The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

Some stores are starting to have it in Germany. Haven't seen anything online yet. If only I knew that I still didn't have a disk drive so many months later, what a terrible console.

Are you seriously still thinking they are planning to support the PSVR2 a bit
No, I am not. The PSVR2 has a lot of great games (from 3rd parties), I bought it without the expectation of Sony doing anything worthwhile for it. They did fund Village and RE4 though so I will always be grateful for that.

It would just be nice to have the option to buy replacement controllers, I can understand not having them in stores but an option from Sony Direct would be nice. I don't need new controllers, but I know others do and I think you have to send in the whole headset in order to have them repaired/replaced. That's pretty weak.

I expect the controllers will be available standalone once they roll out PSVR2 controller support for Vision Pro, not sure when that's meant to be.

I have no regret skipping PS5 pro, the price and hassle finding disc drive is not worth what they offering.
It was easy to anticipate that the drives would sell out after the announcement. On the day of the announcement I had no problem securing one on Best Buy. Why did people wait until after the fact?

The price I get is understandable but knowing the existence of the Pro rumored since 2022 and then Tom Henderson nailing down the release window nearly a year prior, there was plenty of time to get the money for it.

Edit: my point in the latter half is to say that saving is key to be ready for a situation like the cost of the drive. Most weren't ready to buy it when it came time to, now they're scrambling everywhere for one.

Good i ordered mine the same day preordered the Pro, not because this low stock status but most of my games are physical.

This could mean there were very low discs drives on the market or Pro is selling pretty well.

But we are past that point; that argument is not relevant now. It's been out for months and still no sign of the disc drives. There is no way this is a 'normal' supply problem. It's bullshit and seems purposeful. A billion dollar company can't get enough disc drives built!!

For me what Sony offering with PS5 pro is not worth spending $950 CAD + $100 more for disc drive especially the fact I'm also planning to buy Switch 2.

So I made my choice to keep my money for Switch 2 instead of buying PS5 pro, I can still play PS5 games on my launch PS5.

Yes, this statement covers the shortage close to and right after launch.

This many months post-launch? it’s deliberate.

Lots of $800 CAD deals on FB marketplace in Ontario. I picked up another Pro that way. Brand new

Exactly. Two types of people are complaining here. First the people who complain about anything Sony, they might not even have PS5s in the first place. The second type thought the PS5 Pro would be dead on arrival and thought they weren't going to buy one. I'd hazard to guess very few people bought at launch and haven't been able to get a drive either in advance or shortly there after.

It's literally been 106 days since the PS5 Pro launched. That's barely more than 3 months. Some of those months being the most difficult to get new product to market.

This is never going to be a product that they line shelves with. And since like mid January it's been easy to get them in the US, by the end of March it'll be easy to get them anywhere. People like to make a bigger deal out of things than they actually are.

people can’t play their physical library on their brand new Pro consoles and you’re snarking about people being unhappy about the situation.

it’s also not a new product. It launched over a year ago with the Slim.

News for you, US is not everywhere. Try the UK. And the disc drive has been out a year.

Do you think they're going to make a disc drive for every slim and pro? Yeah, that's not realistic. It's always going to be a limited quantity item.

The vast majority of people who want a disc drive version will buy the disc drive model.

They aren't going to significantly ramp up production just because of the Pro either. Supply and demand will balance itself out over time, but those who wanted it the most i.e. early adopters could have easily got a disc drive, especially in the US.

This topic dies down for weeks at time because when it is in stock no one cares. The second it sells out, someone bumps the thread. It's silly at this point.

Whether the disc drive is needed or not by every unit, Sony should be increasing production when they have doubled the SKUs that can take a disc driv. Your takes are puzzling.

Did the introduction of a new SKU increase demand for PS5s overall? By how much? By how much should they increase production?

mitch1971

And how much is that?
I've already answered it. Enough, that we don't need to be tracking every bloody unit that arrives on our shore, or that we have to be paying scalpers double the price for it. Seriously, you know how many I'm talking about in general. Like any product they want to sell easily. You are just being facetious, now.

The fact that you're struggling to answer the question should give you pause that reality isn't that simple.

You have to gauge how many PS5 Pros you're selling in multiple regions and how many PS5 Pro's you anticipate selling for the next few months AND what percentage of those consumers want to buy a disc drive.

How difficult do you think it is to accurately forecast not only PS5 sales, but a Pro model, and not just a pro model, but accessories for that model... Almost impossible to produce an accurate data model around disc drives at this point. So yeah, a JIT inventory strategy is probably the fiscally responsible thing to do.

You also don't seem to understand the relationship that inventory has on cash flow, but the reality is Sony isn't going to ramp up production of disc drives only to assuage temporary demand and they're certainly not going to do it because of some disingenuous posters on a forum.

It does seem to be coming back in stock much more frequently in UK.

Although it's out of stock more then in stock, it's pretty easy to get as it stays in stock for hours.

I hope you work for Sony, lol. That’s some pretty solid defense work. If you are doing it for free, my condolences.

Sony needs to answer these questions. They could have also made the whole thing easier by having disk bundles like they did when Slim was released. And yet they haven’t.

We are 3 months post release and disk drive situation is a shit show. But yes, it’s the customer fault.

Great binary thinking, but it's not about defending Sony, it's about explaining reality.

If you're a core consumer who is so invested in video games that you post daily on a gaming forum like GAF and somehow you're struggling to get a disc drive, yeah... it's your fault. Ample opportunities pre and post launch.

As for why Sony didn't do a disc bundle, because the articles about $750 write themselves and managing multiple SKUs is always more difficult. You have the same problem of the bundled SKUs selling out and people would still be complaining...

Everyone I look in the US people have it. I just casually bought it on my PS5 Pro last week. Is it really that hard to get?

The US is likely the best market for the PS5 Pro and the easiest to distribute. A lot of people in other countries don't love that, but it's again the reality.

Of course we're going to get priority for stock, but it also GENERALLY is an indicator of stock for other regions, but it won't happen overnight, which is why if you're in a lower served region and this was vitally important enough to you enough to get your panties in a bunch over a couple months of low stock, you should have ordered this ahead of launch. That reality though makes people even angrier because yeah, they know they could have.

How long will you continue to argue this weird point where you sneer at people for not preordering an accessory that most sensible people assumed would be in stock, months after launch?

Because people expect shit to be in stock when they’re ready to buy. The Portal is in stock. PS5 consoles are in stock. Headphones are in stock. Fucking faceplates are in stock.

When they're ready to buy? That's not how supply and demand works.

The Portal used to sell out in its early days on the market. Headphones are pretty low demand. Faceplates are a plastic mold that requires little production. PS5s are their primary product...

You're literally talking about a niche version of a PS5 and an accessory that goes to that niche product, 3 months after launch and in minor regions...

Like I'm not sure what to tell you. They're not going to pack the shelves full of disc drives.

We ain't. We are referring to the one without a disc drive. So, irrelevant to this situation.

As long as they continue to complain?

For what purpose? To get a kick out of it and increase our dissatisfaction? Who does that!

My point was that Sony isn't going to drastically increase the disc drive because of two discless SKUs on the market. You have to look at what people are responding to and not just what they say. The existence of the the PS5 Digital is not a major factor in increasing the production.

As long as they continue to complain?

Increase your dissatisfaction? I don't work for Sony. Why would I care about whether you are satisfied or dissatisfied? You make your own choices, you're presumably a grown adult.

The Portal used to sell out in its early days on the market.

We are not in the 'early days' of the disc drive.

We're in the early days of the Pro, which is what is driving the demand for the disc drive (temporarily). Until Sony can get a good sense of the demand per region, you're not going to suddenly see overstock.

Like, I'm not sure what to tell you.

We hear you loud and clear. We get your take on it. At this point, you are just trolling.

It's ironic, because I think you're trolling. You guys disappear for weeks at a time when the drives are in stock and magically reappear when they're out of stock to complain.

It’s still being somewhat scalped on FB marketplace, $150 CAD prices is standard now, up from the $99 retail
Yeah, im not really interested in paying scalper prices. I can wait it out. Thankfully a friend will share his digital library with me so I have no shortage of games.

My point was that Sony...

Please, don't come back saying you are just making an innocent business 101 point, when you initially came in to this back and forth with a presumption of how easy it is to buy in a country I don't even live; or that it's my fault for not having a crystal ball of future stock levels; or, that Sony's short fall of stock is somehow my fault; or we are just some disingenuous forum poster; or that it's a waste of time to complain about a company. Very early on in this thread I gave Sony the benefit of the doubt with its delays. I'm not one of those guys who disappear for a time and comes back complaining when they ain't in stock again, because I've never seen them in stock to begin with in my country since buying the machine.

My only conclusion is that Sony are clearly in no rush to get these drives out. Sony, have the numbers and the 40 years experience to know when to supply to a demand, but from the outside looking in they have no urgency to do so. But, I don't really need some enlightened forum poster gaslighting me at every turn on Sony's behalf.

The Portal was a new product category. The success or failure could not be determined prior to launch.
This is a bloody disc drive attachment required to play physical games. Of course it was going to be in reasonably high demand.

It’s also not an accessory for a niche product. It’s also for the PS5 slim.

Shelves aren’t ‘packed full’ of other available accessories like the Portal and headphones or Dualsense Edge. That’s not how this works at all.

Sony makes the same disc drive for regular PS5 Slim consoles that they have in stock. The exact same drive. Ramping up to ensure decent availability should not have been a challenge.

Saw poor ops thread on november just on ps5 pro launch day lol. Of course its limited stock as they stocked it as option for slim consoles mostly then. I remember buying that shit the moment i can preorder confirmed
