What is the final consensus on GTAIV?

Well said. I always find myself nodding in agreement with your GTA/open-world posts, dreamfall =D

I remember lurking on GAF for a bit and feeling compelled to join looking at some of your views on Rockstar titles! Much respect regarding your posts about the game- identifying Euphoria is probably the most important part of it for me!

Nailed it, pretty much my views too.
....
Not even mentioning the MP.

Playing on the PC with mods is just on a different level.

And that's what is so crazy- the multiplayer Free roam was sublime. Some of the co-operative missions got harder to complete, and the character creation system was definitely lacking but it really was impressive regarding different modes and game types. I really am wondering how GTA V will incorporate it.

Those gifs, soooo gooood!

It was a decent game. Frame rate was a bit wonky, the shooting aspect wasn't well executed, and no mid-mission check points was very frustrating.

Driving was great, the city was good, and those physics were fantastic!

Who dug into the internet?

It's hit or miss for me but the depth is absurd.

The rival news reporting on various events is the best thing.

I always blamed Euphoria for one of the reasons I didn't like GTA4. Play another 3rd person game, then go into GTA4 and you feel so sluggish on foot. The control seem to be effected by this Euphoria.

Because of this thread I launched GTA4 again to make sure that the controls was as annoying to me as I remembered. Looking for a car I would consider driving (sports car, I wonder if there's a better handling mod out). During this time I walked more than I ran, not because I wanted to take in the atmosphere but because I could turn sharper if I walked. I had more control when I walked because running + Euphoria (I guess) cause another force to be added to my control of the character. Wider turns, bumping into cars, maybe being bumped by them. And walking is so slow. The character has the agility of a elephant.

That was pretty great. Integrity 2.0 was fairly disappointing by Lazlow's standards in past games, but the two hyper-political stations were funny I think.

I think Euphoria makes the combat better than many other third-person shooters because there are actual hit reactions from enemies (which has gotten better and better in Red Dead and then Max Payne 3 respectively). The on-foot controls felt fine to me on release, but going back and playing it recently I'll say....yeah, they're not great. They feel sluggish and not precise. The cover system suffers also since Niko is slow getting in and out of it. I disagree with most complaints about IV, but the on-foot controls being lacking is one I can't argue with.

But just like enemy reactions in combat, movement controls with Euphoria are also much better in Rockstar's recent games. Overall, the negatives stemming from Euphoria that were present in IV six years ago are mostly gone. In my opinion it adds a lot to their games at this point.

edit: recent improvements to Euphoria are not all that relevant to a discussion about GTA IV specifically, but just throwing it out there since I think Euphoria is a pretty neat system.

As far as the internet stuff goes, I hope they do less of it but of greater quality in V.

Integrity 2.0 was awesome, imo, but I thought it was too short. My only gripe about the talk radio in IV. Good stuff but not enough of it.
It was funny to see a lot of bits from his podcast make it into the game in some capacity.

I'm playing through it with a first person mod right now. Nothing immerses you in the city like roaming around it at eye level, seeing the pedestrians face to face, actually making out what some of the tiny writing says like the beer taps, etc.

Nice.

That was frustrating in IV. I wanted to see the city but it was hard to get up close and snoop around. Needed a SLR camera feature or something.

The FPV in IV is pretty annoying. I would have preferred a in-the-car style dash cam rather than whatever weird thing they did.

Far from a bad game, but I can't say I was a big fan. It's on the long list of Open World Games I Didn't Bother To Beat. Partially due to the tone, story and general dullness of the experience.

Nailed it, pretty much my views too.

My mate got IV before and playing it at his house ( was playing SA before hand/ ps2 games still) I was in awe at the jump of graphics and things like animations. Went and got it as quick as I could and have since loved it.

Just cruising around the city in IV is one of the great things about it that is not possible in other games ( crappy physics that make cruising impossible, bad radios, I mean if you think IV has bad radios then I wonder what there views are on other games...)

Not even mentioning the MP.

Oh and

where do these dancing mods come from ? lol

where do these dancing mods come from ? lol

Mainly just scripts/ one with the trainer I think lol.

Also the cars were hard to turn sharply... if you accelerated when you tried to turn or were going to fast, you know like what happens if you do the same in RL. If you keep the speed low and don't touch the gas trigger and turn ( maybe hitting it slowly or pressing it down like 10%, to get a little speed) you will be fine. The turning angles were not as good as they could be though and one of the few things I hope they fix in V for the driving.

There are many car handling mods for IV, I tend to stay away from them as I love racing online and dislike the advance of these new handling lines ( that also increase things like top speed and acceleration, basically cheating ).

Nothing better than seeing some noob have the car handling mods enabled, going very fast down a straight road and crashing at pretty much every corner and coming last, so fun.

Controlling NIKO was a pain no doubt but something that has since been fixed ( so now we have the incredible euphoria software that has the realistic hit detection were you actually feel like you shot someone or hit someone with a car without the slow gameplay, look at MP3 basically). That is what separates MP3 to other shooters to me and make it a lot better.

i spend a lot of time trying to find secret in it.
I found quite some hidden pages.
But i wonder if there is a collection of link with all of them.

The conspiracy theories and the fake us news were awesome.

The best part EVER for me was going onto that beauty pageant website ( of young girls, pedo style) and doing so results in the website closing with a message about the cops are coming and BOOOM, you get like a 5 star wanted level lol, so epic.

Overrated IMO. On foot controls are horrible, clunky garbage, soundtrack was lacklustre at best, checkpointing was HIDEOUS, and as well realised as Liberty City is, theres not much to do in it. Expect go bowling and play darts, obv. And the story is c-tier straight to DVD quality crap. "Im trying to escape my life of crime and violence...by turning to a life of crime and violence, but in a different place". Bravo.

Great game. Only if you skip all the cutscenes. It'm certain GTA games are written by 13 year olds.

"I'll fucking kill you. Nobody fucks with my family!"

I've seen better writing in film school projects.

Pretty average missions.....but free mode makes up for that. The city they created is one of this gens best achievements.

To me its one of the highlights of the gen. It can be really frustrating, but like I've said, free mode was GOD TIER! 9/10.

What about the car collection for brucie? Assassination missions? shooting the birds? the friend missions you find randomly around the city? races through Brucie? taxi from Roman, delivery from Little jacob?

Fact is there was a lot of stuff to do, just many did not know how to access it ( through the phone or internet).

Easily the worst game I've played all generation. GTA4 was an unbelievable piece of shit in every way... didn't understand any of the reviews, both from the press or from players who loved it. I will literally never play another Grand Theft Auto game over how bad 4 was... it completely killed any interest whatsoever I had for the franchise.

I'm half way through my second time playing this, i might finish it this time (never did before)
but i just remembered now why i sold this 5 years ago and haven't played it since then.

There is nothing to do with your money, why are niko so obsessed with money when he has nothing to do with them? The few activities are dull and shallow, you can't buy apartments, no cars, there is no feeling of accomplishment or progress whatsoever, even though you have $50 000 on you bank account, you still live in a shitty apartment. Can't change haircut, no mission checkpoints, barely any outfits. And no gambling...wtf?

The missions are good in the first half of the game, after a while they just get repetitive just like the old gta games.

Red dead redemption is a 100x better.....to bad no pc version =(

The good parts: City is alive, nice game-engine, cars, and at least some of the characters ingame are pretty cool.

I've been sitting in class (finally got OUT!), just wondering how I'd respond to this.

For me, it is simple. Euphoria & the RAGE system has spoiled me, to the point where I can't go back to other open worlds. I love GTA IV; it has it's fair share of problems, but I like it's presentation and the real character is Liberty City. There are places in Broker that resemble Brooklyn in some uncanny ways- when I finally moved to NYC, I kept thinking on my digital memory from this game.

There's nothing that beats driving around in GTA, and listening to Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free" in a drop top, before stopping by Playboy's rooftop to catch the sun rising. Little touches like that, really blow my mind. I'm a simple gamer- I can get lost for hours in the incredible detail they've designed the city with. I love the weight of everything- I know I can immediately go back to driving in this game, and it feels both challenging and rewarding. I love how NPCs react to gun fire in different places of their bodies, and how everything feels like it has momentum. I love the little touches of snarky humor and misanthropic radio commercials; and I love base jumping to catch an aerial perspective of Algonquin before landing in the ocean.

Many will count the game's narrative as a failure- I'm with the camp that enjoyed it, minus the decision making. I wanted more scripted execution animations, but I loved the diversity and cohesion of the characters. I wish GTA would stop stumbling into Italian Gang warfare, but it seemed appropriate. I loved, loved early missions running with Badman to get packages. Every character who interacted with Niko felt different- Florian's flamboyant and flippant attitude as an ex-gangster provided some relief in such a gritty backdrop. And the Episodes were pretty astounding- Ballad added so much creative weaponry, it remains my favorite iteration of GTA next to Vice City.

I think it's also the first impressions of the game that have stuck with me the most. I just remember being kind of awe-struck at the lighting, and how everything felt so vibrant. Shifting weight while taking cover, using manual targeting to pull off headshots in hectic firefights, etc. I loved every moment of it, and I still go back an play it at least an hour or two every couple of days; just to wander.

I think the city was so well crafted that even though I loved SR2 & 3, the cities felt so blah. There wasn't much visual flair, and everything was predicated on being more "EXTREEEEME" that it lost something. I don't even make that comparison much- just because Rockstar really refined the environment, so much more so than the bland design of Steelport or the awesome expanse of Just Cause 2.

So give me V. It'll be a swansong to close this generation for me, and a game I'll play for ages.

The Housers always have intrigued me like no other. And Benzies and Barrera always bring it!

Are we related?

Great post. It is a common complaint and one that seems like it comes from people who just gave up/didn't even give it a chance.

Played BOGT a little the other day, and I just can't get past the awful gunplay and tank movement. It's still fun, but the gameplay mechanics keep it from being a good game.

Some of the most fun I've had in MP this generation.

Play with some good friends and the wackiness is over the top.

Being able to use the ragdoll physics to prevent a person from ever standing up.. magnificent.

SP was fun, didn't finish it, but all in all it was a GTA game.. I don't look back on it as fondly as I do Vice City but still a worthy romp.

I enjoyed it. Though it didn't reach the heights of Vice City and San Andreas for me, it was still a fun ride. My biggest gripe is that the last fourth of the main campaign dragged a bit. But the final mission was incredible, especially if you
let Roman die
.

Game gets a B+ from me.

All those are basically just jobs, in return, you get money. And you need money for????

Hahaha, "faux" backlash? Um, HELLO? Why can't people sincerely just dislike this vacuous excuse for a game? I won't even be as gracious as others who attribute their disappointment to it not living up to the GTA-lineage. Simply on its own merits, I think it sucks. Never finished after 3 attempts. Don't care what its technical feats were at the time, a game must first be fun. Everything else comes afterward.

I disagree, there are plenty of reasons why I do not buy games, and many of them have shit to do with fun. If fun was such an objective thing then I would be play skyrm right now.

I would argue that the most important thing in a game is theme. You can have a good theme and have people praise your ok gameplay to levels to which it does not deserve.

But if you have a good game and terrible theme, no one will even want to go around it.

Not saying there don't work regardless of theme. And game play is quite important, but your games image is very important.

GTA has never been that over-the-top. Not even close. Saints Row is goofy and like an adult swim version of gaming. GTA has always had a bit of a gritty feel to even the most goofy side stuff.

I meant fun and variety rather than the over-the-top stuff. I'm not sure I'd call the series gritty though (particularly the early games). If anything I've always found them kind of humorous really.

Tried to install GTAIV on Windows 8 from steam for the better part of an hour... No luck. The thing wouldn't boot at all. It'd bring up the Rockstar Social Club, I'd enter my login details, and then the game just wouldn't boot. Sometimes I'd get an error.

What gives here, is this common?

I just realized this is the only game this gen I triple dipped on. Finished the game on PS3, 360 and PC.

As dreamfall mentioned, some of the most emergent and memorable gaming experiences I've ever had. Driving at maniac speeds across the Algonquin Bridge at night in the rain, slick roads, wind blowing the rain hard, weaving in and out of traffic, bullets flying, explosions rocking cars in front and behind, all while Steve Mariotts 'Cocaine' is wailing away on the radio. Aside from my time with Portal 2, that's the highlight of this gen to me.

Yep; many moments I can recall from my 2 playthroughs like this that stick with me more than any other game I have ever played.

I loved it, specially TBoGT, but I miss the jobs as a taxi driver and ambulance guy and all the madness that you could do in San Andreas. I'm expecting those things that I missed to be in GTA V.

At the end of the game you have like 4 houses, numerous cars and other stuff.
Fellign rich endgame when you started with 0$ is something normal for me.
I mean i broke into a bank and escaped !

This is no different from other Open world games with money as a currency.
In those games you can buy everything and still have money left.
So what do you do when you've bought every weapon, bought all the clothes, got enough cars... then you just play.

I listen to radio broker all the time...it was a fun radio.. but you're right at night the game was even better.

So maybe the press response when the game came out was some hyperbole. But I'm of the opinion that in the future, when people are studying art and culture of the distant past and they are tasked with identifying that periods' master works, Grand Theft Auto IV will be there. In my opinion, it's not just a satire of American, 21st century culture, it's a satire and reflection of games of this period in video game history. This generations GTAIII.

While I feel that mission variety was lacking and checkpoints could have been used, the friends were overzealous and needy, the last quarter of the story was long-winded, and there could have been more post game stuff to do, I still feel that the game is incredible as a whole.

I feel that while people do have valid complaints about the game, I also feel that the game gets some serious unjust hatred and that I guess I just appreciate different things in my games...

The only game from 2008 I still play on a regular basis and the only game of this last generation that I bought multiple times besides Half-Life 2.

The difference between GTA IV and all those other open world game is that after you done the SP, side missions, jobs etc...

YOU CAN PLAY online, which is very well done in IV imo and tripped the life of the game.

From races, freeroam ,co op missions or cops and crooks, a lot of variety and fun.

While many people still play GTAIV online, I think a lot of people overlooked/dismissed it and is sort of under appreciated. I expect great things for GTAV in the realm of multiplayer, and I'm very interested to see how Rockstar's crew system is integrated and used.

I have sky high expectations for GTA V's multiplayer. No open world game has matched GTA IV's online and GTA V should blow it out of the water; I am beyond pumped for V.

GTAIV was horrible to me:
  • Shit handling of cars, leading you to crash and flip and shit when you only meant to corner or chase a target.
  • Absolutely horrible on foot controls, character felt awkward as hell to move.
  • Focus on realism was annoying too - walking up and downstairs, etc.
  • NO CHECKPOINTS - this was the dealbreaker for me. The aiming is, in GTA fashion, horrible. As such, many deaths occurred. Also, driving from half way across a city just to die is some bullshit, and some of the missions are way to freaking long to not have checkpoints.
There was a lot wrong with IV, most of which was fixed with the DLC and RDR. I hope GTAV takes more from RDR than IV.

Bullshit from PC perspective. Thanks to patch 1.0.7
