Lets rule out Terrence Boyd as a rocket scientist...

Dempsey yelled and pointed to the corner twice and Boyd was looking right at him and he cut in and shot the ball into the 57th row

Nice win for the US

good tuneup for wcq

defense still has questions. Evans was good but Chandler and Cherundolo are still first choice. CBs still have to learn a lot. Beasley looks good going forward but I still have question marks.

Altidore and Jermaine Jones were excellent.

DUDE the US beat the #2 ranked team in the world! THE WORLD!

He may have understated the victory, but you are blowing it out of proportion

This was Germany's B or C team today. Ian Darke almost lost his breath rattling off the list of regulars that weren't playing today.

Damn, I picked a shitty time to nap. Forgot about the game. :/

Glad we got the result though. Still don't know what to think of this team. So many questions and the range of good to bad fluctuates every game.

Missed the USMNT game, but came home and saw that the USWNT was playing Canada. Alex Morgan is unreal. Two goals in a span of about three minutes.

Tomodachi wa Mahou
Was a pretty good game (which is pretty refrshing), great to see Altidore finally produce I totally believe it'll continue.

Last 10 minutes was a total trainwreck though. sheesh.

Great game today. Evans looked great on defense, not so great on ball handling. Our defense was good until the last 10-20, looked like the guys that were out there were too tired and the substitutions took a while to feel their way. Overall a good game. Will see if they can win one that actually counts soon.

Since we just celebrated US Soccer's 100 year history on Sunday, I think I will tell everybody to read Dave Wangerin's Soccer in a Football World: The Story of America's Forgotten Game for a great sense of how embedded in our culture soccer truly is. Soccer in America might not be as popular as we want it to be, but it has as long and rich of a history here as it does in the "major" soccer powers.

He released another book in 2011, which I haven't read yet, but it seems to be a follow up to Soccer in a Football world.

Also, Roger Bennett and Jeff Carlisle writing for ESPN FC, lists the Top XI most influential (not necessarily best) players in US history. What do you guys think?

For the longest time, American soccer was like a tree falling in an empty forest. A secret history etched in dark corners by men whose achievements, no matter how seismic, felt doomed to obscurity. Hosting the 1994 World Cup changed that, birthing a professional league and multiplying the number of skilled American-born players capable of playing abroad.

To celebrate the United States Soccer Federation's centennial, we selected this list of the 11 Most Influential American Players of the past 100 years. These are not necessarily the "best" Americans to take the field. Advances in sports science and the onset of professionalism mean that even a Brek Shea would trump the giants of the 1920s to '80s. But they are the men who have stepped up to propel US Soccer along its exponential growth curve to its position today: America's Sport of the Future. As it has been since 1972.

In that ESPN article...I found this little beauty of a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o73qnXFP7e8

It is a great book. He died last year. :/

I'm happy to see we won. I've been busy with moving and starting a new job so I haven't been able to watch the last two games.

Gene Olaff: An American soccer treasure

The man is Hall of Fame goalkeeper, Gene Olaff, aged 92, the oldest sentient former United States international alive today. Long before Tony Meola, Kasey Keller, Tim Howard and even Brad Friedel were born, the New Jersey State Trooper flung himself fearlessly around goalmouths in the semi-professional American Soccer League in which he starred for the mighty Brooklyn Hispano team. With the U.S. Soccer Federation celebrating its centennial, I had asked the organization to introduce me to its senior veteran. As Olaff tells me his story, its narrative offers a long view on American soccer's winding road to relevance.

Great interview with the oldest living member of the USMNT team from years past.

The amusing thing is that he named his dog "Donovan" and claimed that it's the tamest dog he's ever had...lol

Why does Hercules Gomez bounce around to different teams so much in Liga MX? He's on his 5th club since going to Mexico in 2010. Was kind of sad to hear the news, ultimately I would love to see him back in MLS as a designated player but mlssoccer.com put a couple videos up last week of him touring Santos and he seemed really happy there.

Videos I mentioned below

Also Mexico beat Jamaica and leap frogged to the top of the hex. Here's how it looks now.

Team MP W D L GF GA Pts
Mexico 4 1 3 0 3 2 6
Panama 3 1 2 0 5 3 5
Costa Rica 3 1 1 1 4 3 4
USA 3 1 1 1 2 2 4
Honduras 3 1 1 1 4 5 4
Jamaica 4 0 2 2 1 4 2

Code:
Team MP W D L GF GA Pts
Mexico 4 1 3 0 3 2 6
Panama 3 1 2 0 5 3 5
Costa Rica 3 1 1 1 4 3 4
[B]USA 3 1 1 1 2 2 4 [/B]
Honduras 3 1 1 1 4 5 4
Jamaica 4 0 2 2 1 4 2

that kinda bothered me :p

Before US games, I send out an email to my friends that are casual USMNT fans, and I figured I'd just post the same thing here in case any GAFfers are interested. Apologies for any typos or misinformation. :p

==================

World Cup Qualifying is back on tonight with the US facing a tricky game against Jamaica down in Kingston. The US has never won there in a WCQ, but Jamaica is currently riddled with injuries and in desperate need of some points after two draws and two losses in their first four games.

The US is going to try and sneak away with 3 points tonight, though 1 point should be fine if they can win their next two home games coming up soon. The current table can be found here: http://espnfc.com/tables/_/league/fifa.worldq.concacaf/world-cup-qualifying---afc?cc=5901

Most people are predicting the US will stick with the same lineup as the Germany match: Howard; Evans, Gonzalez, Besler, Beasley; Bradley, Jones; Zusi, Dempsey, F Johnson; Altidore.
