Thank the Taru Jesus. That means the Dreamcast didn't fail, after all.Jonas said:I wouldn't call any console a failure until they stop making games for it.

Well, think of threads like this as an enema for GAF. It lets bish and Dragona flush out some of the more harmful turds.rs7k said:I think we've covered all the bases in 24 pages. I think the mods get a kick out of this. It's like practice for NPD.

SEGA
YOU CAN RELEASE YOUR NEXT SYSTEM NOW
TURNS OUT THE DREAMCAST WAS A SUCCESS
Yeah, I think there's still one yet to come. If not, then the last one was what...February? March? If you're using any sort of software support as the metric, it's hard to prove any system a failure.Jonas said:So your saying they still make dreamcast games?

belvedere said:So the PS3 has failed based on your findings from this book released just months after the PS3's release, yet you insinuate that the Dreamcast, which still has a single game to be released, isn't a failure?
If this is true, what is the PS3 to you, having hundreds of titles yet to be released?
Probably the most contradictory statement of all time.

He was simply showing the ridiculousness of the an earlier posters statement. Man, you people are really grasping.
Ultimately, it's a complicated question, and given the limited information we are privy to, we can only try to compare vs competition and compare vs presumed expectations. Obviously, Sony has some clever people working for them who will ensure the PS3 turns a profit, so I don't think we can say it will be a failure in that regard any more than the Gamecube and N64 were.Jonas said:Ok so Dreamcast has limited game releases in Japan. I was unaware of that (that's actually kind of cool). Anyway, I just think it's a bit early to call it a failure. Worldwide the units are selling well as far as I knew.
Comparing Ps3 to Dreamcast may be a bit over the top in my opinion. If software support isn't a good metric, then what is? Dreamcast was a failure, but Ps3 is far from being in that same column.

You might want to borrow one of Segata's thesauri or dictionaries and look up "sarcasm."belvedere said:So the PS3 has failed based on your findings from this book released just months after the PS3's release, yet you insinuate that the Dreamcast, which still has a single game to be released, isn't a failure?

mepaco said:I think this is easy. Lets just look at history to determine your attitude. Based on what we have seen so far, you have three choices:
1) If you think that the Gamecube was a failure and the PS3 is a failure then you judge failure by expectations, market position, and support.
2) If you think that the Gamecube was a success and the PS3 is a success then you consider making a profit to be a success (which I think the PS3 eventually will be profitable).
3) If you think one was a failure and the other a success, then you are a fanboy.

PS3's future definitely looks brighter, but in sales terms these first months have been pretty similar. Though 9 months in the US DC is a bit ahead, since it wasn't so supply constrained by an attempted worldwide launch.Jonas said:Comparing Ps3 to Dreamcast may be a bit over the top in my opinion. That said, the Playstation 3 is in third place, with no obvious sign of catching up to either of its competitors anytime soon. It's also performing poorly in terms of hardware sales when compared to other recent systems. Another issue is software sales - they aren't competing here, either. And unfortunately this all gets painted with an extra coat of sheen just by being the follow-up to the most successful system of all-time.
Did Sony plan to be in third place? Did they plan to have their software sales on multiplatform titles dwarfed by the 360? I can't imagine that they did. The PS3 is at best a disappointment from a marketshare standpoint, but I don't think it's reaching to call it a failure, either.

There's obviously nothing wrong with taking someone's comments completely out of context, so why shouldn't that apply to anyone else?

It's entirely possible, but their competition isn't going to be standing still, either.Jonas said:So with that said, I would say a big determining factor would be software exclusives. Not timed exclusives, but tride and true exclusives that would turn around sales. Wouldn't you agree? As far as the hardware sales go I'm curious to see the exact number. I also think this holiday season will foreshadow the rest of 08 too.
Yes, it's very good when paired with select pork products.Jocchan said:Pineapple... on pizza? Are you guys serious? :|

mepaco said:Those are not extremes. The only thing missing is the case in which the PS3 rockets up to PS2 level dominance. If they are not in first, receiving the majority of 3rd party support, then they did not meet expectations and have lost market share (ala Gamecube, though maybe not to that extent).
DemDereNads said:You are throwing the terms success & failure around with no middle ground.
Gamecube made Nintendo Money
XBox got Microsoft into the Video Game Industry
PS3 will most likely end up making Sony money, as well as helping in the format war, and anyway you look at it, 8 months is way too soon to start calling things success or failure.
