuster with heart.

Finished the game. I think this has replaced RDR as my favorite game this generation. It was such an incredible experience.

As for TLOU vs RE4, I have to think about it. Going to play it again soon for sure.

Yeah but gameplay wise, they're totally different games. You can't compare them. There is some horror elements, but that's about it

RE4 is all action, tense action sure due to being outnumbered, but then again you're doing roundhouse kicks, fighting giant Gigantos and a super mutated kid/thing with a rocket launcher, spanish super zombies, fighting lake monsters with harpoons, solving annoying puzzles...

TLOU is all about stealth and struggling to survive not just because you're outnumbered, but because humans are fucking bastards and infected are mindless killing machines. Enemy types aren't the focus, they are a means to an end. That end being the narrative

So besides the pacing (I don't want games to be nonstop action from the get go like RE4), TLOU just intergrates tense gameplay and a masterful narrative perfectly. That's why RE4 feels antiqued and TLOU is overall the better game IMO

Almost done with the game I think, just started Spring. Winter was really amazing, loving the whole game so far though. The writing and the performances are just top notch. Never liked the uncharted games all that much but I'm so glad they made them now. Little things they did in uncharted 2 like the village scene when your just talking interacting with people really shines here. Watching the Ellie walk into a room and sit on a couch and start a conversation with another AI really helps sell the world.

So I'm excited for a second play through with a better understanding of the mechanics but I had a question about stealth play, so when I play I will stealth kill as many as I can before getting seen then kill everyone conserving as much ammo as possible, but is anyone actully getting through whole sections without any combat? I feel like no matter how sneaky I have to fight a lot of the time?

Me too. In the toy shop
with Sam and Henry, you can see Ellie pick up the toy and put it away.
I love that kind of detail.

Them playing darts blew me away. It was just so natural and realistic, never felt scripted at all

Why not? Is it better to slow walk around for 30 minutes before getting to play?

Okay so does throwing a brick at someone to stun them alert people? Like if I see a wacky zombie girl walking around who has awesome hearing and can still see me, can I throw a brick at her from behind and then walk up and choke her out without alerting the herd of maniacs?

I was wary of him at first, because...well, he's another human. But then he was fighting beside us. What a brilliant move by ND.
Then once that campfire scene happened...

I was very wary of him a first as well. As Ellie and him fought together, and he saved her life from random infected attacks, I began to trust him a bit more. As soon he said that about a older man and a young girl, I was like "oh shit."

It's amusing to me that David was played by Nolan North - I didn't realize until the credits rolled, and was like WTF. xD

1. RE4 has lots of slow moments.

2. TLOU factually has more puzzles than RE4.

3. RE4 is glitch-free if you play it normally.

4. You don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

5. You should replay RE4 to know what the fuck you're talking about.

I just looked at my save file and I'm 30% through the game. I'm at the part where you're hanging upside down - it feels like it should be 10% maximum! Can't believe I'm a third through the game, and I thought I was taking it slowly! Wow, should've bought this in a couple of months when it'll be half price lol.

So pretty visually though I want to stop everywhere and look around but it's so tense, I'm scared a clicker will pop out round a corner! It's very sparse in terms of what you can actually do though, it's super linear with virtually no exploration. A third in to the game those scores and reviews seem wildly over the top to me. It's a very nice RE4 style third person survival horror, but "Citizen Kane" it ain't.
