Will the server hold up during E3?

I remember that last E3 was a chaos for GAF, and it basicly didn't work at all. So GAF bought new hardware through donations. How is the situation looking this year? What kind of server specs do you have? There are even more members now, and GAF was very sluggish during GDC, so I smell another possible meltdown.

Does the server need to be upgraded yet again? I would be ok with chipping in with a few dollars if it makes it stable.

I know this is kinda off topic, but I took it here since it's the gaming frenzy that causes it.

This place can barely handle the Nintendo threads. If Mario ends up in one more game that doesn't involve jumping on enemies...well I don't want to think about what might happen. Here is a hint:

Explode ---> Implode ---> Nothing but smears of feces where GAF use to be

It only takes one surprise annoucement to cripple this place. Anything next gen will also cause some problems. So I would imagine this E3 especially will be a major headache

Yea, I don't get this part. I was happy to donate a few dollars last time, and I'd be happy to donate a few bucks toward a membership, but if the idea is to keep it free and open...can't GAF restrict itself a little during the busiest time?

I think new accounts shouldn't be made during the time. We were members only back then and the forum still crashed (IIRC).

Something should be done. I can't live without GAF for three or four days - especially not during e3!!

Take down the emotion icons (they did it last time)
Lock to member only
Delete 500 page archive and keep 20 pages like old GAF
Don’t allow users to post pics (links only)
Restrict to one refresh a minute
Lock Off-topic and Online forums

Won't Mike Works "ban all fanboys pre-E3" policy help once the forum is closed to members only? That should purge half of GAF pretty easily.

"Restrict to one refresh a minute"

Can they even check that?

Anyways, yes I think it would be fair to close the forum for non-members. That way at least some people will their fun. It's horrible to keep refreshing and then suddenly... It stops... *shivers*

That'll help, but I'm sure there will still be some problems at the time. It's just part of the E3 kick.

Tell the users (sticky thread) to refresh once per minute and hopefully they will listen.

this sounds like a good set of ideas.

but 1 thing I don't get, when you guys say lock to member only; u mean people who have a Member rank? or does that include the juniors too?

People won't pay attention to any voluntary refresh policy, unfortunately. They'll just assume everyone else is abiding by it, so they can refresh as much as they want.

Anyway, I think such a policy should be avoided if at all possible. Part of the fun of big events like that is refreshing the page and seeing 10 more "OMGWTF ZELDA!!!" type posts in direct response to events as they happen (now that we have live webcasts etc.). If it had to happen, once a minute might be too restrictive..

All IMO, of course. I'd agree with the other proposals, though.

No juniors are fine. But the forums should be locked to people who don't have memeber-ship: lurkers, peeps who are banned etc

or just make an E3 forum that is locked to members only (like the forum archives)

sounds good.

Though as people seem to want the archived stuff, i'm sure they could just take it off the server for that period or lock it off.

That's a pretty good idea actually, but I am not sure that the server will fare ok even with locked to members only. This is E3 with Zelda and Next-gen consoles we talk about :lol

I don't think it's ever been stable during any e3.

It's becomes slow throughout the first couple days (even with the OT forum closed and image tags disabled)

safest bet is DCC and/or irc.

Three new consoles are to be unveiled this year, on top of PSP and DS fall lineups and a playable Zelda.

There are no measures that can be taken to prevent GAF or any other Game-centric website from downtime during the show.

Efforts might be better spent creating an alternative of sorts, like the file share groups/FTPs we've used in the past.

Best idea yet!! Combine that with Doom_Bringer's suggestions and we might be able to make it through the conference :p

Plus, I'll most likely be in the IRC channel so I won't be there to witness it.

*flashback to PSP unveiling - making screengrabs like crazy, uploading them to webspace and spamming the channel*

I wonder if BlimBlim and I can get the torrent site running again. Somewhat of a pain last year.

or the game media site. that was alright, just mismanaged.

GAF crashed when IGN and Gamespot posted their Halo 2 reviews, it's not going to withstand E3 for long :lol

GAF is pretty light, the forum skin barely has any images. Making it members only and maybe putting things like smilies on an offsite location (or disabling them alltogether) would probably help a lot.

I just hope Nintendo has another webcast up this year. Last year's was awesome, I sat behind the computer with a friend and we were both screaming like little bitches when we saw that Zelda trailer. :lol
