I only have S-video for Gamecube, but I think GBI ULL's 240p looks better than both the GB Player's 480i and standard GBI's 480i. It's still not what I would consider great due to the blur and color bleed of s-video, but I can't justify $240+ for that damn Component cable.

RetroRGB has a few comparison images up on their site. http://retrorgb.com/gameboyplayer.html

Swiss 240p looks significantly better than GBP 480p (blurry). Super Gameboy 240p is still superior to both.

I run GBI ULL 240p via RGB and it's fantastic. I know that's not a viable option for Americans, though. It's a shame.

p.s. I've been lurking this thread for about a year and my GAF account only got activated recently, will have to do a big post explaining my setup sometime soon. Used to have two PVMs but I switched to a Framemeister about 6 months ago.

A shop here in Hong Kong offers HDMI installment on almost any console for around 60USD, with good customer feedback. I'm not really interested as scanlines are essential to me, but I'm surprised you don't see this kind of mod elsewhere?

I've seen mods that are nothing more than composite-to-HDMI converters crammed inside the console shell.

You gotta lay down a lot more specifics about the internals for something like this to not come across sketchy as hell.

Yeah that's what I also suspect it is, will check when I've visited them.

Just ordered everything. I'm sure I'll fall in love how my Genesis looks through RGB that I'll have to convert my other consoles over. Dat rabbit hole seems deep.

Sorry I forgot to mention, the Retro Console Acc. lady also does custom cable jobs (or at least she did) so i'd ask for an SNES and Saturn RGB SCART cables with RCA Stereo outs to make things easy for you (RGB goes to the converter, the two RCA stereo plugs go straight to whatever component input on your TV) if you want to go that route. Genesis you can just plug a 3.5 mm to RCA stereo from headphone port to your TV (if you've got a model 1 anyway).

I'm still holding out on getting my NES and PCengine DUO modded...but it'll happen eventually.

My bargain XRGB-3 has arrived. Let the PAL nightmare begin!

Picked up a Bang & Olufsen MX7000 with a motorised stand near me for cheap.
Unfortunaly it came without a Remote - which are quite expensive.

Beautiful build quality overall. Excellent Sound and great build in deinterlacer.
Beautiful, man. Love the colour! I have an MX4000 (posted earlier in thread). Sadly mine turned out to be an older revision without de-interlace, but it's still a lovely set. Probably looking to offload it soon though - tiny apartment and all that.

Good 240p conversion isn't trivial.

It doesn't seem worthwhile to me to insert HDMI into each console when you can just spend for a nice upscaler instead.

I would be curious to see if the quality is actually reasonable, but with so many composite to HDMI conversions, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Does ULL work properly over component or do you specifically need a PAL system and RGB cables? I know ULL mode is monochrome over S-vid on an NA system.

I saw a 27 inch Trinitron at the Goodwill. I was tempted to get it. I love my 20 inch model, but it would nice to get a bigger set for N64 4 player goodness.

I have the space. It's just a pain to carry. It had S-Video and Component too.

I'm using GBI ULL + Component on a North American GCN to my PVM. Works flawlessly and there really is no input lag.

GBI LL also worked for me, but vanilla GBI seemed not to boot up.

That's a winner, man, especially with component.

Borrow a handtruck.

Probably a given, but power it on and test it with 240p Suite or something. I'd hate to haul around 100+ lbs and find out it has serious problems.

I thought all Goodwills stopped accepting TV's? At least the couple in my area have. Sucks if everyone is relegated to Craigslist to grab one.

Goodwilll trashes everything.... ESPECIALLY old TVs. I use to work in one. I saw a whole fucking pallet of PVMs and XM29s get wrecked... all because A) they don't know shit and B) Employees are not allowed to buy from their own store nor track transported items. The latter role in that case filled by me. I've seen things... traumatic things.

Folks stay giving away CRTs at yard sales tho. Just drive around your neighborhood on a Saturday morning.

To this day, I've still never been to a yard sale. Nobody near me has a yard :-/

XM29s getting trashed?

Horrifying! You should have quit on the spot and taken them all. Also here in the UK charity shop employees get first dibs at ridiculously reduced prices haha. Unfortunately PVMs are very uncommon here and XM29s are completely non-existent.

You picked a good first console to try this on. Or bad for your wallet. The Genesis is like the best system for showing off the difference between non RGB and RGB.

Not buying the highlighted part...Those are things that wouldn't end up at goodwill on a regular enough basis...

It was a single donation. I saw the truck it came off of. Large quantities of uncommon items do suddenly appear like this. I counted 3 or 4 XMs and the rest of the 6 foot or so stack consisted of PVMs. There were also some interesting Mitsubishi sets in a second stack...

Aside from that horror, I also bore witness to tons of Dreamcasts, PS2s, SNESes, going to the recycler. There was a 4'x4'x3' container of N64 boxes and manuals also recycled. Same thing with a lot of CIB Genesis games.

I tell people now, don't "donate" to Goodwill. GW ain't a charity so they ride that whole "donate" marketing for all its worth. Just ask to hand it to someone you know for free. Unless what you have to "donate" is indeed actual garbage like an old mattress or stank ass couch, then yeah go a ahead and call GW for a pick up. :)

Oh, but let me tell you what truly happens to the CRTs inside the retail operation center. They pile up... they pile up... and they pile up... not long when they are just so many that they literally just take the forklift and crush them out of the way. they get crushed, run over, and just end up being sold off for scrap anyway to people whose job is to literally demolish the TVs for scrap.

This is horrible. Thank god the Saturn & it's games were spared.

I believe it. The recycling place I got my $20 PVMs... the second time I went, the PVM pallet was completely different from the first time I went a month earlier. They send CRTs somewhere to be destroyed and raw parts salvaged or something. Last time there were like half-dozen PVM-20L1s and a 29" PVM in great condition, probably all gone and demolished by now. Before that, M series and older and a bunch of 8" PVMs.

I'm legitimately disturbed by how many late model HD BVMs/PVMs (and possibly XM29s) have possibly come through this place and got junked. I know I didn't get lucky and spot the first few pro-level CRTs to ever to come there on two random days this past summer.

Unfortunately I couldn't tell you, since I don't have the billions of dollars to shell out for component (meanwhile I've spent probably $1000 on RGB related things incl. the framemeister lol)

I'd imagine it works just fine in terms of latency, though. Even though I'm running it to a framemeister and then to an LCD, there is a noticeable reduction in input lag.

To be fair, we're the only weirdos that care about CRTs.

Sadly, they will get trashed by everyone else.

I just hope not too many see their fates that way. I still want to get a PVM eventually.

this conversation about how others view CRTs reminded me that i felt a bit awkward explaining my friend why i have a CRT in my room now (it's been months since my friends came to my house and last weeked was their first visit since i got the CRT)

i kept thing simple and just said "well, new TVs don't process old games well and that causes lag which makes games unplayable"

thankfully that was enough (my friend used to play a lot of videogames with me when we were in high school so he knows about reaction time and stuff)

about valuable stuff being trashed, just imagine the kind of valuable things that have been lost over time because someone considered it trash...

At one point had had 3 CRTs in my 800 ft apartment.... My family had a CRT intervention and I ended up giving one away.

They just don't understand.

better start saving because RGB will break you (both financially and in joy)

Soon you'll be buying RGB-modded consoles just because of dat RGB (four of my consoles are RGB modded, two I did myself and I bought my PC Engine Duo mainly because it was already modded.)

^wise words
think im up to 2 RGB modded systems, thankfully most stuff i have did it out of the box!

Or asking someone to make you one! I found out about consolized MVS and it was too intriguing for me to pass up. One more week of waiting I think.

congrats on the Duo & MVS! post back impressions, so jelly on the latter

true but a big trinotron with component? if it displays correctly, that thing's a gem. sounds similar to the one i'm sitting on currnetly.

and a 29" PVM in great condition, probably all gone and demolished by now.

...fuck

PCE
PCE Duo
Mark III (sort of, an external amplifier)

For NES RGB mod, could I still use the rca port of the side to output audio?

Thinking about getting my PC engine Duo modded first for some reason. On that note...where is the best place to buy an NESRGB board again?

I'd ask Baphomet to mod it when he got the time, so shouldn't be any issue there. Think the same could work for PC Engine Duo and its headphone port? Using it as an audio out like the Genesis 1?

I didn't realize the Duo had a headphone jack. My Duo R doesn't. What sort of AV out does it have? 5 pins?

The N64 is the main one for me to get a RGB mod as I don't want to use emulators and I can't capture gameplay from it right now(unless I get a capture card with svideo support).

fortunately it's one of the easiest ones, too. I might actually finally get around to modding mine soon. Been itching for a tech project.

Only early models allow for an easy RGB mod. I was fortunate enough to have bought one of these models a few years ago so I was able to mod it myself. If you don't have an early model you'll need to get an N64RGB board.

Oh, heh was just reading off a website selling a scart cable for the system, so assumed it was the same for the normal composite.

Headphone port:

Pardon the dust due to the flash.

Getting audio out of there will be no problem then. Since you have separate audio, getting an 8 pin port modded in could allow csync and maybe even s-video if that is not a difficult mod.

Does the BVM 20G1U do 480p and 720p? I know the 20F1U does, and I see that the G1U does 800 horizontal lines which is comparable to the BVMs and PVMs that do 31khz.

No and neither does the regular 20F1U. You got your numbers mixed up a bit. It has 800 vertical lines known as TV Lines (which make up the horizontal resolution). It has the standard 480 horizontal lines (scanlines) of a 15khz monitor that make up the vertical resolution.

15khz models (240p, 480i):
20G1 = 800 TVL and less video card inputs in the back
20F1 = 900 TVL
20E1 = 1000 TVL

HD model (480p, 720p, 1080i):
D20F1 = 900 TVL
A20F1 = latest model, similar to above but don't buy it unless it comes fully equipped. "A" series is incompatible with older accessories in favor of A-exclusive parts, such as newer video cards. The input card for RGB/analog resolutions, BKM-68X, does not come standard and it's rare and very expensive. Last one I saw sold for $400 at ebay auction. Most BVMs also use a separate control unit, BKM-10R, that's pretty cheap and easy to find. The "A" again uses a newer part (BKM-15R) that's crazy expensive and hard to find.

PVM-20L5 = I think this and the 14" version are the only HD PVMs. Good all-in-one units. No need to worry about controllers, video cards, etc. However you get less customization and some have remarked that they're visually a step below the sharpness and color of BVMs.

There are also 24" and 32" versions of the HD models with 1000TVL. I can't imagine how heavy that larger one must be.

Does the XRGB absolutely require a 8 mini adapter to use SCART cables?

SO theoretically since I have euro scart cables, I need a Euro scarto to jp 21 adapter that is then linked to a mini adpater to use on XRGB mini?

It's easy to do? That's awesome, but I have no idea about console modding so I'll be afraid to break something, lol.
