Where did all the fake hate for Herman Hulst come from?

I was born & raised in Tokyo Japan

Gaffers hate horizon so hating helmet was the next natural step.
But the dude is also the one behind concord and some other questionable choices so it's not all fluff.

It's not jimbo level of bad but not that far away.

No one even knows who Herman is outside of these circles. It's all blown out of proportion.

Also people saying Sony doesn't bet on new IPs the same year Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin released (paid by Sony even if developed by outside studios) is...something. Even something like Helldivers 2 is a totally different genre from the first game.

We also know Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, Sony Bend, Insomniac (sort of), Bluepoint, Housemarque, Haven (ew), Media Molecule, etc are working on new IPs to be released on PS5. We just need to wait longer.

I need to remind you that PS4 only really hit its stride of great 1st party games once Uncharted 4 released in 2016...even though the PS4 released in 2013. Now development cycles even longer it's only fair that those games will take even longer to come out.

If you think about it, it makes sense. These $100M/$200M will all be released once PS5 has already sold like 80M units. Sony won't want these huge productions to be released on a console with 10M units out there. This ain't PS2 anymore.

He's a big fan of DEI and gaas which got cancelled alot so I dont know how he still has a job. The wasted so much ressources and money from sony

Stellar Blade was being supported by Sony before Hulst became PS Studios head.
No, it wasn't. Shift Up was literally looking for funding until early 2021 or so, which is around the time the Japan Studio restructuring happened and Sony started to produce Korean and Chinese games.
Astro Bot, Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima are franchises that started and were stablished before he was in charge of anything.
Yes, so what? Do we only judge his work specifically based on new IPs?
Death Stranding uses Decima Engine, but that doesn't mean he green lit the project.
The sequel was, and Physint as well.
The facts are that as PS Studios head, he didn't do anything worthy. No relevant new IPs
You're setting this up to age poorly anytime soon.
and just push of GaaS.
Which brought us a total of only two new IPs if that's where you want to go. Clearly the Helldivers and Horizon projects don't count because those franchises were previously established!
People saying it was Jim Ryan who made the call might be right, but he was still part of that administration.
Sure, but there's a lot of layers going on there before he could have any say. And in defense of Jim Ryan, Sony Group was definitely pressuring him to bring more profitability into the business.
Also, he is only focused on Horizon. He wants to run that franchise to the ground as if it was Ubisoft with Assassin's Creed.
Not in the same ballpark, at all.
See, this is why it's so hard to discuss this with you people.

It's not fake? He's useless and all he wants to do is push GaaS as well as Horizon which in my opinion is one of the more boring IPs they have in their collection.

What a dumb ass take. The "hate" comes from people who are actually invested the console not from "the losing side". How much you want to bet that 90% of who you perceived as "haters" own a PS5? It's always the same with you fanboys, any criticism is always taken as coming from the other "side", because you see everything through the lens of console wars. Having passion, being invested in something is what leads to the anger you're seeing being levied towards people like Hulst. You're not going to get that anger from an Xbox fanboy. Think about it. Use logic for a change.
Psshh don't call me dumb cuz I'm able to see patterns and identify social engineering tactics.

Besides forcing Horizon down everyone's throats, I'm not sure why there is so much hate for him either.

Funnily enough, I bet if we was Japanese nobody would care one bit. It's not like he greenlit Concord or anything, it was in development hell for years before he was made CEO.

I saw Hermen Hulst at a grocery store in Amsterdam yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

That was good, thanks for the laugh. :messenger_grinning_squinting:

Where are all of the high quality video games he was hired to produce?

How has he managed the reputation of the Sony brand?

What is the outlook for Sony over the next five years?

I really hope it does. Many people have been very disappointed this generation when it comes to PlayStation first party.

That have released! There are many cancelled games, and to many that represents time and money lost that could’ve gone to single player games, which is what most of the people want (at least from PlayStation).

Maybe, or maybe not, perhaps all that additional budget would have been allocated to other segments of the company rather than game development? No way to know, really.
But I don't understand the sentiment that Sony has abandoned SP games when even this year, they published far more SP projects than GAAS ones.
Compare Helldivers 2, Destiny 2: The Final Shape and Concord vs. Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Astro Bot, Until Dawn and LEGO Horizon Adventures. I literally included a DLC expansion within the GAAS list, and yet it still was less than that of the SP titles.

Also, I believe people don't realize that the GAAS initiative started before Hermen Hulst became head of WWS; it was at some point in mid 2019 when Shuhei Yoshida and Shawn Layden were still heads of the division.
Plus, the decision to port games to PC was made around this time as well.

All this hate for Hermen is because of this one guy.

Ass of Can Whooping Ass of Can Whooping

One more exclusive either going 3rd party via a licensed kids game or a studio getting their IP back after a 5 year exclusivity period, he's going to personally invade The Netherlands and nuke Guerilla Games' entire landmass circumference.
Still better ending than Killzone 3. That was his thing too, btw. F*ck you, Hulst.

How so? I thought it was already in development whilst he was still at Guerrilla Games working on Horizon. He only got appointed this year didn't he?

The problem is people falling in the trap of scapegoating one man. Just like with Don mattrick. You really think they are the ones that make all the decisions? It's the higher ups who's names you don't know and faces you don't see that make the real decisions.

Why is OP so concerned about what people think about some CEO dude?
This isn't about the CEO it's more about the people saying his name over & over again lately.

Seems like people are being programmed to repeat certain stuff , just like how PlayStation is being put against PC now. None of this stuff seems genuine

He used to run the studio that made the world's most boring games, and now he's an executive at PlayStation during the most boring PlayStation generation. On top of that, he has an overly serious, cold image. Rather than partnering with him and getting rich, I'd sink the company with Phil.

No he was responsible for first party games for years at this point. He brought Firewalk in. It was his baby.
