Ubisoft issues totally convincing response to Assassin's Creed Unity's resolution

You tried to use lore reasons as an excuse for Ubisoft's content pipeline and compared the early days of film to the current gaming environment in 2014. I think you have the problem.
Because there is an actual lore reason for the subject matter that you were criticizing. And video games are still in their early inception. I was using the early days of film as an analogy for the current state of gaming. Don't insult me because I share different opinions than you.

I wasn't wondering any of this - I was wondering why 99% of the people didn't seem to read the original comment which just sounded like it was worded poorly but clearly said the lower resolution was a result of CPU bottlenecks that exist in both systems.

But ignorance is better because it fuels outrage, the typical gamer response.

CPU bottlenecks =/= lower resolution.

CPU bottlenecks == lower fps.

Before you insult the entire (sorry, 99%) community you should probably have a basic understanding of how hardware impacts performance.

Yes they are. The PS4 is a bit more powerful but this doesn't make such a difference. The PS4 is easier to develop for because it is basically a PC in a box. The XBox-Hardware is a bit more complex because of its eSRAM and other minor hardware, so developers has

The first games runs better on PS4 because some developers had a learning curve on Xbox One. Many new games run roughly the same on PS4 and Xbox One, but with an slight advantage on PS4 (better resolution, better framerate), because the hardware has a bit more power. Certainly AC Unity will have a more stable framerate on PS4. But on such CPU heavy games the advantage of PS4 is really only a very minor thing.

See above for CPU.

The PS4's GPU physically has more compute cores than the Xbox One. It is literally at least 30% more powerful than the Xbox One's GPU.

Literally doesn't adress the specific issue.

Yes, large crowds, 1:1 buildings, all very lovely. Optimised to run at 900p on xbox one. Lovely.

now explain why that 900p version I xbox can't run at 1080p on PS4. If you say the PS4 has higher LODs, or better AA etc, that's fine.

I know you can't really own up to it, so please, just fucking say nothing then.

They tried that for Watch_Dogs for a while and it didn't work either. They're just simply incompetent at messaging and don't care because they get paid either way.

I'm not sure what's insulting about it. Receiving a text is not offensive. Unless you have a guilty conscience about something? ;)

This man is gaslighting and literally spinning a lie hoping no one will notice.

"Hey, that thing I said a couple of days ago--you know, where I specifically said that the resolution and framerate of both versions was being locked to avoid 'debates and stuff?' Never happened. Nope, you must have just misinterpreted what I really said, when I very specifically said it and included the reasoning. It's okay though, I forgive you."

Incredible. Don't believe your lying eyes.

I mean it was pretty quiet regarding this particular topic over the last few months. So I guess Ubisoft wanted to break the ice.

They deemed graphical features that used to be a major part of the game as discardable because the amount of resources to get it on just one platform was likely deemed to be excessive, I deemed the entire game discardable.
Is there a source for the bolded? Because last I checked the reason that they gave was due to some of the effects possibly damaging the gameplay, like the very overly done depth of field effect, where did they say that the graphical features are locked due to the amount of resources?

Spencer wants to take the heat off.

Obviously trying to save face at this point, but I gather the suspicion that the first PR release was the more honest one.

I'm sure there's many, money different rea$ons

I wonder how this will affect the other Ubi games, will Far Cry 4 be 900, and the same as the Xbone version?

What about the inevitable Assassin's creed Rouge "HD version" that will come to PS4 and Xbone probs next year sometime, will that be 900 on both?

Like... how? You are expressing 2 different ideas in those sentences. "Chose the wrong words" is the understatement of the year.

I know you can't really own up to it, so please, just fucking say nothing then.

He told the truth. Which is forbidden.

Its not incompetent messaging. Their problems are that gamers today know a lot more about their hobby than they did before, and that the internet allows people to point out bullshit spin and outright lies way beyond their circle of friends. In other words, the problem is they cant get away with lying, not with how they lie.

Or they didn't. What evidence do you have beyond Spencer making a retweet on his personal Twitter account?

We all know that MS has rights for this game to advertise on their platform, so it makes sense why this 900p on both systems because they tried to raise resolution of some games already to match PS4 like Destiny.

That is possibly the biggest non-non-non response I've ever seen.

"Blah blah blah more beautiful blah, new engines are hard."

Same Game Engine on Better Hardware has to lead to a better performing game.

If bumping the resolution was hard, they would have never released the PS4 patch for AC4.

Is there a source for the bolded? Because last I checked the reason that they gave was due to some of the effects possibly damaging the gameplay, like the very overly done depth of field effect.

Is your reason from some two faced misleading source of damage control PR from Ubisoft like the focus of this thread? Because if so, not interested in non-truth, as they've been proven to deal in.

Ubi left out the last sentence.

Haha, awesome.

Seriously though, the game does genuinely have some damn detailed environments, and a ton of detailed NPC's on screen. To my eyes, this game looks way more impressive than Watch Dogs, so I'm not surprised this is only 900p.

Obviously trying to save face at this point, but I gather the suspicion that the first PR release was the more honest one.

They learned a little bit from the Watch_Dogs debacle. It hasn't translated into anything useful but boy are they doing their best. They get the participation ribbon for trying. Good effort. You didn't win but get 'em next time, Yves.

Is it sad that this kind of intellectual dishonesty from UbiSoft is just expected now? Nevermind the clearly clashing commentary with regard to the framerate being limited on purpose, just go far beyond on all that to see how often this kind of thing occurs with Ubi.

I mean, is it hard to achieve 1080p/60fps? Even if I say "Yes, damn hard!", it's important to note that Ubi can do it. They have the money, they have the resources, they have the time needed to make it happen -- and it's not some kind of "limits of computation" thing, it's simply their limited outset. I mean, tell me Ubi, at what number of NPC AI do you suddenly cross the threshold of Can Do 1080p to Can't Do, because the moment you hit that threshold is the moment you are hurting your game at the expense of a unit, or even maybe a hundred units, I will not care about, I will not interact with, and that will not fundamentally change the game for me. But that was assuming this wasn't just some big lie, which it is, so the point is moot I guess.

Getting ridiculously sick of Ubi's attitude. They claim they know what the gold standard is, and as big as they are, they determine they will not hit that standard because reasons. So let us now be as intellectually dishonest and write articles with headlines: "AC:Unity said by developers to not achieve Gold Standard of past games" -- it's at least on par with the kind of bullshit their PR spews.

Already made my post in the other topic:

Wooooow epic bullshit.

Pontbriand goes on to say that he understands why someone might think that’s the case based on a recent interview, adding “I simply chose the wrong words when talking about the game’s resolution, and for that I’m sorry.”

No you fucking didn't. Who do you think you're fooling? Who the hell searches for words to describe an event happening and then falls on "We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff'?" That's someone describing a precise accounting of internal discussions that went on, and he was not supposed to share that shit out loud so he got caught.

How fucking dumb does Ubisoft think gamers are? Profoundly, apparently. The whole post is them trying to convince us how beautiful the game is (which is not the goddamn point), and then them saying nonsense like this:

Which, of course, had some gamers wondering: If this is a truly new-gen game, why not deliver it in full 1080p on both consoles?

No, that is not what gamers were wondering you gargantuan fucking liars.

I think it's very telling how ignorant publishers seem to think consumers are.

They keep referring to CPU bottlenecks, which are irrelevent. Trying to pretend he made a mistake in his words, when it was very clear.

PS4 is known to be more powerful. XB1 owners probably know this, there was a big enough uproar over it. They also, if they own an XB1, don't care. The resolution debates have died down, because it's expected that the PS4 will outperform the XB1. In this odd case where it's "parity", it raises questions because, all things being equal, the PS4 can output the same game at a higher resolution. It's that simple.

Ubisoft think their potential consumer base are stupid. It's as simple as that. That's the respect publishers have for you, as a consumer.

I'm just fed up of both developers and the games media acting like it's stupid to care about resolution and framerate.

Either tech matters, or it doesn't. You can't have developers trying to sell a game based on how big it's crowds are, or have a journalist write a preview that's super excited about how pretty a game is, and then turn around and say we're being shallow nit-pickers who care more about specs than the experience.

Does gameplay matter more than visuals and tech? Absolutely. But don't spend half your time saying "THIS 1:1 BUILDING SCALE IS ONLY POSSIBLE WITH THE AWESOME POWER OF NEXT GEN!!" and then act like we're crazy when we care about resolutions and framerate.

Like... how? You are expressing 2 different ideas in those sentences. "Chose the wrong words" is the understatement of the year.

I know you can't really own up to it, so please, just fucking say nothing then.

Yup. You can't claim you misspoke when the clarification really has absolutely nothing to do with the original statement.

I honestly still plan to play it (because we'll never know the truth) but this seems like another one of those 'people aren't getting the issue' problems.

Just to clarify because I feel like I hear a lot of people brush it off as console wars. The problem isn't that the two consoles are running at the same resolution. It's that the reason that they said the resolution is the same is to "avoid debate". Who knows, maybe the XB1 version was running better than the PS4 version for some reason and they actually had to lower the resolution on it to match the PS4. It's not a console war topic.

Lets just say one day MS proves that the cloud can do what they said it can. Shouldn't everyone be mad if Ubisoft comes out and says, "yeah, were not going to use the cloud because we want to avoid debate"?

We'll never know if he just misspoke or all this is just damage control (so I'll try to take them at word unless we hear more news) but if he was telling the truth, this is fucked for everyone.

I love your posts Amir0x.

That seems like largely anecdotal evidence at best.

It's very insulting to imply that my opinions are the result of a "favor" via text message. Not to mention that there's no point in saying anything of that nature as it doesn't add anything to the discussion, basically, don't reference me when you feel like saying something that doesn't add anything to the discussion.

Guys we all know that it's the PS4 holding it back.

Straight up fact talking over at misterxmedias blog

The unity is sonys doing. After dx11.3 patch unity was hitting 100fps. Force parity was sony idea

Dat 100fps coding from the Ubi masters on XB1!!!

How fucking dumb does Ubisoft think gamers are? Profoundly, apparently.

The question now becomes: what does their behavior say?

I am being 100% serious. If they don't want people to treat them like they're dumb, then they need to stop paying Ubisoft to treat them like they're dumb.

This really goes for anything having to do with the hype cycle.

If i would summarize this blog post from Ubisoft, i could put it like that

"not enough PS4 pre-orders cancelled, so 900p for everyone"

Top Bottom
