UK Retailer GAME is dead | Brera's Lament

I try. I'm more committed to the people I work with than the company - some really good people are going to lose their jobs over this.

Because I just said I would go in to help them out.

But what?! A few cheap DS games? :p

On your day off and with no guarantee of pay? You're a better man than I.

3p here I come!

I'm in my local GS right now, as busy as always, plenty of stock but prices ain't put of this world. Currently have mario strikers, mad world and crysis2, total, £10.47 but I dunno...will I even play them?

Mad world is 48p, I have it already still wrapped but I'll give it to a mate

It'll be interesting to see which way it does fall: Supermarkets pick up the slack/Online Retailers become stronger/A New Challenger Appears...

Hopefully a new challenger appears sometimes i just want to walk into a dedicated game store and see their selection pick up a game i may have missed or grab a bargain and play on the same day. Ordering online doesn't offer me that.

Supermarkets will be the top 10 games at best with maybe a smattering of others.

The Iron Shiek and Dusty commenting on GAME Group would be the highlight of my morning so far. Currently its Brera shifting between remorse and stubborn courage with his GAME Shares.

Same. But Brera is going through 7 stages of grief:

1. SHOCK & DENIAL-

2. PAIN & GUILT-

3. ANGER & BARGAINING-

4. "DEPRESSION", REFLECTION, LONELINESS-

5. THE UPWARD TURN-

6. RECONSTRUCTION & WORKING THROUGH-

7. ACCEPTANCE & HOPE-

But I don't know if we are at stage 3 or stage 7 though.

I think those days are gone to be honest.

People had already transitioned to supermarkets, there was no real difference between HMV and Game, and both will seek to capitalise on this. If someone moves in to buy I think I think it would be more of the same, just culling the surplus retail units.

Online is your dedicated gaming store now unfortunately.

Just bought

Mario strikers
Punch out
Metroid other m
Disaster day of crisis

£13. Not bad.

I was casually impressed in game station, plenty of stock and people browsing. Plenty of new stock as well.

Also saw a pre order for a namco shooter I had forgotten about. In the end I pre ordered a copy of the new ridge racer on ps3.

Disappointed by the 3ds selection. £17.99 for starfox...9.99 would have been a buy! Ace combat was tempting at 9.99 but I'm going through a crisis right now!

I wonder if the people in charge actually realise what they did wrong, or if they're just going to blame the consumer for buying from other online retailers.

I'm imagining you walking around wearing a sandwich board saying "The end is not nigh!" and patting random people on the back.

We are at Stage 7 guys, Stage 7 has been reached!

Analysts say Game is now looking for a suitor, with US rival Gamestop being named as the leading candidate.

However, analyst Mark Photiades of Singer Capital Markets said no buyer was expected to come forward before any move by Game into administration.

"We suspect that any potential suitor would prefer to wait for a formal administration process," he said.

"Through a pre-pack, the suitor would have much greater flexibility around store liabilities."

Nothing new but when your financial woes are being written up on the mainstream news, writings on the wall. How long do you guys think till store bomba prices a la Woolworths?

Haven't seen much about the Australian branch in this thread, but I assume that it will be pulled down with the rest of it.

Better spend my points then.

FWIW, Mass Effect 3, SF x Tekken etc were sold at GAME in Australia.

Well annoyingly I have around £11 on my account, but no physical card to redeem it from. Don't think my replacement ever got sent out.

They can redeem your points if you give them your name and address. My Dad has had a reward card since GAME first took over EB, but lost it years ago. He redeemed the points during the sale.

If this is true they will shut down tonight, now that its in the news, they can't lose that.

Good news for them that in the T&C's they reserve the right to alter the reward program at any stage.

My guess is that tonight you get an email saying by a certain time any points over 1 year old will be invalid.

Excellent thank you!

Will try and head there today if I have time, means I have around £50+ to spend, so a new release that I've missed and some preowned titles.

Not in store they can't, as a security measure a reward card must be swiped to redeem anything. The only thing you can do is spend the points on the website if you don't have the actual card.

I might hate their sales methods, and they may be run by the management equivalent of potatoes but I will be really sad to see the day when gaming has no specialist nationwide high street retailer. I wonder if they will try to keep some of the business going with an online presence or perhaps sell that part of the business separately (similar to Dixons).

Their phone lines are screwed. Either that or they've took them down. Just tried ringing to get my reward card linked to my account online.

The Online Orders number just gives me a disconnect tone and then the call ends. The Product Information number does connect, but after telling me to go to the website for info on Mass Effect 3, I get a recorded message saying they're "unable to transfer calls to their call centre".

Hey, it costs money to man and power a call centre you know!

Really? Crap, sorry then. I guess my old man had his wires crossed or something.
