I was curious. Then I realized I couldn't stand it and turned it off. Then I made a small joke post about it, that's all.

I wasn't too serious.

Is anyone in the Cambridge area? There is a Satoshi Kon marathon going on at the VES Department later tonight. 24 Quincy St.

I went to see the SAO film in cinemas. Well that was the idea, but instead, when I went into the screen, all I found was a bunch of police waiting ready to arrest anyone dodgy enough to buy a ticket for something, and I quote, "worse than child porn". Luckily the charges were dropped as the sting was deemed illegal.

Dimension W 1

The direction is pretty solid overall - I particularly like the transitions which are done with a sort of digital glitch effect, appropriate for the sci-fi setting. But I don't get these sorts of shots:

cVdvUep.jpg

where there's a character against a solid color background (plus a lighter color "shadow" of the character). It's a stylistic choice that seems to be thrown in at random without any meaning to it. It resembles a typical way of handling comedic reaction shots, but it's used in other types of situations as well. I'd prefer keeping the normal backgrounds of whatever place the characters are in.

There were a couple moments of clumsy exposition, particularly when the professor started reciting his backstory to the folks from New Tesla who had come to get him, but they're kept pretty minimal and the overall pace flows by fast enough that there's no opportunity for things to get bogged down. The show promises to be a solid watch, and of course I'm looking forward to seeing Ebata's touch on more elaborate action sequences. It's still no Bunny Drop, but it's sure better in both content and visuals than anything Kanta Kamei has done since then.

Love Live 05

This episode is called "Nico Attacks" which is both hilarious and dumb considering Nico is in the OP with everyone else including purple hair lesbian and blonde girl who hates idols.

I hope her joining up doesn't mean she stops her trolling antics because it was the best part of the show.

Fetish identified.

You don't even know.

The love for panythose isn't a fetish but a lifestyle by the way.

My lord, a good post, a good anime being talked about. In this thread?

What is this?

You paid to watch Sword Art Online in a theater.

Your satire is invalid.
Don't say that, I'm hoping to enjoy it! If I like it enough I'll pick up the 2nd GIG :p

Thanks, I paid $150 for it :)
Pay no mind. It's a great anime. Check out Ghost in the Shell: Arise afterward.

I'm not talking about the quality of the writing or direction - I haven't watched GitS SAC recently enough to speak confidently about that. But I did happen to see some screenshots of it again recently, and man, that show is butt-ugly. Early digital production was so problematic.

Will do! It goes without saying that it's not a crazy stance to take when one says that they love the GITS film but S.A.C seems to be a bit different tonally (correct me if I'm wrong!), hopefully I can enjoy it for what it is. I still need to watch Innocence...

Ah, sorry for the misunderstanding :) That's a shame, haven't really looked into the show enough to know about how it looks, hopefully that doesn't get in the way of my enjoyment of the show, which to be honest if the show itself is great it shouldn't be too much of a problem! :)

BUCHOU!

Legend of the Galactic Heroes 001

Is this the same battle as Overture but way faster? It kinda seems that way, but I'm not sure. The scene keeps changing every 40 seconds and its kind of annoying.

Baccano! is about as top tier as an anime can get.

Fantastic writing from the character work to the dialogue. It's so fucking great.

I've only heard good things about it. It's in that massive pile of shows that came out before I started watching animated stuff.

I just want to say that every time I'm skimming through some text and "Love Live" appears, I read it as Love Lab, get excited for a second, realize what it really is and cry get sad. Which sucks because that shit is everywhere.

Season 2 when? ;_;

I used to get those two confused but now I know better!

I disagree completely. I just rewatched SAC and I thought the overall animation and art direction was excellent aside from the horribly outdated CG (which is really just the OP and cars) and some "quality" character art in some episodes (which was pretty rare).

OK, I just grabbed the copy of SAC I've been meaning to rewatch and opened up a random episode and

Yep, still ugly.

Now to be fair, 2nd Gig looks better, mostly thanks to Tetsuya Nishio coming on board and refining the character designs. A random selection from it:

Oddly enough, despite using some of those nasty looking early-digital inking tools, SAC's BD isn't an upscale. Both seasons are actually among the few shows from that era to be done in HD. Very strange case.

It was partially funded by US money, and it was released in Japan as a monthly PPV show on a premium HD channel iirc. That might be why.

Yeah I'm hoping the BD looks good in any case, can't wait to pop it in. I share wonzo's high praise for the Oshii film but I'm hoping to enjoy S.A.C too, I'm sure both can coexist at the very least :)

Yeah, this was why. Was the company Manga Entertainment? I remember seeing their name in the opening for some reason.

The Major's design is poor and the character art in general is a mess at distance (I assume due to the focus on standard def?) but close ups are fine and the environmental, mechanical, and technical shots are great and more than make up for it IMO.
