TLOU Remastered: 30 fps option gives better shadow quality [Up: Comparison GIF in OP]

Isn't this a good thing? I can crank up my settings on PC, but then get hit with an FPS drop. Want constant 60 it won't look as good as it could in a screenshot..

WOW, such an amazing difference!!!

It's something you see on PC everyday. And anyone who is sacrificing a higher shadow resolution for playability is a non-gamer in my book.

Looking for The Last of Us PC everyday now like a non-gamer probably

First of all, not my gif, but the point remains.

Secondly, why has Naughty Dog been so secretive with showing us game play? They know it doesn't hold up to scrutiny so they give us some down sampled bullshots instead.

Third, the clothing wrinkle movement is gone as well. So the biggest thing you can take away from all this is that there may be plenty of other things missing that we haven't yet discovered.

But none of this has any relevance to my post. Unless the game is drastically worse, it's still well worth the purchase for people who haven't played it yet. Things like wrinkles and the occasional missing shadow are details so minute and have so little impact on the overall experience this game offers that it really baffles me that there is so much discussion on this.

From pics i have seen the self shadows not really that bad at 60fps IMO.

Thanks, I had noticed lately in this thread some pics zoomed in and cropped heavily to exaggerate differences in shadows, maybe to make a point stand out or some other agenda.

These pics using full screen show a proper balanced view. 60 FPS for me.

This gif is from the reveal like 5 months ago is it not?

No. The reveal only showed their backs. Just watched the reveal again to be sure.

Source for clothing wrinkle being gone because the twitch stream right now has it. And that gif is from a reveal 3 months ago

Wrong about the gif. Also, there was a youtube video of the beginning of the game a few days ago and others on gaf noticed the clothing issue.

It shouldnt baffle anyone that many ps3 owners were thinking of upgrading their copy for $50 and now are having doubts.

Of course the first time player probably won't care. Regardless, these visual omissions and the carefully released screen shots by Naughty Dog deserve some heavy criticism. They kept telling us they didn't want to release any game play and that the lighting was very much improved. Now we see they didn't think some basic effects that were in the ps3 version were worth their time.

As i said in the next thread we have pics showing off all that stuff .
It does not make any sense to judge the whole game off one gif .
for eg some pics

There are many others and this is a massive improvement over the PS3 version.
It should also be noted that all these plus the others from ron bato is the 60fps version .

But there are other pictures that do show off that stuff. Why ignore all the ones that have these effects and focus on the one that does not?

Edit: Beaten

oh my god. are you seriously criticizing a lack of wrinkles in fabric? where's your evidence for the ps3's superior wrinkle tech? also, care to comment on these screens, which are demonstrably better than their ps3 counterpart? might i add that they're running at 60fps, too.

It would make more sense to say that about a gamer who sacrifices playability for a little bump in shadow resolution, also.

HD clothes are obviously using anti-wrinkle technology. Wrinkles are so last gen.

That's a pretty fucking stupid book then

No, not really. Those "shine over substance" people are what made consoles pretty much unplayable to me. It's a shame that ND decided to include a 30FPS mode in the first place. It's a thing of the past (actually, not really, because in the past games were 60FPS) and it needs to go NOW. It's an abdomination of console generations which were underpowered for the expectations people had for the graphics.

You do realize in your previous post you stated that people who were going for 60FPS were non-gamers right?

he said 60 in the other thread. apparently the day-one patch isn't available for DL in his area.

60fps all the pics so far from him are 60fps version still the patch not up for him yet so it don't matter .

EDIT Beaten already

Really strange. If that is the case, then the older shots do seem like one off bugs. I don't know what to think at this point. In either case, I'm playing the 60 fps version

EDIT: Kept staring at it and finally found areas where the lower resolution shows. Man, this stuff is going to be incredibly rare to notice unless you are looking for it. lol

I think every developer should make these tiny tradeoffs if that leads towards more 60 fps games. Nobody (except a few elitists) needs HD shadows, but everybody benefits from playing a game in 60 fps.

This thread is a little embarrassing, so many pages on something so insignificant. I think the shadow resolution is not worth the framerate drop, really, but this is not a game where 60FPS is mandatory either way.

Everyone wins?

Well now... if ND, a developer many tout as a technical master can't bring what basically an improved PS3 game with all the graphical whistles at 60 fps, that doesn't bode well for fans of 60 fps games on consoles now, does it.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha haaaaaaaaahahahahhahaha

It's rather funny since meant it the other way but since some of us know Thrakier we knew what he was trying to say .

A port of a game from a different system on a old engine does not tell us anything about the new system really .
That is like saying the GOW HD collection is going tell us how GOW 3 going to look on PS3 .

It has everything the PS3 version does but at a higher resolution and higher frame rate.

At least we're now concerned about fans of 60 FPS like most obviously are except Thrakier.

Oh lord, here comes Thrakier "god of framerate and gaming tastes".
Jesus, some of you are insufferable.

This is one of the few console threads he could walk into and shout 'High-five, console guys!', instead he finds something else to complain about, and even messes his own shtick up by lining his words up in the wrong order.

Thrakier's Bad Fur Day.

Just wait until the next Driveclub thread, he's probably already wringing his hands in anticipation to call the 30FPS lock "inhumane" and "cataclysmic".

ND releases a 60fps version of TLOU and you still manage to complain about it. You must be really starved for attention.

He has a fair point though.

If you consider framerates that enhance playability more important than shiny graphics effects that slow gameplay down, a pure 60fps only experience would be progress.

30fps is hardware not being able to keep up with the demands you place on it, people are far too easily amazed by flashy graphics when response time and being able to see details in motion feels much more like progress.

Opinions I guess, I just don't understand it.

A day later and we're now suggesting that certain areas of the remaster have been downgraded compared to the ps3 version?

And it certainly looks that way from the screenshots posted :/

Goddamn ND.

No/lower AO on Ps4?
TLOU used precomputed AO for static stuff - there'd be no reason for that to be absent. And the thing that "IS" obviously different - like the circled parts in the GIF are artifacts of different shadow-bias (both versions render the same-amount of shadow detail, but it's offset in PS4 version - in a way that creates artifacts in that particular screenshot).

What stands out to me more is the very-sharp shadows on PS4 - original version went with a heavily filtered/soft shadow look, blending with their approach to indirect shadows/AO from dynamic objects.
I've yet to see any footage of PS4 version demonstrating what indirect shadows look like (assuming they're still there) and that was one of the defining areas of what made TLOU stand out IMO.

Circled or not, there are obvious cutbacks being made in this version.
See my post above - it's not cutbacks, it's basically a single value that has been tweaked differently on PS4.
