Seems Milton Keynes Midsummer Place has fallen.

I helped set that one up, when EB bought Game around 2000 the EB in the Shopping Centre sent loads of staff and stock over to get them going. I still remember writing rude messages on their deliveries from Lynx to the warehouse guy over there. It was always a pleasure to receive a box of PSOnes with a message saying "You c**t!!" on it.

Have they closed either the GAME or Gamestation in the CentreMK, as they are literally opposite each other, with a CEX somewhere in between.

There was a game station but it closed a few months back unless there is one I'm unaware of.
Yeah, that was my understanding. The St Davids (1) Gamestation closed a while ago (after moving before that).]

Game Station is/was in St Davids 1 opposite bear factory (the the door that comes out where mothercare used to be on the Hayes
That's the one which was closed. I guess it's been a while since you've been in.

No idea unfortunately, just going by what I saw on MCV. I imagine they would get rid of at least one, not been to CMK for years so didn't know there was a GameStation across from the Game, ridiculous.

Also, re: Glasgow, what about the game that was in the Enoch Centre down on Argyll St.? - I assume the franchised area in the Debenhams attached was closed many a year ago...?

The fact that the sign is directing them all the way out to Glasgow Fort does not bode well for them...

Either way, I still miss the old location (now the White Shop... no real light, but plenty of atmosphere c.7 years ago)

They really dicked over the adminstrators with the fire-sale a couple of weeks ago.
I dunno what the hell they were thinking there, with that crazy week, their pre-owned stock was going out the door for far less than they actually paid for it. WTF?
Killzone 2 for 48p. Oof!

Cashflow probably, each penny was more valuable to GMG pre-administration than post. In hindsight, it was merely an attempt to hold the tide back. Too little too late.

Game in Sauchiehall/Buchanan Galleries are gone. Gamestation on Sauchiehall st has gone. Dunno about the others, I'd imagine Union st will stay open for the time being.

well, I guess that's that. G-Force games it is then.

Edit: Reload games still there? can't remember.

The original MCV writeup suggested that about half the stores would go, but it's sounding like a lot more than that, given some of the closures; it sounds like a lot of the towns with several stores are closing *more* than half of them. Maybe that's just in favour of keeping some stores open in smaller areas?

Surely in wolverhampton one has to go. There are two game stores on the same street and a gamestation close by.

Man it'd be a shame to see that Gamestation go, I got many a retro bargain from their in the past and that Gamestation played a big part in my Ocarina of Time adventure when that game launched.

G-force and CeX (which opened recently)

Reload are gone now, they closed a few weeks back I think?

Reload doesn't surprise me. G-Force will become popular again, I would guess, but where is CeX? Union Street as well? Been a good few months since I was last yonder.

Also: GAF drinks night in the old city, sometime? ;)

G-force is always popular from what I've seen (although maybe it will be more so with the recent closures)

CeX is right across the road from G-force/what was Gamestation. Can't miss it.

Usually what happens is that the administrator will look at a worst case scenario close the maximum number of shops and lay off the maximum number of staff, if they find that the market is large enough to accommodate more locations they will reopen them and rehire the staff.

They make a clean break that way, unencumbered by loss-making locations and dead weight leases.

man glasgowgaf representing!

Gonna have to take a walk around after unia nd see the damage for myself me thinks. My condolences to the staff of course but damn, just feels weird knowing that about 5 stores in the city centre just shuttered immediately =/

My mate has just phoned to say Gamestation in Nottingham is still open - don't know about Game.

Anyone know about the Long Eaton branch of Gamestation?

Glad to hear Nottingham's ok, I wonder if the GAME in Nottingham is closing because that's only like 5 mins away from Gamestation. Long Eaton branch is my local and I wont know until tomorrow when I go into town. Fingers crossed though.

yea, you're right. The place was quite empty when it was open and I don't recall it have anything worthwhile to purchase.

lolol yup.

Anyone remember 1-Up Games that was like 5 minutes away from Haymarket station in Edinburgh? That place only lasted like 2 years i think.

They also opened in the same location where Microplay gaming (LAN center if anyone has been there before) moved to (and then closed not long after >_> )

They had a boxed Megadrive which I really wish I bought now >_>

Man, this whole thing is going to be really bad for the UK market. It already was in a bad state but this makes it even worse.

GameStation Grimsby has closed. Had to get the customers out and close the shutters down at 1pm. A lot of customers seem pissed (since most seem to like GameStation here more than GAME.) Lost my job anyway.

Can't say I didn't expect it, but today is a sad day. :(

Yup, not really a great thing to be at the mercy of the big supermarket chains. Most of them already stock a pitiful amount of games and hardware.

Thats just todays closures.
What happens next week?

Obviously if no buyer is found for the remaining locations then all 609 will be closed. I don't see that as a likely scenario, the UK games market is the third largest homogeneous market in the world. There is room for a specialist retailer, just not one that has 609 locations with two or three spots in the same town, sometimes even on the same high street.

They did?! wow! all I could remember seeing were those Final Fantasy and Gears of War action figures. oh...and Nintendo candy.

Yup, it was also supposed to be a LAN gaming center but it never really got off the ground. (they also said they were supposed to open the back room at some point to allow more PCs for people to use but it never did happen)

Sorry to hear that mate. Go drown your sorrows in the barge ;D.

My work partner has just driven past Long Eaton branch. Said they are closed with a note outside so I'm guessing they have been shut too.

Glasgow Fort?!?! That is... not at all accesable from the city center, is it? And why would it ignore Union St.?

Edit: my word, quite a few members of GlasgowGAF here!

Braehead and The Fort were always the two biggest money makers in Scotland (Braehead is actually one of the biggest for taking money in the UK).

My old store in East Kilbride got closed but the Gamestation remains open despite taking less money than Game and being in a worse location. Wonder what the logic is behind that decision.

How much notice did you get? Or was it just a phone call saying "Ok, close the store down right now. Sorry about your job"?

Bingo!

A lot of users will talk about online, I can guarantee the majority of people still don't have access to online shopping.

Kids etc.

They will come back leaner and focused or someone else will take its place, to big of a gap not to be filled.

This extended console cycle has hurt stores like this bad.

Really surprised they closed both Lakeside stores, I ALWAYS visited those places ever since I was a nipper. The new store sucked though
Wow, both are gone? It baffled me even as a kid how they had two stores there like that, within 50 metres of each other in the same shopping centre. I know the upstairs one used to be an EB, but there's no way they should have both remained open when GAME took it over. Having said that, I haven't stepped foot in Lakeside for about five years, so I don't really know what the recent situation has been.

Shit. I hope you land on your feet dude.

Cheers man. It's a shame, since the staff at our store were awesome and we worked really well together. It was just unfortunate we were in a less-profitable location than GAME is. There were many small crowds of people looking through the shutters after we shut; as I was leaving there was a woman with what looked like a pile of games ready to trade in at the door.

A lot of people have been going into GAME and complaining (since some have pre-ordered the Star Wars Kinect console with us etc.) It's a shame, but not my problem I guess. GAME themselves seem to be worried they might be next... reward cards, refunds, trade-ins and gift cards all not working in their store as of this afternoon.

Patryn said:

I was there in the shop. The assistant manager came out the back with a sheet of paper to stick on the door, and that was it. I was serving someone at the time... we had to quickly finish the transaction and get everyone out. It happened very fast. We were all kind of expecting it to happen, just not so soon. Apparently we might have to go in again this week to box all of the stock up for sending back. I assume we will be paid...

They may close every single one.
The protection against the landlords wanting their quarterly rent ends next week, someone has to pay that if the store is still open.
Not sure how it works if some stores are "sold". I don't even know how they can sell them, if they don't own them. They may just let them all go then later re-negotiate with desperate landlords if a new business buys part of the old chain.
They'll certainly have plenty of choice.

The Goldacre case is likely to be the thing that will stuff this admin before it's even started.

I thought it was just a rebranding of microplay given the same location and same flawed business plan =/

WTF? You physically had to kick the customers out? That's insane. Sorry about your job though.

Hammersmith GAME reckon they'll be okay. Not surprising given that the only other place to buy games here is a shelf in a medium sized Sainsbury's...
