Twitch App announced for XBox 360; Coming Today

I hope you like LoL, SC2 and Dota 2.

The current mobile apps for both iOS and Android only support the top 300 channels, and as of writing this post, have 78 games available to view at this very moment (that number fluctuates, of cours). Yes, that includes LoL, StarCraft and Dota, along with old favorites such as Donkey Kong Country, Ocarina of Time, and super oddball games like Abobo's Big Adventure and RPG Maker, of all things.

When you break it down, the top 300 channels on Twitch have a lot more variety than you might think.

So: USA only, Gold only, and limited to 300 channels. This is about as useful as attempting to win a game of Starcraft 2 using only creep.

(it's not even a service that's limited to the US in the first place, FFS)

I sound like a broken record at this point, but the deal Sony has with UStream on the PlayStation 4 is not exclusive, and we don't deal in exclusives when it comes to our apps, either. We want a Twitch app on everything. How else can one achieve world domination? ;)

Both the iOS and Android apps suck major arse (Why, I love channels not loading, the Android app missing chat and stretching the video when ever it auto hides what ever that bar on the bottom of Android tablets is called).

Instead of fixing things like that you instead make an app for the 360, have it US only for no reason and limit not only it , but the iOS (and likely new versions of the Android app) to only a subset of channels!

Why?

Sorry but I still don't get that. What if I really like a streamer who always has like 10 people watching? Why limit the user in what he can see?

Well I am sure I know the answer, it probably lessens the amount of ad dollars you get.

Twitch sucks, their app has been broken for years. Fuck off.
To fix the iOS app you must make sure your device name is all one word with no special characters. The app is badly coded and uses the device name for a check, no idea why.

Go to Settings then general then about then name & change device name to a single word, no space or special characters.

Launch the app and it works as it should. I doubt this post will be noticed as I guess it's not relevant to the 360 version.

Also for some reason I haven't been able to connect to the chat in the iOS app for MONTHS.

This really sucks, I really like the idea of watching people stream games but it looks like Twitch is making everything in their power to prevent me from watching the streams.

None of the mobile apps, nor the Xbox apps serve video ads. Kabam paid for a sponsored spot on the mobile apps, so that's different.

As long as you can watch people you follow it sounds a lot better, bit like making a play list on your pc before jumping in elsewhere.

Still, it seems weird that you limit the top channel listing to 300, why not have a click to show more at the bottom if you want to go deeper? unless you already do, I live in the UK lololz

So the iOS adverts are not the 30 second commercials we see on twitch.tv? the update note which only says now displays ads made me think of commercials at first.

It's still an incredibly half-assed effort, just like the mobile apps. After seeing how gimped the mobile apps have been for years and how this 360 app shows the same gimped nature with absolutely no progression, I have to wonder why anyone is even wasting the energy on it.

I don't think it's half assed. They announced this a year ago and have had an iOS beta going for months apparently. They just don't have the talent to make it happen. I think that limiting it to the top 300 channels and removing search is just to make the experience as smooth as possible for the "event" type consumers simply because they flat lack the ability to make it broad and stable. They chose stability which I guess I'm fine with since I only ever really use Twitch for tournaments.

So is it the top 300 all time in views or top 300 currently like in the link you provided?

It's currently but the top are almost ALWAYS LoL, Dota, SC2, WoW, D3. When a fighting game or popular new game comes out it will get a bump for a short while (couple hours - day) then back to normal. If you aren't into PC games this is pretty much useless app.

I see. Sounds like garbage. Maybe site wide searching is next gen exclusive :p

Top 300 and US only fuck you Twitch and Fuck you Microsoft.

The app support still is mostly a joke for any other country.

Step your game up.

No. Just go look at the top 300 right now, you can watch any game you want to. The current #300 stream has only 31 viewers and is playing a JRPG I've never seen before, the #299 stream is currently playing Age of Empires 2 with 33 viewers. Just in the current top 100 streams there are 40 different games (I counted). You will be able to watch basically ANY game you want to.

Apparently most people here don't realize the massive drop off of viewership after the very top streams.
