man sad to say it but Fantastic Four will outgross Batman Begins at the BO :( I lost my faith in humanity.

on the other hand, Batman Begins now has a legitimate shot at making 200 million at the Domestic BO :)

Looks like my prediction is in line with Fantastic Four being a big success. Also, my faith in humanity takes yet another hit.

Um how does a SINGLE DAY'S estimated gross = FF4>BB at the box office? Honestly, I understand extrapolations and all that, but I think your assumption is completely unfounded.

Fantastic Four will drop off significantly, because, by all accounts, it's shit.

I can't believe anyone would go and see that film after that trailer.

:D Internet Snobs, suck it down. Your precious Batman's opening weekend B.O. KILLED by the movie you never gave a chance. I love it.

It looks like the bad press and dissapointed reviews caught up to WOTW....That's a pretty bad drop.

On Point One, the final box office for Fantastic Four will be less than $10 Million above Batman's opening weekend, and BB has Wednesday/Thursday to take away from it. So, this opening is really not any stronger than Batman Begins', when you take into account more than basic law of numbers.

On point two, there is generally little in the way of terrible press for War of the Worlds. While some reviews are fairly lukewarm about the film, there is nowhere near the amount of hate that is facing Fantastic Four. While there is nowhere near the amount of good word of mouth that Batman carried into its second weekend, a drop of 50% from a holiday-boosted weekend is pretty darn good in the end.

Oh, and there is no chance of Fantastic Four outgrossing Batman Begins with Batman still making $10 Million or so this weekend. Fantastic Four might well be the major blockbuster for the next couple of weeks but it's younger kids and teens audience will be more or less dominated by Bad News Bears and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. So, while there is no big explostion flicks opening for a couple of weeks, there is plenty of competition to limit its box office abilities. Plus, all signs point towards suck. Just sayin'.

So what does everyone predict F4s drop will be next weekend? 60+%?

Charlie & Wedding Crashers should dominate.. should. :/

High. Spilt between Charlie and Wedding Crashers for next weekend's BO.

Batman Begins - $10.22 Million (Estimated Third Place, 35% Drop)

Still no War of the Worlds numbers, but Batman is now at $172 Million and will definitely end up the 2nd Highest grossing Batman film. An impressive feat.

Batman Begins made an estimated $11.1M this weekend, bringing it to $172M domestic. $200M is gonna be a close call.

Could Fantastic 4's box office mirror that of X-Men (2000)? X-Men opened on July 14th, had an opening weekend of $54M, faced stiff competition from The Patriot, The Perfect Storm, Scary Movie, What Lies Beneath, and Nutty Professor 2, and went on to make $157M domestically.

Of course, X-Men was getting better press and reviews than F4...

damn War of the Worlds had a huge drop. Batman Begins level 2nd weekend (and thats after a HUGE first week). Not very good. I guess its not going to pass BB by much after all. Star Wars should stay ahead of everything by a LOT. This could be another one of those summers where one movie does huge numbers (Episode III's $350 million+) and nothing else even gets to $200million.

I do not believe Fantastic Four will outgross Batman Begins. Batman could still be heading for just north of $200 million and I simply don't see F4 having that good of a multiplier.

The full weekend box office numbers are out:

1. Fantastic Four $56,000,000 $56,000,000
2. War of the Worlds $31,300,000 $165,809,000
3. Batman Begins $10,216,000 $172,105,000
4. Dark Water $10,127,000 $10,127,000
5. Mr and Mrs Smith $7,850,000 $158,647,000
6. Herbie: Fully Loaded $6,274,000 $48,506,000
7. Bewitched $5,500,000 $50,851,000
8. Madagascar $4,300,000 $179,550,000
9. Rebound $2,875,000 $11,360,000
10. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith $2,600,000 $370,819,000

WotW did better on Saturday/Sunday than on Friday, and Batman Begins beat out newcomer Dark Water for the #3 slot.

$8 million difference. Not quite a killing. Looking at how the weekend went for FF, I'm not sure it will be passing Batman any time soon. Internet Snobs +1!

I saw Fantastic 4 and it was very disappointing...Batman Begins was so much better, I doubt F4 will have much legs as word of mouth of how bad it is will kill it quickly.

Well, Fantastic Four is really the first comic-based film this summer (maybe this year?) that seems more "family freindly" in that it isn't a very dark film. Batman was really too dark to pull in the family crowd - but the excellence of the film has earned it it's much deserved legs to compensate for the smaller opening.

One might argue something like Herbie or Shark Boy and Lava Girl would count, but those aren't so much family as kiddie.

With Fantastic Four getting the somewhat family crowd this weekend I'd expect Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to steal some of its audience next weekend. FF will suffer a big drop next week (though probably not as bad as X2).

Fantastic Four wasn't disappointing to me. It was a really fun comic book movie. Perfectly matched the original FF comics I think.

But I'm surprised by the weekend numbers. I was expecting it to do a little better than Begins just because it's more family friendly.

I think the final weekend numbers will be a little closer to 60 mil though.

The bigger news is that the box office is actually up for the first time this year, year over year. It took two weeks of back-to-back blockbusters to do it, though...chances are, with a smaller drop for War of the Worlds, that next weekend could continue the trend with Charlie and Wedding Crashers.

at my theatre last night, we had to add 2 more screens and showings for fantastic four. plus it been sold out for much of the day. the last time we did this was for Mr & Mrs. Smith....

Awesome, looks like Batman's going to reach my predictions. I rock at this Box office thing.

6/19

Well, looking at Madagascar and considering it doesn't get crushed by WOTW (curse you TOM CRUIIIISE!) it may hit around $180-200 mark. Maybe... fuck cruise.

6/27

I was suprised kinda too, but Sunday's beat out Friday's take. Also, 5.6 million from Imax. Pretty crazy. I went to an Imax screening Sunday night, like 3 open seats in the place. The earlier 6:30 show was sold out, so spent a day at Navy Pier and seen the movie again, with the 9:30 show. Everyone loved it also, which is rare. Oh, and beating overall estimates again! Awesome. Can't wait to see what happens next weekend though. It could crawl to 180 million or be a sure thing to land somwhere between 180-200 million, my original estimates the first weekend. Anyway, next weekend I can see 18-22, or similar 25 million 4-day take, given a good 4th of july weekend. Should be over $150 million though by Tuesday of next week and then slow a bit but making safely 190, possibly 200+. Again, with a good 4th of july weekend.

Same here, the wife an dI both just got back from it. We both really enjoyed it, a good, fun summer romp. Nowhere near as bad as some people would like it to be.

I'll get the DVD for sure.

Wow people are finding this film enjoyable, well what did you know? gotta prepare for Fantastic Four 2 and 3.

I know I said I liked it, but I'm hoping FF2 pulls a Spider-Man 2 and just kicks the original in the ass.

Hell yeah, Batman has them legs! As much as I enjoyed War of the Worlds, I would love to see it in the #4 slot next week with Batman Begins still holding on to #3. Might be too much to ask...but you never know.

There aren't many people talking about Fantastic Four around here...Must be it's not going to be very big. Well Batman Begins or War of the Worlds caliber big. I'm not talking in quality, in profits.

Fox simply wanted Fantastic Four to finish #1 at the box office... guess they got their wish, that means another CRAPPY Four sequel.

Ughhh...

Supposedly a trilogy is already planned, but I haven't heard it from any official sources yet.

Your hate for FF makes me want to see it. Goddam internet snobs

Im gonna suggest it to my mates next week, going to help it pull some big numbers. TBH the trailer looked alright

I saw FF, I enjoyed it. I would not call it a good movie. I'l probably get the DVD and turn it on occasionally for a popcird flick/background noise.

I think it'll drop fast, though. I think th estrong opening is mainly becuase of the heavy promotions and marketing.

batman suffered only a 37% decline on top of DIRECT competition. Holy shit! And if Batman beats studio estimates again and comes in 35% or less.

heh.. now they are saying it is LIKELY to beat $200M. Not bad for a movie that debuted to a $50M opening weekend.

Uh, Batman Begins' opening weekend was nearly double that. 70 million+ if you count wednesday and thursday. :P

shocking :lol

Arad Says Fantastic 4 Sequel a Go
Source: mary July 11, 2005

The Los Angeles Times talked to Marvel Studios' Avi Arad, who says that the $56 million opening of Fantastic Four guarantees a sequel:

Avi Arad, chairman of Marvel Studios, sees the weekend as just the beginning of a long-term revenue stream for the company. "Of course, there will be a sequel," he said. "Now the constituency is much larger."

FF + Burger King actually combined for a pretty funny commercial I just saw. The one with the geek of the bunch feeding fries to a Jessica Alba standee in the breakroom... :lol
