Is anyone using the smart cases?

Apple swapped mine for a smart cover and I live it more

Althought I think it's playing with my 3G signal

the reviews from people have been pretty "meh" from what i've seen. are you really liking yours better? i got a smartcover in may with my ipad 3 so i wasn't really keen on buying another one. i have applecare+ so i'm not really worried about it getting damaged to be honest.

I do so far!

Only thing it's a little loose, maybe by about 3-5mm. And the edges are a bit hard! Other than that I like it

We don't have AppleCare+ in the UK

ah. i assumed most major apple countries had gotten applecare+ now since canada had it when i bought my ipad 3, but not when the 4s launched this past october. we usually get stuff late.

i'll have to go check it out in the store! yeah, it seems most of the impressions say it's a bit loose. kind of weird.

I've purchased 5 or so stylii and recommend this to anyone who asks - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0064REJ3C/?tag=neogaf0e-20

it's a bit smallish, so i usually clip it to my shirt pocket or inside my pant pocket. the nub is a traditional rubber capacitive ball, but covered with a soft wire mesh that glides over the screen like butter and has zero dead spots along the tip. it always draws straight lines, will expand and draw 'fatter' lines depending on the drawing program you use, and as a bonus features a traditional ink pen tip on the opposite side. i use it every day on my commute to and from work on my iPad, only putting it down when i need to use the keyboard.

highly recommended.

It doesnt slide around, but it's mildly noticeable. Try it and see,but I just like thr assurance I can out it down on any surface now

Thanks! I guess the Wacom Bamboo Stylus comes out on top. I've downloaded the Paper app and love the look of it, whilst it's not the most feature packed app. Was thinking of getting a proper stylus to use it with.

I haven't tried the Bamboo yet, but I would really like to. My Adonit works great, and I really love it for drawing and writing. I took the rubber "grippy thing" off an office pen and put it on my stylus, FWIW. The only negative I have with it is the little disc at the tip is really noisy if you are using it in a quiet room (like in a meeting, etc).

Looks interesting, how accurate is it? With the squishy rubber tips, I find that it is hard to get precise lines and they don't seem to work well with my small handwriting. I am curious about that mesh tip, and the price right now is great!

Can you guys recommend a rugged case of the new iPad? Because of how it is used, there is a good chance that it will fall to the ground several times. What is the best way to protect the glass from shattering?

That's the one I have. Not bad at all. I mostly use it to grade papers or make notes on PDFs. Works great in the notability app especially on the new iPad.

Girlfriend wants one and I can use one for work, so I think we're getting an iPad.

Questions:
- there's no reason to hold off, right? nothing pending hardware-wise or some known problems?
- any *good* ways to mark up/highlight PDF files? is the screen big enough for this purpose?

Thanks.

Hey guys, just got a new iPad for my dad and trying to set it up before I gift it to him. He is going to want to take this thing to his Korean Catholic church and use it to read verses and sing songs etc. Is there Korean Catholic bible app that includes the hymns as well?

You're good. Now's the time to jump, otherwise, wait until next spring. And yes, it should be big enough. I could be mistaken, but I believe iBooks loaded with PDFs should do the trick with highlighting. Anyone else please correct me.

There's a bunch of bible apps on the App Store. At this point, it's just the matter of picking one that suits you. I did a quick search for a Korean bible app, and got one for $4.99 and it looked pretty detailed, but I'm no expert.

This. I didn't realize how fucking anal I had to be about my iPad out of habit until I got the smart case. Its so much nicer being able to just set it down anywhere.

Obviously it's not specific to this case. I will keep it but with the looseness I can't imagine it's the best case available.

I essentially didn't pay for this case, but if there are better all in one cases I'm open to suggestions.

Ones I've seen are ugly thick faux leather looking shit

Sounds like you're planning to share. And I hear something about work? A. It doesn't share well, and B. It's not a good laptop replacement (IMHO). If these two things dont apply to you, jump right in.

Yes there are some decent PDF readers and some support highlighting. Readability at its size is a plus with the great retina display. It has speed issues trying to render magazines and things though (they are slow to render, especially in 3rd party PDF apps).

Well, she played with the iPad at her grandma's house and was impressed, so now she wants one (she likes playing iOS games on her iTouch).

Our anniversary is coming up so we were considering getting an iPad and splitting the cost as a gift to each other. She would just play PvZ and Tiny Tower and the like (in the evenings I would think), and I would probably bring it with me to school during the day for reading PDFs, occasional notes, web browsing and such.

This is more of a how-can-I-get-productive-use-out-of-an-iPad, as I'll end up purchasing a proper laptop later in the year for real work (programming, etc.).

At least, this is kind of the idea. I haven't used the iPad yet myself.

At the risk of asking a really broad question that probably deserves its own thread: my dad just got a new iPad. What are the must-have apps and things to get? His main interests are politics, news, listening to music and podcasts, and baseball. He could probably use some organizational or reading apps that let him download news and info from the web. I know that's pretty broad but when I load up the App Store I'm pretty overwhelmed by the ridiculous number of choices for everything.

Podcasts I recommend Downcast. Great for managing subscriptions. For music, are you talking about streaming playlists? If so, go Songza or Pandora. Really enjoying Songza at the moment, lots of quirky lists to explore helps to discover a lot of music.

Any of the major news sites will have their own apps, you can consolidate sources (or news feeds) into apps like Reeder, for example. Stuff like Flipboard or Pulse will present them in a magazine or more graphics intensive type layout..

MLB.com At Bat is supposed to be pretty comprehensive. App is free and has good content. 15 bucks for a year lets you watch or listen to games IIRC.

Thanks, I'll look at those (though he already has MLB and the full subscription for watching games). I think I was more asking what are some apps that make cool use of the iPad and do interesting things. For example, I heard about an app that lets you learn about the solar system by exploring it in 3D or something like that, and I found SoundPrism which is a music-making app. I guess I'm asking, if you wanted to show off your iPad with apps you couldn't (easily) do on a PC, what would you show?

Huh, no education discount for the iPad? :X
Not online, but of you're near a retail store, try in store, you might be lucky. My wife, a teacher, got me 3% off mine, and either 5% or 8% off the smart cover. It basically took £20 off the total, which isn't great, but with a £35 free back to school apple voucher too (teachers get them apparently too!), it's not bad at all.

Flipboard definitely has that wow factor, IMHO. Just load up some RSS feeds of stuff he likes to populate it before you show it him.

What about google earth, or something that does AR? Not something I tend to use a lot day to day, but it is very shiny to show off stuff (in the UK I use nearest tube [which shows signs for the nearest London underground stations floating in midair using gps and the compass] to try to sell my parents on the benefits of an iPhone for them once they retire and start exploring)

I have an jailbroken iPad 3. Is there any app that will allow me to turn EDGE/GPRS off? I want to be able to connect only if 3G is available. Thank you.

Got the Apple wireless keyboard today. Works very well with the iPad while in the stand formation in the smart cover. Like a full blown laptop replacement right now.

Althought it makes me want to go all in with a trackpad and giant iMac.

This is the (Cheap) keyboard I bought. I wanted the Apple one, but I need to prove to myself that I would actually use it first.

I still can't replace my laptop with it, I have yet to find a good app to manage multiple servers via RDP like I can with my laptop.

This is what I am using (black though).

I wish it was leather, but it looks pretty nice, is super thin, has the smart case functionality, and I love the metal strip in the back to keep the cover open.
I have this in black too. It's fantastic. It's hella thin, works with my smart cover and when I'm mobile it holds the smart cover in place thanks to the magnet on the back.

Edit: Wait, I have the Union, just the back cover.

Might actually go with a white 4th gen iPad after having a black iPad 2 and 3. Saw one at bestbuy and it actually looks good with the retina display...crazy because I didn't care for white with the iPad 2.

I've used it a good bit for long emails and papers/academic journals. Still just view it as an accessory but I definitely love having the option. Good laptop replacement for me.

Hi guys, I'm looking to buy a TV series from iTunes (Community S1. Yes, that rock on Mars was very comfy), but I want to be able to stream it from the cloud since my new iPad would probably be what I watch it on and each episode is 1GB big in HD! Is that possible or am I going to have to buy the DVDs (no BDs for this or Breaking Bad here)?

In the US and most places where iTunes sells TV episodes and movies, you should be able to stream after purchase. I can't confirm since I'm running an iOS beta that has a lot of iTunes features disabled. Test it out with a free episode of something random.

I go to the Purchases tab of iTunes, look at my purchased shows, click on the Cloud icon, and all that gives me is the option to download the HD/SD versions (tried with a few shows, including the first ep of Community)...

What if you go back to where you can purchase it in iTunes? Does it change from a "buy" button to a "view" button?

Nah, it just says Download.

Looks like a no-go then. I'll probably just buy it anyway unless I find the DVD for really cheap. Just feels a bit inelegant having to download, delete, and redownload as I go. Ah, well.

Cheers!

iTap is pretty great. That's what I use at work for connecting to my desktop and servers. Two finger right click and scrolling just like the Mac. Pinch to zoom, fast, etc

I guess I was wrong. I could've sworn I streamed some parts of Back To The Future. I know that the Apple TV just streams everything, and it runs the same hardware.
