Yep totally agree, that dump truck handling... Just no.

Anyway my stack of games have arrived, been playing some WWF no mercy, vigilante 8 and goldeneye mainly.

That motherfucking bee swarm boss thing on vigilante 8 on level 4. God sake it's bad enough having to kill off 5 opponents, one of them a fucking school bus, then only to have that bee buzzing, armoured to the fucking hilt truck constantly spinning me in the air like twister raping my health hasn't done much for my patience.

Goldeneye, well it's superb, really enjoying actually going through it and completing missions rather than my youth of going over mates houses to play multiplayer and getting destroyed by the one person who owned an N64, who is hosting the evening that owns the game.

Frame rate though... Holy shit. Just for shits and gigs, I popped all 5 remote mines into the shitter where the enemy guard is on facility, walked back a few steps in the vents, detonated the mines and could literally smell the 3rd party ram expansion burning. Worryingly that game doesn't even use the ram expansion...

I wasn't really a fan, honestly.

Well, I mean, I was cool with it in Goldeneye, but Perfect Dark asking me to do an escort mission with a bomb to blow a wall in an area I didn't feel was clearly marked ahead of time followed by a stealth segment into an area I'd never seen before under a strict-ish time limit that would force me to start the entire mission over (and over, and over, and over) if it lapsed - on the easiest setting - was roughly where I drew the line. Goldeneye just spawned more gunfodder if I messed up the stealth on lower difficulty settings, so I could at least get my bearings for the tougher difficulties/added objectives through that.

They do, now that I think about it, although I recall them generally leaning more toward Goldeneye than Perfect Dark in terms of expectations.

I managed to pick up one of these Gamecube style Hori controllers for a somewhat reasonable price so I figured I would post some impressions. The controller is much smaller than I expected, but still comfortable to hold. The analog stick is slightly bigger than a regular Gamecube analog stick and it is also a little looser. The d pad itself is more comfortable than a Gamcube d pad so it also has that going for it. Playing with this controller is great, there are no dead zone issues or any drifting really. The biggest (and really the only) problem some may have with it is the size.

Overall it is a great controller and I recommend it to anyone that won't take issue with the size. It is definitely worth it if you can find it for a decent price.

ah, doujindace - i had trouble with my RGB modded Duo-R but i'm apparently in the minority. the RGB is said to be easy so i don't doubt he's done it just fine, personally.

Good to know, although sucks your Duo-R has issues. Will probably bite on this then. What was up with your Duo btw? And did he help you out?

it wasn't always great about reading discs - roommate adjusted the pots but it was just finicky. doujin's engrish wasn't so great but he even sent me the specific screwdriver to try to get it sorted - ended up dropping keith courage @ PCEFX (great dude) to fix it and it's been perfect since, absolutely beautiful system.

bapho typically sells em modded like that too, id say it might be cheaper with him given the shipping there but i'm not certain. but yeah, since it's a cart-based system & kinda built like a tank anyway, id say if you pull the trigger you're prolly gonna be good!

Ok, thanks. Glad he was helpful despite his engrish, and most of all that it now works!

I actually got my Famicom modded from Baphomet, but does he have a shop somewhere? Or would I just PM him asking him to get one, mod it and send it?

the latter - he's had modded units on hand for sale before, but if not he might need a unit sent in...it has to be an early/specific model though! i had mine done by the guy who modded my saturn out in cali but bapho does tight work (as you know), make sure to hit him up as an option!

Bapho told me that he's not really comfortable with modding Duo-Rs. That might have changed, but he told me it'd be cheaper to just buy one from doujindance.

Do you know if the Everdrive v2 will work with 64DD roms? Tried searching but it wasn't really clear.

I can't get a better source than this: http://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=3491.msg33097#msg33097

So the 64DD was purely a diskdrive? The N64 did all the processing work, was there no hardware of such in the 64DD making it more powerful?

64DD is a disk drive, and also a Real Time Clock. Nothing else. The Expansion Pak was actually made for the 64DD for easier loading, it's actually MANDATORY. (The same for 64DD cartridge ports.)

I should also mention that 64DD cartridge ports DO NOT USE RTC.

Bangai-O for N64 worth picking up?

I like it. It's balanced differently from the Dreamcast version as you will need to collect fruit to recharge the special attack. I don't know Japanese tho, so at the end of the day I will play the DC ver for the goofy plot. Supports 240p fine on Dreamcast and it's cheaper so I recommend going that route if you have the system.

Its pretty expensive on the Dreamcast too though, unless you settle for the Pal-version I guess.

English is my only language, but I won't pretend to understand the WTF levels of dialogue in the NA localized version of Bangai-O.

The dialogue is absolutely bananas. But I fucking love that game. In fact.....

Yeah, I've been playing DC Bangai-oh on and off this year... and I don't know, can you actually call that game translated? That dialog is almost completely unintelligible most of the time! :D

Wrong. In many cases, Perfect Dark has a secondary way to complete the objective.

In that specific mission, you do not even need the crate to blow up the wall. Any explosive will do, either grenade, a Dragon's secondary mode, whatever. Also, the wall's weak point can be easily found by the xray scanner you have (and that's if the carved X by Jonathan is not obvious enough). In a really cool touch, if you didn't kill the mechanic from the previous mission and only subdued him with punches, he will open the door just above where you start the mission, if you shoot or make some noise while standing in front of the door. If you chase him, you will find a room that overlooks the area 51 exterior (where you were on the previous missions). On a bench will be dual Phoenix guns, with an explosive secondary mode.

Have you guys tried the last version of Not64 for the wii?
It works a lot better than my real n64

While i love Not64, it really depends on the game.
I mean, playing Perfect Dark, GoldenEye, 007 TWINE with wiimote IR controls absolutely improves the experience. Ditto in games that run well/perfect (Mario 64, Mario Kart, Starfox 64, Waverace etc.) , wiimote & nunchuck translate well to n64 pad (if you imagine nunchuck is n64 middle prong and wiimote dpad is n64 c buttons, etc).

Other games, suffer form glitches that get in the way.
If only original Wii64 team was open to sharing the source files and merging with the not64 fork improvements, an even better coplatibility and performance would be possible.

BTW, for those on android devices, i strongly advice you to check the beta 3.0 version on Mupen 64 plus AE, it runs almost all of N64 library really well (for example Perfect Dark with Glide 10th anniversary plugin renders the light coronas and spycam correctly) and has a nice gui with boxarts.
It is available by the developer here:

Hey guys, need some advice on a game I'm close to buying.

I'm in Japan and have managed to locate a copy of Bangai-O for the 64, it's boxed and under 10000 yen. Is the game worth picking up? I loved the DS version and I didn't mind the XBLA one. Is the XBLA version just a remake of this or are the different in some way?

I was just messing around with N64 emulation last night on my phone. I booted up Goldeneye 007 and it was a bit buggy. There was also some slight flutters in framerate (on games like Mario 64). I'm wondering if there is a good solution to playing games like Conkur, Space Station, Banjo, Goemon, etc. that doesn't require me to hunt down an N64 and spend oodles on the carts.

Soon I will play 1080 on my N64.
I did play it back in the day and remember to have quite enjoyed it (I like the racing aspect more than the tricks).
How does it compared to Avalanche on GC?
Never played the sequel.

Different games completely. It's a fantastic game so grab it.

Excuse me? I know what I played. You don't get to tell me I didn't experience what I experienced.

Of course. But that doesn't take away from what i said about PD having different ways to complete the objectives. In that specific example, there are at least 3 ways as i outlined in the post above. Just because you didn't know about them doesn't mean they do not exist :). Anyway, i didn't mean to come off as rude.

You must tinker with the settings, initially. My phone is an ultra crappy 1,2ghz dual core with adreno 302 but even i can ran most n64 games at a good speed and with the glide64 10th plugin.
Make sure to set these options:

Flicker reduction hack: Disabled
Audio plugin: mupen64plus-audio-sdl, 2.0
Audio buffer size: default
Synchronize audio and video: Disabled
Virtual stick animation: Disabled

I also got best results with "Glide64 10th anniversary Fast" as an emulation profile from each game's settings. Rare exceptions are some games like Yoshi Story or Monaco GP that run better with the Rice plugin (Rice accurate for Yoshi).

Finally, i also used the GLtools app from xda, to improve performance. Worked for mupen 64 as it has for other apps.

Alright, that's fair enough; I just think opening with "wrong" kind of undermined that a bit.

lol I'm sorry but I read this with Sonic wagging his finger.
No kidding. With all due respect to Neorice and his fine handiwork, I've been thinking for a while that this avatar doesn't really work when I'm in my less happy moods. Haven't quite decided on a replacement, though.

Well its one of the better/more unique Sonic avatars here, so I wouldn't be in that much of a rush to switch it up. Probably doesn't help that I've had Sonic Adventure 1 on the brain for some reason this month...

I prob should get that, I imagine it plays better on the N64 controller than anything else atm

I played it with a Gamecube controller to N64 adapter and it was great once I had the controls all mapped to what I wanted. It's nice on the N64 controller but the joystick if bad on your controller can really dampen the experience.

I do have a Hori 2 handle controller, I think the stick on that is better

I don't have the 10th Anniversary Fast choice on mine.

This is what I have:

Also, I was trying Blast Corps earlier. Game runs great, but you can't see your dude when you get out of a vehicle. I also noticed that a few textures were missing (like the N64 boot logo). Banjo Kazooie also gives me some weird boot textures.

N64 emulation is so frustrating. I want to own ALL of these games, but the cost of entry is just insane anymore.

Are N64 repros a thing?

Krikzz got ya back

this - it'd be awesome to dive into the import N64 stuff i largely missed out on. and for a while there, it was Tactics Ogre, Conker and few other domestic releases that were kinda outta reach, but i hear stuff like Smash Bros and others are (like everything else) on the rise, so it's only a matter of time before this becomes a more desirable option.

I plan to eventually turn one of my rooms into a Retro collection room/etc. Has one of my older CRTs and armchair couch.

For now, finally set up my TV on a table and dug out my N64 from boxes (boxed up everything from my collection months ago when having entire house carpet replaced/upgraded). Started playing Doom 64 again. God, I loved this game as a kid. I think this might have been my 1st M rated game actually. Currently in the middle of the game.

Good, picked that up and Shiren the Wanderer, any other good Japan only N64 titles I should be on the lookout for?

I would list stuff, but just go check out my thoughts in my N64 game opinion summaries thread here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=473262 Japanese import games are in the two updates linked in the Additions links in the first post; they're all on page 5, in 50-posts-per-page mode.

Basically though I'd say yeah, Shiren is interesting if you can figure out how to save; Bangaioh and Sin & Punishment are obvious; and some other interesting ones include Bomberman 64 (J) [note this is entirely different from the US Bomberman 64 game, which in Japan is called Baku Bomberman], Evangelion 64, Susume! Taisen Puzzle Dama, the two Custom Robo games, and others. Those games I just listed are either pretty good or are well worth a try.
