Is everyone on Miiverse now or something? I keep coming here for impressions and not finding much life. There is still a place for gaf people!

sorry to hear about your troubles and I know this probably isn't what you want to hear right now, but it might be a good idea to invest in a usb lan adaptor. having one would bypass all the wireless nonsense and you'd have a much more reliable net connection.

I know it's not helpful in resolving your current issue, but it sounds like you're going through a lot of trouble with nothing working.

I've looked at one. Currently my update is about 50% complete, with it timing out every half a minute or so. I'm just repeating this process at the minute now to see if I can slog my way to completion. A lot of people have said the update fixes the connection issues.

If it doesn't, fuck Nintendo and I'll have to buy one. That will be followed by an extremely angry email to Nintendo at the same time, however.

Edit: Actually, they're getting one anyway, because a day 1 purchase in this state is laughable.

WiFi > USB LAN + ethernet. At least if you have a modern WiFi router.

These settings worked pretty good for me:

Good luck!

At the moment, I think this is the worst first impression I've ever had with a console:

- Refusing to update/connect correctly to internet.
- The gamepad battery was basically dead on arrival, meaning I had to charge it before I could play anything.
- The OS is painfully slow. At least I don't have any apps etc yet due to not being online so I'm not using it that much, I guess?
- NSMBU forces you to use last gen controllers in co-op. Why would anybody want to use the brand new controller they just paid a lot for? Let's use the old stuff for no good reason!

Sigh. I really understand the frustration of the Giant Bomb stream now. Console launches shouldn't be like this.

The part that I bolded is not strictly speaking true. You can certainly play with the gamepad while it is plugged in... (although maybe you don't have an electrical outlet near where you want to sit while you are playing.)

I tried that hours ago - no luck!

It is slowly getting there now. But it's a pain to have to keep restarting it.

On the step where it said "7. Now input that ip address but add 10 to the last number so "192.168.0.1" will be entered as "192.168.0.11""

I had to add 30 instead of 10. Then it worked for me. (I got a lot of devices hooked up to my WiFi.)

Did you try disabling the firewall and unchecking the "Block Anonymous Internet Requests " thing on your router's security page?

You can actually relatively safely disable your "firewall" on your router as you will still be hidden behind NAT.

The Wii U might just become my console choice for FIFA from next year. Loved the demo, while the gameplay felt more like FIFA 12 (hence why i won't get this version), the way you can quickly change your formation and the way the touch pad is used has won me over after just a few games.

One thing I don't have any complaints is the actual gamepad.

I think it could be smaller in future but the buttons all feel great, it's very ergonomic and that's one thing Nintendo always get right! It weights just right and I love the sticks!

I want to try the Fifa demo! Stupid NA eshop... :/

Too lazy to search all the different Wii U threads for this but...

Why is this only an option in Miiverse?

More Wii U impressions after about 6 hours...

1. I got lucky and had zero issues during setup. No problem getting on wi-fi, no problem with the initial update or registering a NNID.

2. The update process is so slow. It took over an hour to download the initial update on a 75 megabit connection. Title updates take upwards of 5 to 10 minutes each. That really needs to be addressed.

3. The OS has been stable for me but the slowness in loading different modules screams 'unoptimized'. The lack of TVii availability also says this wasn't quite ready when it was time to ship. I really hope Nintendo addresses this in future updates.

4. Nintendoland is hit or miss. The Donkey Kong game is pretty fun. So is the balloon game. But $60 as a standalone purchase? That's a joke.

5. ZombiU is the real deal. Scary and tense as hell. The element of risk changes everything. It's in my top 10 for this year. Possibly top 5.

6. Nintendo is on to something really good with Miiverse. Being able to post handwritten notes and drawings is the brilliant part. I spent a lot of time checking out artwork and reading through the community posts. It's got a lot of potential. Hopefully Nintendo enhances and refines it rather than saying 'good enough' and leaving it as-is.

7. NNID, friends system, etc... this is where the most work is needed after the slow updates and load times. This stuff is unintuitive, confusing, and awkward.

8. eShop. The fact that my NNID is bound to a single console kills any motivation I have in using the eShop to buy any full priced games. Nano Assault Neo? Maybe. A $60 Mario game? Nope. Either fix that issue or I'll only buy physical discs.

All in all I'm enjoying the Wii U so far. Miiverse and ZombiU really struck a chord with me. Without those I'd be less positive. It also helps that I didn't encounter the common setup problems and have not yet experienced any lockups.

For those who are having overscan issues - does your TV have a "Just Scan" mode? This is what I use for consoles. It's 1:1 pixel mapping.

Got a premium console yesterday. l simply cannot stop playing. The pad is amazing. The browser is fantastic: l am really impressed how it is possible to play video on tv and still surf the web. Do you know if it is possible to make folders in the bookmarks? The miiverse is beutiful. Overall the best console ever imho

All(?) 3DS demos have a play limit. Most allow 30 times though some wade in shallower waters.

10 is on the low side, but I think it's the publisher's decision.

Try looking in your TV settings instead. Most sets have an option to show all pixels/turn off overscan. Somehow it is not set to on as standard.

I spent 2 hours with my TV changing settings from "game" to "PC" to everything else. The overscan ended up getting worse and worse. I don't know why they don't put that setting into the main settings instead of Miiverse.

For those having connection issues try looking up the addresses of the nearest DNS servers of your ISP. Worked for me.

I live in central NJ. Comcast is my ISP. I couldn't find any servers in my state, so I used Philadelphia instead.

You know what I need?

A carry case made for the console with room for the gamepad and a couple of games. Seriously, are there any available in the UK?

Seems too obvious an idea. Going to the parents tomorrow night, and it'll be awesome to take the Wii U over and play whilst they all watch shitty X Factor.

You know, I don't even know where to post this, but I keep going back to that Penny Arcade DnD comic when thinking about the Wii U.

Developers need to completely decontextualize themselves from common game design thought if they want to succeed with this. In a sense, if you start off by picking a genre for your game, you're doing it wrong. You need to think, from the ground up, the kind of experience you want to build for a given set of hardware, not "alright, let's make a FPS. How can we make it unique on the U?"

- When you do get in to a game and enjoy it, the controller battery dies too quickly.
Time to put the pad on charge and go back to NSMBU with the Wiimotes...
How far is the outlet from where you play? You can still play while charging. I usually end up with the cable plugged into the Gamepad directly while resting it in the charge cradle (just to stand it up).

Got a wii u and the initial experience is awful. Downloading the update is primitive and gives me an error every minute. An ERROR CODE... Which ihave to look up online what it even means. I even get a new error code every time the update stops. So far so bad.

If you're got eShop games that can be played without a TV, it's as simple as just packing the Wii U, power brick, and Gamepad. That should fit easily in many bags.

Best Buy has a pretty neat one:

But it is fifty (!) dollars.

I think that issue is already fixed according to some other GAF member :) Should your console break you have to ship it to Nintendo and the new Wii U you will get will have a special flag enabled that lets you re-register your old NNID. Granted it's not the most convenient way but your purchases are never in danger like that. Here is the thread about it: http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=501550

Yeah, but then you have the possibility of the console and gamepad clattering around and getting knocked/scratched.

And that best buy case would be ideal...if I lived in America.

I had no problems whatsoever with the update. My experience so far has been smooth.

Lots of people seem to have issues. It's pretty silly to have a huge update on day 1 too. My connection is fast, but imagine having to download for hours before optimally using something you just bought. All around a bad thing. The least Nintendo can do is queue a small update first to at least make the update process better than just a progress bar that gives error codes and says 'fuck you' when something goes wrong.

I didn't have to. When I got my system I played a bunch of Nintendo Land and NSMBu. I did the patch later that night.

Nintendo has clearly been manufacturing and stockpiling these systems for quite some time before launch, thus requiring the day 1 megapatch. I do agree, some kind of mandatory baby patch, followed by the optional megapatch might have been more reasonable.

EDIT: Well, as seen above the patch isn't even mandatory anyway for basic functionality. I personally have had very few complaints with the downloads and patches. The system update took me about 45min to download and install. Game patches were very fast.

So what did the error codes mean?

I'm confused as to why you're getting error codes during the update, anyway. Mine got interrupted once too, but it just booted me out and I resumed from where it left off.

Miiverse really is a fantastic thing, having so much fun with it now that I've got some people on my friends list. :D I've spent hours on this thing just reading the messages and drawing my own. It seriously is really cool.

It makes me want to play games on the Wii U because of Miiverse integration! Like planned to play a game on another system but now I want to play Wii U one just cause of Miiverse!

So far the main disappointment for me with the system was how they handled the Wii compatibility. Yea its better than nothing but it strips away all the cool bits of playing on a Wii U. I mean, it doesn't even register the games and what-not in the Activity Log!

The Wii store stuff being completely separate is dumb too, some games could have got a new lease on life or a second chance for sales if they weren't 'hidden away' still on the old store.

If you are having constant issues with downloading the update, then that's a problem with your network, not Nintendo. You need to check your router settings.

Out of the dozens of bits of hardware I've bought over the years, this is the only one to have issues.

The only one.

Hmm, but yes, there must be something wrong with my router settings, not the console. That's the only logical assumption!

Google the issue and see how many different people with different problems getting online/downloading the update there are. The vast majority are knowledgeable people who don't have their routers set up wrong.

I'm really liking my Wii U a lot, more than I thought I would. Miiverse is a ton of fun. I just wish the connection was more stable and there were fewer bugs and errors. Overall, I wish the OS was faster and that it took fewer clicks to access things. I'm sure Nintendo will address these things as time passes.

I still haven't popped in Scribblenauts yet. I will later today. Miiverse is just addicting.

Day 2 with the Wii U and i'm absolutely in love with Trine 2. Had no issues whatsoever with any online, hard locks etc so I suppose i'm just currently one of the lucky ones.

Played NSMBU for a bit and finished the first world, looks amazing on the gamepad. I'll probably play this sparingly and it'll more than likely last me until after christmas.
