Never has a movie made me laugh so hard. I was literally in tears throughout the movie XD. Batman was so damn funny. The whole cast was really good. And I couldn't stop marveling at the animation. It was incredibly impressive to me.

The ending was kinda weak, I thought. I mean,
a cliffhanger about Duplo? Really?

I wish Bionicle had a better presence too, it's appearance in the movie felt demeaning as a joke.

Also explains why in his mentioning of the LEGO worlds Vitruvius just skips over Duplo ASAP. He doesn't like his Sister's toys.

I'd like the sequel to have themes about segregation and hate, or something. Like, duplos are trying to be integrated into normal LEGO society, but all the normal legos hate them.

Just got back.

Dat animation.

Dat epic Legoscapes.

Dat Batman.

Dat low blow at neoliberal meritocracy randroid cultists who literally live in Cloud KooKooLand.

Am I misreading the submarine scene, or
did it fall apart due to the disparate building styles not meshing together thus causing leaks?

It looks like there are multiple themes going on:

Everyone really is special, if they believe it.

It's good to not follow the instructions and go with your own style

but

It's also alright to go ahead and follow the instructions.

and

Parents, play /with/ your kids! Did you never hear that Cats In the Cradle song? Seriously! And don't glue that shit down. Legos are made to be broken down and rebuilt into something else. Jeez.

I think that all of those themes can be simplified into "everyones special, embrace who you are and you can do anything". Even the "it's alright to follow the instructions sometimes" one, because emmet was embracing his simple minded self.

And with the parents thing, Legos are meant to be a tool that you can use to embrace who you are. When you treat them like static models and don't let your kids play with them, you're doing it wrong.

No that's what I got from it as well. The whole point of that sequence and them building the homogenous spaceship is that all of the characters have pushed their individuality too far, to the point that they can't work together

If you consider that the movie is also about making a movie, that submarine is representative of a failed project where all the creative people butted heads against each other and couldn't come up with a working product, whereas the later homogeneous spaceship is a project in which the creative people reluctantly agreed to follow the instructions of a leader and managed to make something that worked.

To echo everyone else, this movie was awesome. I loved Batman being an asshole and Jonah Hill as Green Lantern was also great. I was dying when Morgan Freeman returned as a ghost on a string.

I think it was already mentioned in the pages past, but Film Critic Hulk has a fantastic article on the themes of the movie and why it's great.

The problem with Lego kits combined with kids is that it's too easy for parts to disappear. Good luck building something to "spec" with a couple custom parts missing. My 10 year old gave up playing with legos because his little brother kept running off with chunks of his book built and self designed creations. It sucks knowing you can't rebuild something again.

Yes and no. If you're really care about being able to build everything again replacement pieces aren't that expensive. My mother took an entire summer recently to sort through all of our LEGOs, build everything, and order replacement pieces for everything we were missing, which was super awesome of her.

It was a fun film; silly, lighthearted and genuinely sweet.

That said, God damn is this movie going to move merchandise for Lego. Why didn't we all invest heavily in Lego stock before this movie came out.

Sadly, or may be it's actually a good thing, they are privately own company. So they don't have to listen so much to silly shareholders investors want only to keep profitable segment of a company and limit their creativity.

Anyway going to take my wife to see the movie this afternoon, it will be my 2nd watch.

On further reflection, I really dug that the villain was redeemed rather than completely defeated. That's not something you see often in Western animation.

Thinking about this movie this morning, something else that occurred to me: why does the Think Tank exist? It doesn't really serve any plot purpose that just locking up all of the Master Builders in cells wouldn't fill, and its not like the scene where they think up the speaker plans is really necessary, I know I and the rest of the audience wouldn't find it jarring if they went straight from Bruce Wayne convincing Business to get speakers to Emmet and Wyldstyle carrying them inside. So why "The Think Tank"?

The Think Tank is where Lord Business traps all of the creative types and forces them to churn out bland blueprints for him to produce.

When you look at it in those terms its barely even a metaphor.

God I love this movie.

i'm not going to lie biznis kitty and lord business' full armor suit were the main reasons i bought it.

metalbeard looks awesome. i already have the motorcycle and the SWAT car.. i want bad cop. i have his parents now.

Just got back from seeing it. What a film. Batman's song was too good, had me laughing so much. I'll have to watch it again sometime and find the references that I missed.

I didn't see the real world stuff coming, I was expecting the one above to be a cgi moment.

Also, the BT broadband advert and the confused.com advert shown before the film were both lego animated which was a great touch.

Finally, I was a bit disappointed that there was no Chase McCain cameo. But there's always the sequel.

Loved this movie, but I felt the live action parts dragged a little. It was fantastic fun though, you could tell it was the Cloudy guys.

It's used to make instructions for the buildings and stuff. Saves Lord Business time from doing it.

I'm glad I stuck around for the credits, Chris Pratt's acoustic guitar version of the theme song was great! Fit in with his Parks and Rec persona.

As a Bionicle fan, I was just happy to see it at all. Made me go through my old tub of parts to build a spaceship.

I do kinda wish one of the Toa got a cameo among the Master Builders. Or maybe one of the older Technic sets like the Robo Riders or Slizers.

Finally got round to see this. Really enjoyed it. One reference I liked that I didn't see mentioned was the four transparent red poles that came down when they were scooting all the master builders into the back of the police cars. A nod to the space cells from the old Space Police sets.

They actually showed two of these when I saw it in the cinema.
