Widescreen or full screen HDTV?

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
It's almost redundant to have both DVI and HDMI for that reason, although standalone DVI can be used for a PC hookup.

On this topic, I would like to have all of my systems hooked up to my TV with component cables. I currently have my HDTV box and my DVD player hooked up through my two component inputs so I'm having to use S-Video inputs for my game systems when I don't want to change out my component cables.

I'd like to get a switchbox (even with the quality drop, the progressive picture would still be much better than using S-Video). I tried the cheap $99 Pelican box, but it just gave me a faint picture that moved across the screen even when using Monster cables. Does anyone have a good suggestions for a switchbox that won't kill my bank account, but still works well?

Do what I do.

2 Options here:

Go to RadioShack, get two composite switchers (one for audio, one for video)...
Obviously, the color on the switcher will differ from the ones on the component cable, but as long as you keep them consistant in the same order, it'll work just fine. They say there's not enough bandwidth to pump 720p or 1080i, but to honest, I don't see any image degredation when I run XBMC at 720p or 1080i via the switch boxes.

The better option is to get a receiver that has component switching. I have a Panasonic that does this. Digital receivers are also very good for this, have a smaller form factor and can switching video including HDMI sources if you get the right model.

I work in the home theater department and this set has to be the single worst lcd we have. I've seen this set come back to many times and i've already seen people come in with the service plans. for a bit more I would have told you to go with the 30" phillips.

How so? Quality wise they stand out, best quality out of the others. Why exactly are they the worse?

4:3 hdtv's aren't being made on larger sizes now so widescreen is the choice for anything bigger then 34-36". The market is for widescreen now more so then fullscreen.

Sure, but if you want one you can still get one if you look around and want a versitile CRT.

I have the 55" version of this TV and I absolutely love it and would recommend it to anyone. I got it for around $3000 at Circuit City (they price matched Best Buy's website) and the replacement plan was $500 (which includes bulb replacement, well worth the money).

argh....best buy has the service at 399.99 and you could have just quoted circuit and saved. Now one thing i was pretty sure on but not 100% positive is that Best Buy has surge protection but circuit city advantage plan does not...but could be wrong yet i would have gone to Best buy if i were you. But good choice on the set.

well i guess the fact that our floor models have gone to service 3 times and we've had more then 40% of them returned...even the Insignia's were a better choice. but i guess your PSP will come in handy....umm actually the set looks nice when working.

go with a widescreen...and pass on the sony plasmas and get the panasonics instead. ALSO look into dlp or lcd projection for your gaming needs...best to go with DLP though...Mitsubishis (WD-52525) or go with the Toshiba (higher-end series)

The Sony HighEnd Plasmas are the best thing I've seen yet. LCD has color reproduction issues even at the high end compared to plasma. Just go look at them at a HiFi Buys are something similar ( a high end place ) and the difference will be obvious. While plasma may have some other issues, for image quality and warm rich colors it is the best thing out there next to a plain old tube.

For tubes panasonics are pretty good, but on the Plasma AND LCD fronts Sony delivers them a pretty good smack down.

Considering the considerable number of complaints against best buy for their warranty repairs and several states currently investigating them I would refuse out of hand to purchase any electronics from best buy. For 'big ticket' purchases I only deal with Circuit City, HHGregg or in a clutch Sears (because I can call their service people and have them out in 48 hours).

Are you kidding? Go read any HDTV forum. Best Buy is notoriously the worst big-box retailer when it comes to buying big-screen TVs. Hell, for RPTV work their warranty didn't even cover a blown bulb until a little while ago. And their prices are usually higher than their competition (Circuit City and Sears), and even when they are lower you can always pricematch at Sears or CC.

Where are these HDTV forums?

Their warranty is still better priced and you can match the price at Best Buy and get 10% of the difference as well. With my experience with Best Buy has been great and not one problem. I've owned a RPTV, computer, and a surround reciever all of which had problems and i had the service with them and they fixed or exchanged them with the newest model.

every other store price matches to 10% of the difference too, so that's something that they're forced to do to keep up with the competition. I just report what I see. I've heard more complaints about Best Buy service by far than any other store. They are notoriously bad about repairs. Because it's a big box, it's probably depending on your area - you might just have a really good Best Buy. But regardless, organization-wide, they're considered to be pretty piss-poor when it comes to service.

I agree, I just see a hell of a lot more complaints about Best Buy than any other retailer. Like I said, it probably depends on your local store. But organizationally, Best Buy is notoriously poor when it comes to service.

It would've been tough to buy my TV at Best Buy seeing as they don't carry it in the store.

Nope the Pansonics are easily better than Sony on the plasma front. Pioneer and Pansonic lead the plasma market interms of moving the technology forward. There are some cracking stuff out very soon too from both manufacturers.

Which models? I was in HiFi Buys for 3 hours on Thursday looking at them and the Sony always looked better to me.

SONY KE-42XBR900 vs Panasonic PT42PHD4P is what I spent the most time comparing and the Sony looked better and I'd been reading on avsforums and looking at a couple of internet reviews which pretty much say the same thing. While the Panasonic was the reference set in pretty much all reviews, they all said that this set beat the Panny hands down.

I didn't really want to purchase either one :) $2K is just the absolute most I would consider spending on any TV set. I was really just there investigating the technologies of plasma and LCD to see how far things had come since the first generation products. Playing 7,9,10,50K on a TV-set that I wouldn't even spend more than 4-5 hours a week watching is just silly to me.

When will people learn shops arent what you measure PQ by? There are newer plasma models for both companies. Sounds like a bad place. The latest 42" Panasonic on their US website is $7000...

Oooh and check out the new Pioneers. :D They got rid of glass. Dont know if its out in the US yet.

I saw this TV today at Future Shop that looked perfect for what I wanted. It was a widescreen flatscreen HDTV/1080i titty fucking beauty that was probably about.... 30 x 12 inches or something along those lines. The image was just beautifully crisp, and it's within my budget (it's $999). I have a few questions before I buy it;

1) How does it display TV? Black borders on the sides or what?

2) Do any TV shows support true widescreen?

3) When I put in (a widescreen) DVD, does it just automatically play it true widescreen, no borders?

4) Do many videogames support widescreen, or am I going to be getting a lot of vertical borders?

5) In quick, point form, I don't know if it's 4x3 or 16x9. What are the pros and cons of those two shapes?

I really appreciate the feedback.

Just buy widescreen. I dont know why people ask :p Even if plenty of stuff is still stretched you probably wont mind. The good stuff is ussauly widescreen.

1) How does it display TV? Black borders on the sides or what?
A) You can choose. On 'Automatic' the tv chooses for you. Proper widescreen will change to widescreen, other than that its always stretched if left untouched. You can watch bordered if you like and want a true non widescreen experience etc. but i have never seen anyone use it.

2) Do any TV shows support true widescreen?
A) Yes many should do.

3) When I put in (a widescreen) DVD, does it just automatically play it true widescreen, no borders?
A) Should do. If set on 'auto'. or in widescreen mode.

4) Do many videogames support widescreen, or am I going to be getting a lot of vertical borders?
A) Many do, many dont. I dont think you will mind.

5) In quick, point form, I don't know if it's 4x3 or 16x9. What are the pros and cons of those two shapes?
A) They are just different screen size ratios. 16:9 refers to widescreen.
