The NX Prediction / BSpeculation / Fanxiety Thread

Or we could blame the 'insiders' for pedalling rubbish and Nintendo for NX radio silence for nearly two years while the Wii U support has dried up and the 3DS is on the way out.

Man... That really brings to light just how sick and twisted we can be as Nintendo fans. Nintendo tried and failed with the Wii-U, and have now abandoned it. Instead of moving on, we're waiting for the next chance to throw our money at them.

It's like Nintendo is an abusive spouse and we keep giving them second chances because every now and then they do something great. They walked out on us (with Wii-U) and haven't come back for months, but we're just waiting by the door because we want them to come home again.

Plz Nintendo.

Beginning to feel that this thread should be locked.

As I said in the beginning of the thread, we really need to disallow NX discussion until Nintendo officially has something to say.

That's not what I'm saying at all.

When I say be mad at Nintendo, I'm not saying take to public forums and start slinging derogatory comments every which way you can. I'm saying hold them accountable for what are clearly some poor decisions. They are a company with a lot of prestige, but they can't live on that alone. People are asking for NX info because Nintendo has assured us they've not forgotten about us, but they haven't done anything to reassure us of that.

People on internet ask for business and corporative information.

Nintendo should listen to what internet people are saying and just give it to them.

Nice mod backseating.
If you don't want to contribute with the thread, don't post.

I've decided to break all my Nintendo consoles, send them to Nintendo with a copy of the receipt from the PS4 I just bought, so they will understand how angry am I.

The fact that everyone knows about NX but Nintendo is still twiddling their thumbs and kicking dirt is the most troubling aspect of this.

At this point i really wish they'd just go third party and make multiplat games, so their fans can quit wasting their money on their mediocre hardware endeavors.

I really want to be a Nintendo fan again, but they are way more focused on carving out their own market than they are about making the best games they could. Zelda BotW could have happened a generation ago if the Wii wasn't a garbage console.

For someone like me who studied and now works in Public Relations, she really makes my blood boil.

What I cannot stand about this woman is her habitual need to steal somebody else's thunder (when another person/media organization has just leaked something massive about the NX), and have the spotlight shine on her by pretending she's in cahoots with the rest of the industry insiders.

But then she takes it a step further...she pretends she's even more powerful and connected within the industry than the original source of the leak, by piggybacking on that same exact leak a day or two later, and adding her own tidbit..which is always super vague (Nintendo is developing a new "fun and crazy" IP) or simply common sense (NX supporting USB connectivity).

I just feel it's super disrespectful to REAL industry insiders who are taking the time to investigate the NX and write articles...only for freaking Emily Rogers to rock up 24-48 hours later and pretend she knows not as much but instead even more than the original source.

We just saw it happen again a few hours ago in her tweet with her having the nerve to claim she's the original source of Nvidia's involvement in the NX, when once again it's her taking credit for a leak from another source a day or two before she discussed it.

But, the whole reason we are following her in the first place was because she did do a ton of investigations into Nintendo and has been known to have a number of contacts. At some point her research on Nintendo and why Wii U failed prompted people to say she understands Nintendo better than Nintendo.

Hm, weird. I have to cope with Nintendo's lack of info too, but I seem to be able to handle it without piling on journalists and other fits of rage.

Maybe the true culprit is..........

YOU, dear reader

All Nintendo said we will hear more about NX on the fall. It's everyone's fault for being impatient. Nintendo are not required to tell people everything. They only briefly announced NX in the first place to state they are still making new console while they had their smartphone announcement.

Even though I'm not into any hype business (anymore, I'm 30+ now), I think this is a bit disingenuous as well. Nintendo said they'd let something know this year, and it would be really silly of them to do it during the Christmas holidays, so obviously you'd expect some kind of announcement by now. Especially if it's their one device for the coming time.

Still don't understand the specifics of the 12pm EST stuff, but how long till then (for us non-Amerifolk)?

This is just us waiting from 9:00 CET to 18:00 CET, any o'clock between that is a possible tweet announcement from NoE (NoA). 16:00, 17:00 and 18:00 are the most probable times.

Nobody understands Nintendo, son.

One can only imagine what Nintendo is about.

Just like clockwork, man.

Steve had it right:

The main issue I have with Emily's tweet right now has nothing to do with my faith or lack thereof in the reliability of her info. However, I now worry that it's just going to make this thread even more insufferable in terms of countdowns as people are sure that legitimate news is imminent. I kind of feel like we were just getting back to more laid back expectations of "news next week; may just be announcement of announcement."

But nope. Now we're going full on back into the REVEAL THIS WEEK!!!!!! HYPE!!!!!!!!!! cycle.

Hype train went off the rails yet another time, and the crash is all more painful for some who put too much coal to burn. At this rate I'm holding out hope on next week and that's it; and I'm even okay with a January blowout at this point.

The major gripe I have with Emily Rogers regarding her reporting of the NX, is that she ALWAYS appears to wait until somebody else with some credibility has something to reveal about the NX...and she then immediately after starts tweeting about how her own supposed "sources" told her the same thing, trying to give the impression that she's so amazing & important, and already knew beforehand what had just been revealed to the public.

As an example, she MASSIVELY latched onto the Eurogamer report, and interjected herself into the explicitly detailed leak about the NX, by doing what she always does...waiting for someone else to reveal something first, and then her adding a crappy tidbit or two of supposed "insider info" that's way too vague and non-specific to even mean much.

I just feel she's a bit of an opportunist, and I don't like how she continually hijacks leaks/reveals from other media sources, and tries to take credit for it.

Huh? It's like the exact opposite. She's usually the one breaking the news, then EVERYONE else hops on it

I find the insider bashing to be far more annoying than the countdowns.

Also people are very quickly forgetting that a regular work week has five days. Monday through Friday. It ain't over till it's over.

People getting ticked at Nintendo for not doing anything?

lol

Is this like when a guy likes a girl, and gets irrationally upset when she hasn't texted in a while?

Nintendo just be polite and text and don't go ghost omg

To try to drag this discussion in a slightly more productive direction, here's a prediction:

The NX SoC will be fabricated on TSMC's new 16FFC process
(the same as the Apple A10 and just announced Kirin 960)

My reasons for believing this are as follows:

  • The new 16FFC process is actually cheaper than the older 16FF/16FF+ processes. This is due to a decreased number of mask layers and improved density (meaning more dies per wafer).
  • 16FFC improves power efficiency over the older processes, making it particularly useful for a handheld SoC.
  • It's already being used in shipping products, meaning there shouldn't be any of the yield issues that come with being the first run on a new process.
  • It may help explain any internal delay from late 2016 to March 2017, as the process would have been ready for a late 2016 launch, but with Apple sourcing the A10 entirely from TSMC (as opposed to the A9 which was dual-sourced with Samsung), Nintendo would have had to enter a bidding war with Apple to ensure sufficient supply for launch, potentially increasing costs substantially. A March 2017 launch allows them to wait until TSMC have sufficient 16FFC capacity, allowing them to pay a much more reasonable price per wafer.
  • It may help explain why we haven't heard anything from third parties with final hardware. On a 28nm/20nm/16FF+ process Nintendo should have been able to get a decent number of engineering samples off the production line by this point to start using them in their party dev kits. A new process such as 16FFC would make it more difficult (and expensive) to get a sufficient number of high-quality engineering samples this early to be using them in dev kits.
It doesn't really give us any new info over what we already assumed regarding Pascal (in theory it should allow them to squeeze a bit more onto the die and operate at slightly higher clocks, but my expectations in both regards had such a high margin of error that I can't really say they've changed much), but I find it kind of interesting from my own tech-nerd point of view.

Being serious for a moment, I think NX is in trouble. This doesn't feel like some new compressed marketing strategy, it has the hallmarks of a company struggling behind the scenes with a product that they feel is potentially a real clunker but is too late in development change course.
