Multiplatform publishers have done this at the start of just about every new generation. Suddenly it's a big deal, I guess.
Yup and I'd like to know why :|
HD collections and remasters are useful and important.
They help new gamers to play something they didn't years ago, they help those who had another console to play the games without being forced to buy an old console, they are also good for those who want to play a better version of a game they loved.
If I go out right now in a movie store, I bet I would find movies from 1980s, even remastered in HD, in DVD and BD. I myself bought a couple of Blu Ray movies that I had in DVD and it was damn worth it. This is something that rarely happens with games and even if I find one I have to own the console, I could purchase it on eBay but I doubt the average customer would do that.
You could argue that a better solution exists and it's called backward compatibility but it's another thing and unfortunately it's easier said than done sometimes.
These collections are a good way to keep alive great games over the years. Not all of them, that would be crazy, just the best ones. One year or 5 or 15 after the first release makes no difference, I would buy tomorrow more than a game from Wii if it has a decent HD makeup as well as Vanquish 1080p 60fps on PC or RE Rebirth and so on.
The only bad thing is that they take time and resources away from new projects, I can understand that.. but that's all.
