Looks good.

Thought it really tempts me to make a "Why Real Life > WoW" reply, with some pics of nature, people for different places of the world, women, party, sports... what about some skying, diving, and gliding? :)

Now if only I could unglue myself from internet messageboards and stuff...

Nothing spectacular about either game, graphics-wise if you ask me. Looks like Star Wars Galaxies owns them both in the graphics department..

I suppose that's your opinion, but really, SWG looked like shit, IMO. WoW feels great and alive, unlike the almost Lincoln Log-component look and sterile feel of SWG. Never spent more than a few minutes with DAoC, but it's also an old-ass game...and probably more attractive than SWG, for my money. WoW is definitely fun shit and a big part of that is the overall sense of visual cohesion...something that I've not really seen done half as well in any MMO.

The last shot is from the Deeprun Tram correct?

They need to add a bit more to make it not seem so boring. Of course it's a damn subway for crying outloud but it's a FANTASY SUBWAY, it can be interesting can't it?

I heavily debated between joining DAoC or WoW but when my friends and I played the Open Beta, ALL OF THEM CHOSE WOW. So I'm screwed, no DAoC for me. I don't mind really but it shows the power of the herd, anyways I'd much rather play in a clan with a bunch of my IRL and online friends instead of a bunch of people who've I never even met.

Wow! Awesome water. Nice low poly! What videocard are you using. Id hope to god Someone let blizzard in on the reflective water secret.

Odin's pissed, check out the spear. HA!

they are both very different games.

ps there really shud be a wow vs daoc thread so much posts (mostly maf) all over the place

Grphic for a Online RPG is not as important as offline games. Consider you are going to spend a portion of your life in it, you will get sick of the graph regardless of the quality. What really makes WOW shine is the game play element.

Wow doesnt offer anything new, it just offers everything from before at light speed. Sure goals rock, but what happened to the journey.

People are already freaking level 40? What then? PvE will only last so long, and PvP sounds broken in fundamental parts.

I have a level 12 Night Elf rogue and I'm still in Taldrassis, and I'm amazed at how great the lush forest scenery looks. I know this game is low poly but this is the first game I can seriously say I have been impressed by its artistic integrity. The whole town of Dasmassus looks amazing, and the shrine with the flowing water inside the Holy Temple in Dasmassus is a thing of beauty to look at. How do I take pics again and what webspace can I host them on for free?

Cool, I'm going to attempt to take some pics when I get home later.

I'm surprised you dislike WoW as much as you seem to dislike it MAF. The game plays like Diablo II but now you are in a MMORPG setting.

PvP is not broken, the players are broken.

You have tanks who want to deal big damage (and don't know how to crowd control but that is PvE), nobody wants the Warlocks to be able to keep people at a distance, and everybody thinks that PvP should be tweaked for 1on1 combat instead of group.

Now by everyone above I mean the idiots of course.

The only two things about PvP lacking right now are the lack of battlefields and the lack of penalty for ganking low levels. battlefields will be put in with the first content patch supposedly, and the ganking... well.. who knows.

but really that is a small part. PvP isn't perfect, but it is hardly fundamentally borken.

Yeah but I have Diablo II and I dont like 99% WoW players and my schedule is took fucked up to hook up with GA people, but I dislike 80% of them.

Plus PvP is borked since it appeases the griefers. Thanks BLizassholes. That is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL. Why? Blizzard said they wouldnt do much about griefing because essentially most of their player base likes it. Thats right kids. Blizzard isnt tweaking for the games benefit, but the majorities. Its like living in BUSHAMERICA all over again. Fuck U blizzard.

well, one thing I didn't touch on above is that ganking is difficult for the true low levels. It is also possible to do a lot of mid-level questing in friendly areas again making it impossible, and of course instancing which make it impossible as well....

and of course you can always play on PvE in which ganking is pretty much impossible.

WoW was developed for the endgame

Well, I am on a PvP server right now, and I am a bit scared to leave the island of Taldrassis because it is a safe haven apart from the main continent. I'm trying to do all the missions I can and make my character as strong as I can before moving off this island. I've read about the PvP problems of high level characters smacking around low level characters so I want to be as prepared as possible.

Couple things I like about WoW:

1) You get experience for completing missions. This way you don't have to sit around leveling up all day

2) There isn't a huge penalty if you die. Just need to get your spirit back to your dead body which usually isn't too far away. If you must you can always have a spirit healer revive you at your town portal for a small penalty.

I shouldnt have to WORRY about ganking when im fucking level 30 soloing around.

DAoC is VERY controlled. They offer excellent RvR and PvP as seperate entities and guess what, im not left out in the cold.

Until blizzard rethinks their strategy count me the fuck out.

Man, I'm new to the whole MMO thing and I have no idea what all these terms mean. Is there an online dictionary somewhere? What is "ganking" and "griefing"?

Actually, I find that both games suck... at least compared to Ultima Online...

DAOC = level grind

WOW = level grind

*yawn*

griefing = continually harrassing a player, usually through game mechanics (constantly killing, kill stealing, etc)

ganking = attacking a player of such a lower level that you can't possibly lose. you are 40th level.. attacking a 20th level PC would be ganking.

Are there any better pics of DoAC? The dungeon pic I see looks pretty boring. Like something I would see out of Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance. Any outside pics?

You really should try actually playing the game before talking about it.

how does DAOC stop low level ganking?

on norm servers each side cannot enter eachothers lands (beyong the gate houses) outside of them is where all the fighting goes on.

On PVP its a free for all

Ah, thanks for the info!

umm.. ok, then MAF is talking through his ass...

On WoW it works like this:

PvE
On a PvE server your PvP flag will only be turned on if you do something that turns it on. This includes attacking an aligned NPC in an enemy or neutral zone, assisting a PvP flagged ally, or manually turning it on with /pvp. It is impossible for you to be engaged by an enemy PC without you taking action to enable PvP first.

PvP
In Friendly territories, the rules are the same as above. You have to explicitly turn on PvP to be able to be attacked by an enemy PC.

In Neutral (called contested on PvP servers) and Enemy lands, it is free for all.

So from what it sounds like, WoW has even more control over PvP than DAOC. There is ganking of lowbies, but that is what playing PvP is about. If you don't like that, play PvE. There are still town raids on PvE servers, and other ways to participate in PvP without having to worry about being killed by someone 20 levels above you. And if you want nearly ffa, that option is there also with PvP servers.

I'll start to worry if these complaints about WoW still have merit in a years time. The game is only 3 weeks old, I'm just glad to be playing in this new world for the time being.

I still don't understand why you passed on the open beta, MAF? You're missing out. Stop going by what you're reading on the internet and try the game yourself.

I just hit 36 after playing for about 8-10 hours every day for 3 weeks. It's been a HELL of a journey, for me and all my friends. How long do you want the game to be? I'm already excited to start a new character.

How do you know the game doesn't offer anything new? And even if it doesn't, guess what it does offer... fun. It's freaking fun as all hell. What else do you need?

PvP is a blast in the game and not a gankfest. On normal servers it is 100% consensual (unless you attack an opposing-faction guard, but the only reason you'd do that really is to initate a throw-down). PvP is ALSO not even near fully implemented, and should be soon (battlegrounds and rewards coming). The game has only been out 3 weeks.

Don't bother convincing him anymore. It's a waste of time. We're all Bnet kiddies anyways, so why would he listen to us.

I cannot go back to DAoC. Cannot. I tried after the first stress test back in Sept. and tried again most recently. It's flat out not fun compared to WoW. The leveling speeds are actually comparable to DAoC's, except for the fact that any feeling of grind is removed.

I think the real problem is, he's reading about the game FROM the real Bnet kiddies on the official forums. I really hope everyone knows that anything you read there should be taken with a grain of salt.

MAF, if you don't have a desire to play WoW... that's cool! We don't really care. But quit telling us how our game supposedly is and what it's grand flaws are until you've put some time into it yourself. =P

Well if that's the case, I can't blame him for feeling that way about WoW.

That forum is the sewer of the internet. If I read VNBoards for DAoC, I would've never tried that game either. :lol

I'm playing on the Burning Legion server, and it isn't too populated. Enough people to quest with but not too many so you don't have to wait around to grab specific items from enemies.

One thing I find interesting is how the game is setup. I'm not big into MMORPG games, but I'm looking at starting another game with an undead character on another server to go along with my night elf character. With the vast amount of quests on each side (Horde & Alliance) it is almost like two games in one.

more like 2.5 games.. remember that each class has their own quests as well as each race, besides just the faction quests. they aren't a ton of specific quests but they definitely add to things.

anyway, here are my recent screens (from Sishir Canyon right after killing Besseleth the Spider Queen). Needless to say, there are TONS of spiders.

Thanks for the in depth pvp daoc response mrping :p

This is how DAoC PvP works.

There is Realm vs Realms. Thats for anyone. It is a completely seperate continent that is fought over in a persistant universe. Full of keeps that can be owned by the guilds and realms that conquer them.

Then there's Battlegrounds. These are where lower levels begin learning how to PvP very early on. Battlegrounds are seperated by level ranges, so you never get completely outmatched by other players. My non specced druid did very fine in battlegrounds. This is where you learn how to Realm vs Realm. Again, seperate of the giant PvE sections of the game.

In realm vs realm its free for all, but PvP content outside of realm vs realm(battlegrounds) that is offered gives players a chance to earn realm points below level 40, which is ideal towards earning realm skill points. Realm skill points are used for realm specific abilities.

Additionally owning the most outposts in DAoC gives your realm control of Darkness falls, a dungeon exclusive to the realm owning the most outposts at any given time. This is PvE, but the experience possibilities and shops inside this dungeon make it a worthwhile venture.

There is a WHOLE lot of control in DAoC PvP which offers the chance for players like me and players who want pvp constantly to get along.

Listen. If I had warcraft and bitched about it while playing it I would be told to just stop playing it or stop bitching. So guess what, im not playing it. Chances are however you will not convince me that WoW PVP is awesome, because its not. Battle.net forums, where blizzard employees post the company attitude towards PvP back up the idea that they dont give a shit about griefers causse most of their players grief. Thats fine. Ditch the GOOD honor system idea.

Balancing for the players, not the game. Great way to go :p

damn, that game looks beautiful, and it doesnt seem to have the parts i didnt like in FFxi.

I really really want to play this, but i must resist tempation. I really did not like that my gpa suffered a bit because FFxi took up way to much time, and WoW seems even more addicting than FFxi. Well here is hoping i make the smart decesion :lol

the other night I sat on the docks in auberdine for a good half-hour, staring up at the moon and watching some dude fish. I'm lovin' the art in this game.

I see some people curious in DAOC.

I would just like to say like some of you a while ago I too purchased this game. This was maybe a few months after the game came out. I never played a MMORPG before it (Diablo 2 is not part of that genre).

It was a bit fun for it's time but only for a short while. The game brutally gets very old. You do not encounter anything out of the realm of ordinary. The entire world of DAOC just feels incredibly empty. There really isn't anything to do. A few dungeon type areas here and there with nothing special inside. Weapons are very ordinary. Combat is pretty boring at times. It just feels like it is missing a lot. I urge any of you considering DAOC over WoW please do not bother. I haven't played WoW but from all accounts that I have read it seems to be miles beyond what DAOC could ever hope to be.

Leveling in DAOC is also very tedious. You spend hours upon hours fighting the same types of enemies who rarely do anything besides regular attacks. There just isn't much to the gameplay or the world of DAOC.

DAOC left a very bad taste in my mouth. Being the first MMORPG I played it felt very fun... first week. As the possible illusion of depth in an entire world to explore was appealing. But as you play on you realize just how empty the entire game is. Quests?? The so called quests in DAOC consist of simplistic commands from NPCs. "Go kill this monster with this unique name".

WoW I'd imagine to be much better. Even though I am not tempted to try it even if I had a good comp. If I had a good comp I'd check out more reviews and seek in depth reviews. Maybe it is worth buying. But if it's too much like DAOC I'd be sorely dissapointed.

Ok, another picture question! How do I resize down my bitmap pictures I took from WoW? I want to have those pics hosted on imageback but I need to get the pic size under 1 meg (currently all my pics are 2.25 megs). What program can I use to resize these pics to a more managable size?

Tonight was evil. It was battle after battle after battle.

Day started even unique as I killed a guy twice 10+ levels ahead of me by tracking him around for like 10-15 minutes until he was low on health.

Then we went to desolace, and were questing and tearing up any horde we saw. Eventually they got a little upset and joined forces and attacked back with like 12 people against our 4. Then we got reinforcements and chased them out. Then stragglers would come in and there'd be skirmishes after skirmishes. Here check this out

Here's me and a guild member dancing for a Tauren while he's sapped (30 seconds of stun time or until he's hit. So he just has to sit and watch knowing his death will come shortly)

Yesterday when I was playing I asked every female player I saw if they were really a guy, almost all of them said they were female in real life. Makes you think.
