Washington Post calls GameCube "obsolete", recommends PS2/Xbox for Holiday gifts...

Washington Post is Rupert Murdoch's shit rag, the Gamecube being called "obsolete" is probably a vast right-wing conspiracy :lol

Washington Post is correct.

Aside from Nintendo-based titles there are really no new games coming for the GameCube exclusively being announced and really there probably isn't going to be any.

Even loyal supporters like Capcom are jumping off the ship.

I mean of course there's a controversial slant to it, but it reminds me of how riled up people got when Next Generation magazine ran a cover story with the title "What's Wrong With The Nintendo 64?" (with the cracked glass image of Mario).

Nintendo fans were up in arms about it, but really it was just Next Generation stating the obvious -- without CD-ROM support, the N64 would struggle to get a big enough library for the next four years.

Don't cry for Nintendo though, they're no where near like Sega. They're incredibly wealthy, will probably end up being successful with animated films, and are set to make almost a $1 billion dollar yearly profit next March even with the GCN struggling.

I hope Nintendo's next console is really, really out there. Even moreso than the DS. Like totally crazy and very different from any traditional console.

IAWTP. There shouldn't be any shock now about major media citing the GC as failure. That doesn't mean that any one is "d00m3d," however.

Rupert Murdoch has nothing to do with The Washington Post, so you know.

Here's an idea:

Let's stop focusing on the image and/or impending "doom" of a console and start focusing on and enjoying the games that they deliver to us, Sales Age

The forum would cease to exist if that happened.

Oh god, this reminds me far too much of the pain Dreamcast fans had to endure...

Let go. Start saving up for either Xenon or PS3 and don't look back, it will make it a lot easier.

Nintendo has no mind share anymore, not even in Japan.

Why would they start saving for PS3/Xenon? They don't have Nintendo made games on them.

The off-topic forum survives without these arguments.

See the OT's attitude towards the right side of the political spectrum and their association of it with Nintendo. Overattribution, weeeeeeeeeee!

The OT forum is more civil though. They exorcise their demons with Nintendo here and ignore that the situation they are feeding is bad for their hobby. I think many members turn off their brain once they click on "Gaming Forum".

exorcise. although what i do on the gaming forum probably is closer to exercising my demons.

heheh. When I submitted that, I thought "oh wait, politics."

But I was too lazy to mention that.

But is this guy conscious of the PS2 and Xbox libraries? His idea seems based on the idea of big-named games as proved by monthly hardware sales.

And the very idea that EA being online for the Xbox is some giant thrill for Xboxers just shows how out of touch he is.

Many people were very happy when the EA on Live thing was announced, and EA games are doing quite well on Xbox Live this year. Out of touch? Out of touch is taking the views of people form message boards as those of the masses.

Why would I want to torture someone like that? The last thing I want in my hospital bedroom, and believe me, I'd know seeing as how it's my second home, is a worthless Nintendo console in front of me.

However, Mario Kart on the N64 provided hours of great fun during a few stays 5 or so years ago.

Original Post:

I think the greater issue at hand is that the writer used a phrase like "competitively obsolete". Call it obsolete or say that it is no longer competitive, if you like, but "competitively obsolete" is a poor mouthful of words.

... and, as my fanboy genes require, I must ask whether being in 3rd place and getting most of the same big selling multiplatform software means that a system is "out of the loop." It's definately no match for the PS2, and it's just behind the Xbox, but it's not quite as far and miserably behind as it is assumed to be. It may not catch up, though...

Funny thing is, I'll bet 90% of the people in this thread have only read the excerpt in the starter post but not the article itself. (nearly no quotes on his other comments)

My suggestion: read the whole article, it's interesting.

Bah. I feel stupid -- I misread and didn't realize that the post was an excerpt & restatement. Drat.

Carry on.

Funny, you look like a gay 12 year old. The gamecube should be perfect for you.

I work retail. There are no PS2's anymore. There are no Xboxes anymore. About 80% of the calls we get are asking, "Do you have any PS2's?" Same with the customers who come in for games. This holiday will have an effect on the upcoming year. Many of those customers want PS2's for Christmas/Hanukah presents. I can see a lot of sad children on holiday morning.

I can't understand all the Nintendo hate. So what if the library's small? It's got a higher ratio of good quality games over crap than the other systems. I love my Cube and look forward to the big titles of next year.

I dunno. I don't get it. People are ignorant. Can't do anything about it. So why try?

BTW, I really wish I had one of those Spice Cubes. Orange is teh bomb! (All my consoles are black or grey. I never noticed it, but aside from my GBA SP, I don't have any colored consoles. Mmm... Orange...

That's a pretty fucking weak list, save for Zelda and maybe RE4. Gamecube can't compete when the majority of its 'major 2005 titles' are low-brow stuff that will be overlooked.

Fire Emblem, The Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil 4, Killer 7, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Star Fox Assault, Advance Wars: Under Fire, Odama, representing the majority, are uncultured?

DK requires more intellect to manipulate than most standard games.

I can understand if you do not like the games, they are not for everyone. If you are going to troll them, then make an effort.

I'd say hop off that sinking ship ASAP. That is the absolute weakest list I have ever seen on GAF, aside from the pre-launch xbox exclusive list.

You are suggesting I sell my Gamecube based on the fact you do not like the upcoming games?

: l o l

Even tho I own a PS2 and love the games for it, I also own a Gamecube. I just find it easy for people to trounce on a system when it's down. There isnt a major Holiday title besides Metroid Prime 2 that is driving the system this year. Yet, when you look at the 2005 titles for the system, it's a completely different story.

What exactly on Xbox or PS2 will sell like the Legend of Zelda will next year? What exactly on Xbox or PS2 coming out next year has the same level of hype like GTA:SA and Halo 2 this year? PS2 titles like Final Fantasy XII and Kingdom Hearts comes to mind, but NO Xbox game that will sell millions comes to mind. So, what are you going to say next Xmas? Everyone's buying a Xbox 2 so it wasnt Microsoft's fault? :lol

"What exactly on Xbox or PS2 will sell like the Legend of Zelda will next year?"

GT4 is going to demolish everything in sales next year.

As if :lol. That's a PS2 title as well. Where's the big multimillion selling Xbox games?

Are you sure? I think all the delays have turned some people off, not to mention the lack of online play...

So you think Zelda's actually going to outsell GT4? GT3 is still the best selling overall game this generation and the previous Zelda isn't anywhere near it in sales.

"I think all the delays have turned some people off, not to mention the lack of online play..."

Lack of online play isn't going to hurt it at all. It hasn't had it up until now and it's still sold tons.

No, I just said that GT4 isnt going to demolish EVERYTHING in sales next year. That would mean outselling everything else on PS2 as well. Nada :lol. I'm confident that Zelda on GCN will sell millions, but outselling ALL of PS2's biggest titles is a far stretch.

Besides, Halo 2 seems to be giving GTA:SA a run for its money and Halo 2 and Zelda are on the same level of hype for both of their respective systems so sales should be close. Also, console base numbers are just about the same.

Insertia said:

That's called a system. If Xbox 2 doesnt get off to a multimillion system selling spree, then something is definitely wrong. :lol. We're talking games here.....

Agree. Since GC lineup is appearantly weak. Where is the impressive xbox list? Not including 3rd parties.
