Just finished it at 15:55. Overall, had fun with this one. The CG overall was great and the ending was very well done. It blends with FFVII quite well... I can totally see the PS3 FFVII remake a reality.
Noticed I had 5 quid's worth of points available at GAME and ended up preordering this for £19.99. Normally I wouldn't have bothered, but the artbook is apparently hardback, and being Final Fantasy it'll probably be worth a bob or two in a decade or so.
So I've been doing some missions instead of the story, and I got
some materia from completing a tree of mako recovery missions
, but when I went back to do the
SOLDIER v. security guys missions, I got assraped by that last machine you fight with the big force field and the 100-somethingsomething cannon
I'm about 4.5 hours in, but I still have no idea how that roulette thing works. Sometimes it says my materia levels up, other times Zack levels up. Sometimes I get still pictures and a special attack, other times I get a video of something I didn't see in the story yet and then my HP is like 1.8x the max. What the hell?
3 of same pictures - limit breaks/summons
777 - level up
2 matchin numbers levels up the materia that's equiped on that slot number ( i.e. Equiping Fire on slot 3, and getting double 3, levels up Fire)
Picked this up yesterday. I was kind of hesitant about it considering what I've seen of Dirge of Cerberus, but positive feedback from someone I trust convinced me.
I'm about a half hour in--just finished the introduction and first tutorial mission, read all the emails and checked out the menus--and I'm loving it so far. The presentation is far better than I expected, with the nostalgic setting infused with a slick Advent Children-esque aesthetic. Great music. GREAT voice acting (which came as a surprise). And of course the CG cinematics are always a treat. The battle system clicked right away. I was dubious about it after watching some gameplay footage on YouTube a few days ago. Turns out it's really engaging and intuitive when I'm the one doing the controlling. The DMW system is...different. I haven't seen much of it so far since I've only been in something like three battles,
but I got three Angeal panels during the Behemoth (?) fight and saw a kickass limit break
.
Watching Zack's well-proportioned model run about in the FFVII world reminds me of controlling Cloud's superdeformed one in the original game, and reinforces my desire for a modern remake of the latter. I'm sure it would send certain purists into a frothing rage, but just imagine the glorious nerd euphoria of having the classic we all remember revived with the polish made possible by current technology.
I think I'll get back to the game now.
I haven't even leveled up yet, and I'm hungry to acquire more materia after the ones I used in the intro got "confiscated" (curse those thrifty Shinra bastards). It looks like I get to start off with Cure at least,

Played this for about 3 hours last night...really impressed so far.
I don't know what it is, but I still don't quite undertand the whole SP system...I mean, you gain SP for fighting, and then it costs SP every time you do your little slot machine thing. What am I missing? Is SP kida like Experience Points with just another layer added?

Me neither. Also, I've played like 3 hours into the game and the only shop I can access is the ShinRa shop... Can't I upgrade my weapons so I get more materia slots? I've got lots of materia but I can't equip it cause I just have like 4 slots :/
I have not a clue what could be considered spoiler material (certainly not the part you quoted?) but I went with my best guess and tagged certain spots. Let me know how it looks.
I've been playing this sucker for the past two days, otherwise I'd have posted sooner. I'm really hooked on the combat since it's pretty interesting being active but requiring you to really gauge the phasing-action. Recently I am just being stupid and trying to amass a hoard of Materias to experiment and fuse with. It's becoming fun to see what i get, despite my results bottoming out. I need some more rare ones to start with as a foundation. Anyone have some good suggestions?
But story-wise I just got done with
the initial Aerith bit. I'm sorry but the writing is horrid. The game is gorgeous but the exposition is like the lowest common denominator anime-fan shit. No offense to anyone who's enjoying it, but almost every over-done story chunk really pulls me away from the gameplay, which has been surprising to me. What I mean is that I expected to be satisfied in the opposite direction, as in presentation and exposition first then gameplay second.
As an aside, I find myself torn on Zack. Sometimes I think he's a really cool character with identifiable personality, other times he's written as a twat. I'm hoping he develops more past his cookie-cutter brattitude as the game progresses, but thus far in my quest his personality is that of a high school retard from some disney channel sitcom. I do however love his little one-liners when you're in battle and the DMW cues up a support character. his "I'm trying!!!" when he calls Tseng up had me smiling. Likewise for his appeals to Angeal. And Cissnei's support is the shit. Zack's in-place jog and the starries swirling had me cracking up. Not to mention that the exchanges with her in Sector 8 seemed like the least-forced dialogue in the game.
Regardless, I'm hooked on side missions in between the main story arcs and I find the split engaging enough to keep playing. I will likely finish this sucker. What's the hour count for some of you that have finished it? I'm just looking for a rough estimate.
1) Visually fantastic, the first 'summon' battle early in the game is incredible
2) Sound effects / music are amazing, I love the battle music in particular, very catchy
3) Dialogue is embarrassing; I can't believe in 2008 a company
as rich as Square can't get better English voice-acting quality
4) Combat system is more enjoyable than I thought it would be
5) The approach to and accessibility of the side missions is very well designed, it shows a thoughtful approach to making a portable game. It's a very easy-to-digest way of delving into the depth of an RPG, but still having the ability to churn through the main story

No not the part I quoted but I didn't want quote and have it twice..lol
You tagged the exact sentences I was talking about. Basically anything story related or pieces of that game that someone would want to look forward to and not know beforehand or that isn't common knowledge.

You'll get more materia slots very soon as you progress in the story. As for shops though, I'm pretty far and I still only have two shops, and the market doesn't even show up on my shop list...

Whoa now, that's a bit extreme. This does look good, but it's also displaying a LOT less than God of War. The environments in CC are much smaller and less detailed. God of War features quite possibly the most complex scenery in any PSP game to date and manages to keep the action just as intense as the PS2 games. Crisis Core simply isn't doing as much.

SP is also used for crafting materia. So far I don't see how I could ever run out of SP i have so much of the stuff.
Also so far normal is soooooo damn easy. I'm only on chapter 4 but I have like 3400 HP, and just plow through stuff by wearing 3 power wrists. I regret not picking hard.

Just picked this up at Gamestop at lunch since I had a $25 gift card. They offered me a UMD case if I reserved any game, but since there is nothing coming out (and I hate going into Gamestop when I can avoid it) I said 'no.'
Just a heads up in case someone really wants the case but didn't reserve.

I still think it looks/feels better. The super steady framerate and responsive controls really set this one ahead of GoW for me. I find the textures look nicer too. The HUD looks great as well.
edit: let's just say that while I think GoW looked amazing, it felt unpolished. This game, on the other hand, feels like the most polished PSP game I've played since Disgaea.
The voice acting itself is excellent, but towards the end it's obvious that some of the animations are recycled. It's the writing that is truly horrid. Pure Final Fantasy through and through, and that's the sad part.
On my second playthrough I joined the Zack fanclub. Right after the Nibelheim I got a message from his fanclub about his death and the following info: "Our thanks go to all 51,836 members out there. May Zack always live within our hearts." I think that's why I love these mail messages. They give some insight on the story, but besides that, they liven up the atmosphere.

I'm not sure it's the writing as much as the translation. The small, self-contained scenes work nicely, but some of the scenes that are supposed to function as pure exposition struggle to maintain coherency...mostly anything with Genesis.

Good point. A lot of the stuff said by Genesis, especially the LOVELESS quotes, seem like they'd be hard to translate, and I feel the translators did a decent job in that regard. It's more the over prelevance of the quotes and how much the add to what's already a fairly melodramatic game that bugs me, though I guess it could be considerably different in the original Japanese.
I don't think you will regret it, even for just those 3 games, let alone all the cheap gems, downloadable content, remote play and unknown cool stuff coming out.

There's some other stuff like LocoRoco, Lumines (I love the cellphone version), and other games I see in ads and places, also including what's to come as you mentioned, but yeah, those three are the ones interesting me the most at the moment, I simply can't resist any longer.

You wont regret it,the PSP is awesome, the damn thing even has Skype now
The funny thing is that I bought a PS2 years ago mainly to play Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts. I guess in the end it all comes down to the fact that I'm a SE fanboy at heart.
