Definitely made for the fans and with no real interest in attracting new players to the genre, no real depth in combat with a story which is extremely generic.
I disagree. There's quite a bit of depth to the combat system, especially when you start working on the harder sub-missions. The main story is pretty easy, but the harder missions will kill you, and you'll have to adapt. One thing that's nice is that magic is different than other games, lighting is a short range burst, fire is a homing missile, and ice is a stationary attack that materializes over an enemy (but misses if they move). In this sense, the game becomes a lot more action like, and you're not just thinking about elementals when you attack. Timing is much more important.
I hadn't played FF7 for... over 7 years, and I still found the story relatively easy to follow. You only really need to know the basic premise of FF7 to enjoy the story, and even without that it's totally understandable. I'll admit that some familiarity with the characters and universe can make the game more interesting, as there is an element of nostalgia associated with the story, but it's all explained pretty well.
I think that it takes a bit of time to get to the "good stuff" in this game, maybe 1 or 2 hours at the most. But I really enjoyed the game. So much content to unlock, it's unbelievable.
