Ubisoft issues totally convincing response to Assassin's Creed Unity's resolution

Isn't it possible that the dev team are using GPU compute to handle some of these AI routines? Couldn't this explain the increased load on the GPU and the need to drop the resolution to 1600x900?

The issue really isn't even about the resolution. It's honestly fine if the game runs at 900p on the PS4. People took issue with the fact that the producer said that they were both going to be the same because they wanted to avoid debates. Which obviously suggests that the game wouldn't really be optimized for the PS4 because they simply didn't want there to be any differences between both versions of the game.

I already cancelled my june preorder and I won't buy AC:U unless they release a fully optimized PS4 version. Why should I play a game which is ignoring better and more capable hardware for the sake of parity? Their previous statement was very clear and so is my opinion of the game.

Proof. Everything is in germanese.

Ubisoft are doing a very good job of selling me on getting Shadow of Mordor instead of their title. Unity was the first AC game I was considering buying at launch since Brotherhood. Now though, I think I'll leave it. There's plenty of other games to take up my time in the coming months.

I don't genuinely think the co-marketing deal resulted in this decision, but I do think it is preventing them from being straight with their customers.

At what point in time will developers say enough is enough and consider 1080p the base standard? Because apparently brand-new hardware from 2013 somehow isn't it. Am I still going to be seeing longass essays from Ubisoft in 2020 about how their engine is so "amazing" it can't reach 1080p?

For fuck's sake, we have 4K right around the corner and yet the console gaming industry is still sitting here poking their eyes and eating paste passing off 900p as their cutting-edge offerings. We were stuck in 720p for this long due to the ancient console hardware from 2005/6 but jesus christ, new hardware just came out and devs still can't be arsed to have decent resolution output?

The issue is the difference between the two. PS4 has a 30-40% more powerful GPU, so your statement doesn't hold weight.

The game itself was so rife with glitches/problems that who's to say where Ubisoft's mess ends and the modder's mess begins.
They were unfinished effects dude, unfinished effects are unfinished for a reason, the rain shimmering and the shadows from headlights flickering is the result of the mod, in any game, when you turn on unfinished assets, they will be glitchy and require a lot of work to fix.

At this point either they'll bump the resolution or add a couple additional silly effects over the Xbone version so they can say there's no parity.

Xbox One owners are treated to a roaring rendition of Yakety Sax every time they make a mistake during a parkour run.

So basically they are admitting that they are more inconpetent than other devs who could squeeze more out of the (in fact) more powerful PS4...

lol, well, I already cancelled my order, so that's that.

I'm just fed up of both developers and the games media acting like it's stupid to care about resolution and framerate.

Either tech matters, or it doesn't. You can't have developers trying to sell a game based on how big it's crowds are, or have a journalist write a preview that's super excited about how pretty a game is, and then turn around and say we're being shallow nit-pickers who care more about specs than the experience.

Does gameplay matter more than visuals and tech? Absolutely. But don't spend half your time saying "THIS 1:1 BUILDING SCALE IS ONLY POSSIBLE WITH THE AWESOME POWER OF NEXT GEN!!" and then act like we're crazy when we care about resolutions and framerate.

So much this. It drives me nuts.

didn't read lol

bottom line ps4 is more powerful than xbone = fact
most ps4 gmaes run at 1080p = fact
ass creed 4 suddenly became 1080p after fan outrage = fact
asscreed unity is nothing special graphically = opinion
ubisoft is a bunch of snakes and liars = fact
watchdogs was unimpressive and ran at 900p = fact

bottom line boycott ass creed unity. they will take the hint and make it 1080p same as they did asscreed 4

Best purchase this year that game is legit!

Seeing more people canceling there pre order...good job, vote with your wallet.

kind of interesting though. people who in past generations would probably never have been tasked to do PR (although in a similar role) are having to do PR on their games now.

that and consumers are more educated and less and less likely to be fooled by some slick rick pr dude :)

Already made my post in the other topic:

Wooooow epic bullshit.

No you fucking didn't. Who do you think you're fooling? Who the hell searches for words to describe an event happening and then falls on "We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff'?" That's someone describing a precise accounting of internal discussions that went on, and he was not supposed to share that shit out loud so he got caught.

How fucking dumb does Ubisoft think gamers are? Profoundly, apparently. The whole post is them trying to convince us how beautiful the game is (which is not the goddamn point), and then them saying nonsense like this:

No, that is not what gamers were wondering you gargantuan fucking liars.

Exactly, how on earth did he mess up and misspeak an entire/thoughtout/purposefull sentence given the climate of the resolution-gate?

Isn't it possible that the dev team are using GPU compute to handle some of these AI routines? Couldn't this explain the increased load on the GPU and the need to drop the resolution to 1600x900?
Maybe and instead of this response it would have been a better route to go. Not sure that will help this recover from the first statement though which was fundamentally different.

Don't like it? Don't buy it. Support your ideals with your wallets along with words.

While I neither had any intention of buying Unity from the start (not until it hit bargain bin), I understand the reason behind their practice. "Offend neither userbase and avoid debacle"; however, unlike Blizzard or Bungie, they just outright let out the internal reason behind this shift towards parity that may be adopted by many more developers/publishers in order to be in good standing w/ consumers and MS/Sony.

Regardless of whether Ubisoft is need of PR overhaul and a cup of STFU, I wonder if the outrage against forced parity should perhaps cast a wider net henceforth.

Sadly, I don't think the average consumer I. Knows about these issues or II. Will care about it. So enthusiasts that want the best out of their games, are kind of left screwed when companies do this. The only time that these companies get in trouble, is if it's a really big failure (like a game being broken like Battlefield 4 where even mainstream consumers get pissed off).

I do agree, that you shouldn't buy something that you don't support though. I know I personally won't be buying this now. But I don't see it making Ubisoft change their stance. I really fuckin hope this doesn't become the norm with other companies/titles this gen. That's really the bigger worry here.

The game in general, not the game with the mod. I'll edit the post to fix the confusion you got from it.

So if I'm gauging this correctly we've already signed off on the fact that MS paid for this?

Bullshit PR statements aside I have a hard time fathoming that. Seems like it's the most convenient explanation as to why there is no difference but until Ubisoft ponies up another reason (which it looks like they won't) then it's open season for conspiracy lovers.

NO, first of all ps4 has 50% more CU's for the calculations, and on top of that it's better suited to handle GPGPU tasks because it also has 8 ACE/64 queues, and the xbone has 2ACE/16 queues.

Their "clarification" of this matter is somehow more insulting than the original excuse of "to avoid debates and stuff."

I'm sorry, but I'm out Ubi. I have a huge backlog and there are a ton of great games coming out, so I passing on Unity.

Yeh, I'm aware of that. I should have replied to one of the countless posts stating confidently that being CPU limited shouldn't affect rendering resolution.

Maybe Microsoft just don't want their customers feel like they are second class citizens? If not for Microsoft this game probably wouldn't be gree... oh, well I'm sure Microsoft is giving them plenty of reason for pushing the parity thing.

So, is there a PC version and will it have 900p restrictions? That would be hilarious.

I cant wait for the super top secret MS Parity Clause contract to leak. I can already see the glorious thread, if it's real.

lies in the very first couple sentences
Thank you!
I stopped reading the bullshit after:

"We spent four years building the best game we could. Why would we hold it back?"

BECAUSE YOU JUST FUCKING TOLD US YOU DID TO AVOID DEBATES.

Jesus, these people really treat us like idiots.

The game in general, not the game with the mod. I'll edit the post to fix the confusion you got from it.
I only played the ps4 version, which was definitely optimized and ran well. I'm talking solely about the unfinished effects that were put into the game by modding. Do that to any game and you will not get a great end result without a ton of tuning. And unlike modders, game programmers don't have as much time as possible to fix glitches for unfinished effects that weren't supposed to be activated in the first place.

I fear the worst for pc..because i have said it in numerous threads now made by Ubisoft Kiev they don't have a great track record of making a stable pc game at all.

This should have been their initial statement.

People would easily and happily buy "Our game is so full of graphics that resolution was not the highest priority."

I am beyond confused why Ubi is unable to hit 1080p on their titles this generation.

Games like Mordor and Infamous are both beautiful open world games that are 1080p on PS4 and yet Ubi couldn't hit it with Watch Dogs or Unity.

Maybe their engines are far too cpu bound and they need to do a bit of redesigning?

Well its better they finally just came out and said its 900p and that wont change. It doesnt answer any of the other concerns people had but more dishonesty and smoke and mirrors would have only damaged them more.

This sort of co marketing caused tech parity is a shitty practice and Ubisoft wont get my money. If I play the game I will get it used.

My eyes are firmly on Dragon Age and COD to see what they do.

This still isn't accounting for the difference in power between the consoles, near enough every other game runs at a higher resolution on PS4. If this game is the same resolution and frame rate on both then surely they aren't using the PS4 to its full capacity, as well all know for a FACT that it's a more capable machine!

I feel they think their customers are stupid or something... :-/

It could be that, or also coupled with the position that maybe they can't say things...

There's really very little reason for this game, of all possible releases, to have parity despite the divide between the platforms it's on. It's either laziness or there are interests pushing for a more leveled experience between the two console versions.

Considering this is Ubisoft, it can really be either one of those reasons.

As of now, Assassin’s Creed Unity is locked at 900p. But why “stop” there? “We know a lot of gamers consider 1080p with 60 frames per second to be the gold standard, especially on the new generation of consoles,” Pontbriand says. “We realize we had also pushed for 1080p in some of our previous games, including AC4. But we made the right decision to focus our resources on delivering the best gameplay experience, and resolution is just one factor. There is a real cost to all those NPCs, to all the details in the city, to all the systems working together, and to the seamless co-op gameplay. We wanted to be absolutely uncompromising when it comes to the overall gameplay experience. Those additional pixels could only come at a cost to the gameplay.

What a farce.

It's pretty evident that MS is money hatting to keep the parity between them and their competitors, considering that the Xbone is the lowest common denominator. Trying to come up with BS claims that 30 fps somehow would be better is pure nonsense.

I saw your post from the bottom scrolling up.

"Oh that looks cool. A yellow wave, Sunny D ad picture?"

[quote ]

"ewwwwwwww!"

It pretty much covers the amount of lies and bad PR Ubisoft has sent out over the years. Ubisoft is the company who tells you the ocean wave of...well, you know is actually seawater.

Great choice - it's an excellent game, about 20-24 hours worth of fun, maybe even more if you get creative. I'm really looking forward to the sequels. I want to see more of what Monolith can do with their nemesis system.

You are the man when it comes to this stuff.

Is it possible MS would demand res parity with the PS4 version, at the expense of FPS? Would they really be willing to go ahead and release a game that runs at 20-25 FPS average just to maintain that air of equivalence in performance, since people are so focused on resolution right now? And as reported a demo Xbone version was running really rough at sub 30 FPS recently.

Ubi has to know that if the game runs completely equal on both platforms in res and FPS in the end we would know there's fuckery afoot. Could they be that stupid in digging the hole deeper and deeper for themselves with this repeated damage control if we find out the parity lock was true? That's why I'm beginning to wonder if a Bone version running at 900p sub 30's FPS could actually be a reality.

I only played the ps4 version

I'm talking about the PC version. PS4 version would likely get 10 times the testing/fixing of PC regardless.

And unlike modders, game programmers don't have as much time as possible to fix glitches for unfinished effects that weren't supposed to be activated in the first place.

Exactly, Ubisoft deemed it a poor use of time to leave anybody to work on something that would only be useable for one platform and required any more time than the bare minimum to work it in (PC) and said "nope", which is essentially what they're doing with this, thanks for agreeing with me. Except this time they're doing it with the biggest share of customers, rather than the smallest.

I refuse to play games that don't render internally at the native resolution of the TV. Not buying AC unless it's 1080p.

It pretty much covers the amount of lies and bad PR Ubisoft has sent out over the years. Ubisoft is the company who tells you the ocean wave of...well, you know is actually seawater.
I actually find today's blatant lie even more offensive than the original parity statement. It insults my intelligence.
