TLOU Remastered: 30 fps option gives better shadow quality [Up: Comparison GIF in OP]

There's barely any difference in these shots. It's crazy that people who have access to the game only want to pick the unfavorable ones and make it seem like that's how it looks throughout the game

To be clear, I don't think my friend was actively trying to make a bad representation of the game, so much as he wanted to find an example of where the patch in 30 FPS mode makes an improvement. I went on to share it because I knew GAF'ers were looking for a comparison, did it, then realized I should have checked with him to make sure it was OK and luckily he was OK with it and then he gave me some more pics to use. Again, he much prefers the 60 FPS and didn't think the 'improved' shadows was worth sacrificing framerate for.

There's still a noticeable difference in these pics, but not nearly as pronounced. In the first comparison, you can barely even tell.

Well, this pretty much seals it for me, I think I'll stick with 60 whenever I get this game and a PS4 if the difference really is this small most of the time.

the shadows in 30 fps just look a tad darker than the ones in 60 fps, don t see a whole lot of difference honestly. Game is meant to be played in 60 fps, for photo mode I guess for the small detail go 30 fps

Noticeable? I barely see any difference at all.

Look at the edges, particularly in the last shot. You can see some of the sharp, jagged edges on the 60fps version while the 30fps version is softer. It's very slight and you have to know what you're looking for to even be able to tell. No where near worth halving the framerate over.

yeah in the last pic the shadows on his arm not as smooth but not like i going to be paying attention to that while i playing .

The difference is there, but honestly the 30fps shadows look too sharp. When I they said enhanced shadows I thought they mean like some high-end soft variable penumbra hoopla. It's just really sharp shadows which kinda look off.

Those kinds of shadows aren't the one's that will be noticeable in gameplay. It'll be stuff like specific foliage shadows that stick out like a sore thumb in 60fps mode.

Not that I'm complaining, because they obviously didn't have to patch in the better 30fps shadows at all, but I would have preferred ND use the extra processing power for some higher quality AA instead of the shadows. But oh well.

Like he said, the most noticeable difference is the shadow along Joel's arm in the bottom shot being more jagged at 60fps.

So basically the same.
Indeed I was just addressing the word 'noticeable', which he just clarified. Anyway, I don't think anyone's going to stop and notice something as miniscule as that heh.

I think to do any more than they did they would have had to rewrite the entire lighting engine.

I'm glad they didn't. Better AA could actually have made it a difficult choice.

imma play this at 60 and loooooooove it ...

Dat generator room doh :( Is it ok to be excited to be stressed as fuck again? Cause that's what this game does to me. Gets me hard. HARD I TELLS YA.

Noticeable if you spend your time looking for the difference. In general play you won't notice at all and what difference there is certain doesn't justify sacrificing frame rate.

It's not even worth the time it would take to change to 30 fps for photo mode, if those above shots are anything to go by.

Why is the sunlight from 30fps mode clearer/brighter? Maybe there is a lighting difference too?

I showed my wife this image, and my wife says the image on the left looks better, and she doesn't play console games enough to notice resolutions and whatnot; but that won't stop me from trying 1080p60fps to see if I'm satisfied with the performance. I haven't played TLOU yet, so I'm not sure if I should go with 30 plus better shadows (and lighting?), or 60 minus said shadows (and lighting?), but that's why I'll try both.

I don't think I can shed half of the frame rates for almost negligible amount of shadow improvement.

Cool, I'll play in 30 fps then. I primarily play on PC, and have never been one of those that sacrifices nicer graphics just to boost framerate when the game is fully enjoyable without it. The dialog that 60 fps is somehow necessary for all games is just silly. It helps some genres, it's nice for other genres, but by no means is it a must have.

its okay... people who like 60FPS dont care about graphics.... as long as 60FPS who cares what it looks like!

Right?

Framerate over Resolution crowd?

Framerate over Graphics crowd?

So there will be an occasional eye catching shadow that looks like shit in 60fps mode, but the vast majority of shadows that we don't really examine anyways will basically just be ever so slightly aliased. Okay. Still definitely going for 60fps.

... gamers have got to be THE most jaded personalities in the history of forever.

... shadows?! ... we're talking about flippin' shadows? I... I just.. wow.

I mean... But it's...it's easy ... to, to talk about... It's easy to sum it up when you're just talking about shadows. We're sitting in this thread, talking about one of the greatest games of all time, and we in here talking about shadows. I mean, listen, we're talking about shadows, not the game, not the game, not the game, we talking about shadows. Not the game. Not, not ... Not the game that we go out there and die for and play like its our last. Not the game, but we're talking about shadows, man. I mean, how silly is that? ... And we talking about shadows. Its 60 fps or 30 fps. I know that... And i'm not.. I'm not shoving it aside, you know, like it don't mean anything. I know it's important, I do. I honestly do... But we're talking about shadows man. What are we talking about? Shadows? We're talking about shadows, man. We're talking about shadows. We're talking about shadows. We ain't talking about the game. We're talking about shadows, man. When you play the game, and you see what the great Naughty Gods have given us, you see it don't you? You've seen the trailer? You've seen they've given us 1080p. But we're talking about shadows right now. We talking about shadows.

Allen Iverson is GOAT.

It's not all shadows that are affected, it's specific shadows, stuff like foliage like I had expected.

This image is a more accurate portrayal of what the difference is between the shadows which are affected.
