I don't think the limits or leveling up are necessarily random, just mixed on when they're available. BTW, I actually love that even some of the camera shots are homages to the original game. And a little advice, go out on the town before your second mission.:p

While I'm gushing with positives, the game does have a few problems. The biggest of which is the damn DMW. It's fucking stupid. It's a roulette that appears on the left corner of the screen during battle and it dictates whether you level up Zack, your materia, or get a limit break. And it's utterly random. Maybe I'm missing something so far.

The DMW isn't nearly as random as it appears to be. Levels aren't very random at all. The game keeps a hidden experience score, and there's a chance to level up once it's over a certain point. The other stuff is easy to manipulate with accessories/materia, as well.

Also, one thing I noticed is that accessories sometimes have more stats than just what they say. Like the Fire Armlet also increases Magic and MP.

well i got it. haven't started yet, but... it's here. I hope this is worth it :/

Don't worry. It's not Dirge :lol

But to be honest, it was only after beating this game that I have renewed hope in Square-enix as an RPG developer.

If they can expand and add more nuances and concepts to the CC battle system for FFv13, I'll be a happy camper :)

He said all you had to do was press X and watch the pretty battles.

I mean, when you break the gameplay down to its basics, isn't that exactly what the final fantasy games have been? Along with every other turn based JRPG available?

This is not a complaint. I prefer turnbased combat but it really is just basically a game of choices instead of actions.

Menu->selection->press X = hit 458 damage!

menu->skill->selection->press X = FIREBALL! You win!

So, I was saying that if you looked at all the turn-based goodness it really is just "Make a selection, hammer the X button, watch the goodness".

Take out the menu and skill selection and you've got the Crisis Core battle system, in a nutshell. True, you can do more than attack continuously, but it's hardly ever necessary unless you just want to get the battle over a bit quickly. Still a good game, but I'm not seeing it as the 9 most publications are giving it, unless you weigh heavily on the nostalgia factor.
I found the whole visit to Nibelheim just spectacular

Leveling is not completely random
The guy said in the interview that, the game keeps tracks of how many monsters you kill, which affects your leveling also.

I'm only near the beginning. Plan to play it really slow, don't want it to end. Nostalgia galore! Definitely the 2nd best looking PSP game. <3 Yuffie

i hope not. If this is as bad as Advent or Dirge, I'm going to officially make it my life's duty to battle Nomura to the death.

The outcome is going to be interesting. *Grabs a popcorn* Play the game already :) Though by the sound of others, it won't be bad like DOC.

God, after contemplating buying a PS3 and subsequently listening to the X-Play review (sure their credibility isn't the best, but it's still a valid opinion), my purchase of a PSP is now back in limbo.

Are the dialogue and plotline really that bad?

Amir0x said:
no i'm not gonna start this until I finish Ring of Fates. Don't want my backlog to start building

Shit, I was waiting for your opinion. I find that if a cynic enjoys the game, then I will certainly enjoy the game. :D

It's based on FFVII, what do you think! I'm honestly just wanting the gameplay to hold up at this point, I'll be pleased with that.

Edit: I will play for an hour or two tonight and post impressions for you dirt.

I got the silver one at BB. Didn't know its sorta a special edition. Looking at the other one, kinda wish I had it instead. There's nothing extra that comes in the BB one though?

The plot is typical FFVII BS with a much more contained focus (Zack and his development holds onto the limelight above all other things). I'm not extremely far into the game but so far, the dialogue isn't really that bad. Angeal is prone to saying some pretty dumb stuff, but everything Zack has said thus far is pretty good and pretty well acted.

Of course, it seems like the main issue of your doubt right now stems from the X-Play review. I'd advise to read some of the other reviews (Like Parish's 1Up/EGM review) since X-Play's word is pretty much at the complete opposite end of the spectrum at this point, regardless of validity.

You said you're a huge FFVII fan. A site known for shitty reviews for most Jrpg is going to stop you? Besides since you own a ps3, a psp will come in handy. But it's your choice of course.

:(

Just a little peak? Oh well, I shall await for your impressions when the time comes :D

EDIT

Thanks, love!

The dialogue and plot....well, this is certainly a Final Fantasy game, girly men, sappy stories, melodrama and all. I guess it'd be good if those kind of stories were your cup of tea, but I was not at all fond of the storyline. As far as I'm concerned, Crisis Core is one big FF VII nostalgia trip and not much more. Worth a buy if you were a fan of VII, but outside of that, take it or leave it.

Man, that Best Buy cover is awful.

I picked up my pre-ordered copy from my store, and then went to Best Buy, debating maybe buying their version, and then returning mine back, but as soon as I saw that cover I immediately decided not to.

I LOVE special editions of games, because often they have neat little extras that give some insight into the game, but this "variant cover" is just bullshit, especially when even Europe is getting something nice.

This game is rocking my socks off so far. I had zero interest in it due to the other spin offs being crap but wow is it done well.

I'm about 45 minutes into the game and it's amazing so far...
I still can't believe I can get this level of quality on a portable console.
The PSP purchase is really starting to pay off with titles like MGSPO, GOW & FF Crisis Core.

Love it, love it, love it!

Played for a couple of hours so far and damn this thing is impressive, I dig the humor so far and the voice acting is great. Amazing graphics, best character models on PSP, better than GoW: CoO in my eyes. I'm very glad that they have 'best equipment' for offense, magic, and defense and it auto selects it based on your inventory. Makes it very simple, collect loot, hit best, what type, done. This is going to keep me busy through the end of the semester :D

Is damage positional? I've flanked a few enemies and start hacking at them from the rear, each hit's a critical and I do 2-3x more damage.

Yeah you do a critical hit every time you attack from behind.

I am really hooked on the missions. I want to move on with the story but every time it says 'new mission' I just have to do it.

Picked up my shiny metallic one during lunch by walking into a BB after having purchased online.

Checked out BB's website last night, but the in-store pickup wasn't yet an option. Signed back on first thing in the AM, all 5 stores accessible to me in or around Manhattan already showed up as "unavailable" for in-store pickup. Was crushed.

Idly refreshed that page while in the office at work, and at one point, ONE of those 5 stores became available. Completed the transaction, and 2 hours later, I had my shiny, silvery copy.

My Amazon preorder of the standard version (with Shinra UMD case) should ship soon.

So, does someone want a brand new, still sealed copy of Crisis Core? :lol

I take it you're not giving it out for free. But I don't have the game, I'm playing a friend's copy so if it is free (poor college student here who has to eat) I'll take it :lol

Phew. Just finished the first Sample Monster mission which pitted me against
Ifrit
again.

Looks like starting the game off on hard mode was indeed the correct choice. It was actually pretty funny when the DMW started going crazy towards the end of the match and pretty much gave me some lucky buffs that enabled me to survive the boss's uber attack at two separate points. So far, I'm really not seeing how this game is a button masher. Hell, I tried button mashing my way through Wutai only to get stomped to the curb by soldiers n' monsters.

Of course, "I'm playing on Hard Mode" answers my situation. And as another member here already said, start off on hard mode. You won't regret it.

No, I meant to sell, of course! :lol

Game clocks in at an impressive 1.68 GBs, it seems. That's more than all 3 discs of FFVII compressed and combined!

Thanks Amir0x. I appreciate that.

But back to the story. Am I the only one who enjoyed the story of FFVII (granted, I only played through 80% of the original game and it got lost in my collection thereafter; it's still my favorite JRPG of all time)?

I've gone back to the game and have been playing it for the past week now and even still the story holds up to my memories. It's well translated (minus a meager one or two punctuation errors I've encountered) and contains the same enthralling and captivating characters, world, and narrative that fostered my now-prodigiously positive perception of the game today.

It's almost as though I'm playing a different game.

anyone have a scan of the BB cover? I'm curious as to what it looks like compared to the standard one.

I don't feel like scanning it at the moment, but it looks just like this without the pre-order and Best Buy junk on the front.

Why are you giving yourself fits worrying about whether you will potentially like CC? If you love the story and world of FFVII that much, I dont see how you wont like Crisis Core.

I agree with Himuro, there are plenty of lol moments.

That's the thing; are the comments that find fault with the game's plotline coming from individuals who enjoyed the original title's story or from those who have thought it to be mediocre from its inception?

If only there was a little disclaimer beside every user's screen-name that detailed their opinion on whether they enjoyed the story of FFVII, matters would be much simpler :D

I really like the Battle system.
I'm barely an hour in, and have no experience with the FF series except X, but still, I think the battle system is pretty damn engaging.

Is this the first FF game to utilize something similar to this?
