But wouldn't you want to watch whatever in the best quality possible? Not to mention the price differentials between BD and DVDs aren't that large.

Maybe everybody who bought multiple copies for the event ticket bought lots of DVD copies since they're cheaper :p

This isn't really a fujoshi thing so much as a mainstream normal people thing. A lot of people really don't care that much. That's why big mainstream releases like Gundam Unicorn, Ghibli stuff, and even Eva sell a good ratio on dvd. This isn't exclusive to Japan either.

As for the price, it can add up, especially with discounts. If you're looking at a 15 to 20 buck difference per volume, the full set is quite a bit cheaper on dvd.

I only go to whichever panels I want, but mostly buy complete series of shows that I want a physical copy of, and spend the rest of my time trying to get casual sets in the game room, lol

I actually wouldn't mind going to comic con. I just don't wanna go to an Anime one because if I see one person with cat ears going 'nyaaa' I'll leave immediately.

Anime cringe is too much. Plus I'd only go to conventions with someone, and lord knows the few people who watch Anime with me would never go to one. But they'd go to comic con.

One of my coworkers hates anime (except recently Attack on Titan and Kill la Kill, because "those are the only good ones"), but he goes to anime conventions to cosplay and look at other cosplayers.

I don't get it.

Tell him I said he's a poser and his tastes are literally fresh bovine excrement
Please actually tell him

Too old for cons for me. Went to one for two years and stop when I realize I am just walking around to buy stuff when I don't have the money. Now, it isn't worth it as I can buy the item online (unless you want to get some Hen Tie stuff or want to pick up underage girl at the cons).

Oh yeah I've had words with him before. It's... interesting.

Worth noting that he also sees anime boobs in a video game and buys it even if it's a genre he hates (for example JRPGs, he hates them but has many many many complete series of the absolute worst trash in the genre - doesn't play them! just collects).

He is truly a... something.

That's a complicated man.

I went to AX in 2014, that place is linecon as hell and I got sunburn and busted my knees from standing around in lines forever. Highlight of the trip was standing in lines for autographs from Urobuchi and Inafune for hours each and failing to get either. I did get to meet the tentacle porn guy talked about in the last couple of pages though, he was pretty cool. Seeing the Tiger and Bunny movie was cool too. The room it was shown in wasn't even half full, but there was massive enthusiasm from the people there that I didn't even see at the Madoka showings in NYC.

I'm going again this year mostly just to hang with friends.

Anime Cons are fun when you go with friends and have a clear game plan on what you plan to do. Also to see how much money you can burn at the vendor hall.

I think the real problem here is that your friend (in addition to having shit tastes) does not have good financial senses. Utter waste to buy trash just to put it on a shelf.

A lot of people, even in my own group of friends, just don't care about the quality difference. In fact, I'd say that for most people DVD quality is "good enough".

While people like me are huge into collecting BDs for the superior quality, I feel that's limited to a niche of people.

I'd love to collect BDs, but all the horror stories about bad upscales and other quality issues makes me too afraid to even start. D:

It's all about research! Always research what you're buying first. You can ask here too! I can help with whatever I can, and I'm not the only one who collects around here.

I started collecting more BD's but yeah, before I was always content with DVD since the quality was good enough for me.

I miss the extra features that Bandai and Geneon had...

Aniplex and Bandai are both usually fine to good.

Haha, well, I exaggerate about being afraid. I just find it kind of stressful because I am a baby, and also I'm kind of lazy.

There are definitely some series I want to buy soon, though, once I've found a new apartment and have space to store/display.

Exactly. Always go with a friend with what you want to do there as a group to make it worthwhile.

I've always had a great time at anime cons going with friends. We even cosplay together! It's always a good feeling having your photos taken, and having your cosplay complimented. I tend not to go for many panels though. It's more of the atmosphere and dealers room that I love. I've found some great stuff every now and then, between merchandise and BDs.

Bandai Entertainment or Bandai Visual? :p

If you're interested in buying any FMA related BDs, get them now! The first movie and Brotherhood are going out of print soon, and I have a feeling the rest will soon follow.

Does it matter? Both don't exist in NA anymore.

Well, Bandai Visual still offers certain BDs as imports these days. They did it with Gundam Unicorn and are doing it now with Gundam the Origin.

It also matters if you're trying to acquire out of print BDs, and want to know if they're good or not.

My Little Adolf Can't Possibly Be This NTR'd or: Biology Lessons with Narrator-san (also known as Terraformars) 1-13 END

This is a really bizarre series. After the first two episodes it dumps you into never ending series of battles with supremely thin, bare bone main narrative thread. The non stop fighting is interspersed only with obligatory series of hilariously grimdark flashbacks for a dozen of newly introduced characters you don't know or care about. I struggle to fathom why the manga is apparently popular. I think I remember people complaining about Hamasaki's direction but as I always eat up his directing quirks, it was about the only noteworthy thing in this steaming pile of shit. I hope he gets a non-shit source material next time.

Anyhow, finally I completed my journey through Hamasaki's shows. Ranking:
Shigurui > Texhnolyze ≥ Steins;Gate >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Terraformars >>>Blade&Soul

B&S is a bit of an odd duck here in that it's very light on the usual stuff you'd expect from his shows. I read somewhere that's because he pretty much directed that in name only and it really wouldn't surprise me.

Spirited

Mine is pretty and pink
I'm debating starting to watch HxH, it's just so long so I don't know if I'll have the time to watch all of it.

Didn't realize Texhnolyze, Steins;Gate, and Blade & Soul were directed by the same person. Guess that's why the backgrounds mostly look the same.

Where does Iron Man: Rise of Technovore fall on this list?

It seems that people on other forums have been judging when the next set of Aniplex of Japan licenses will expire through Hulu expiration dates. If this method is correct, the next licenses that are expiring are the original Fullmetal Alchemist (7/31) and Birdy the Might Decode (10/14) from Funimation. In addition, Sound of the Sky from RightStuf (10/28) and Working! season 2 from NISA (12/31) may be on the chopping block. Black Butler season 1 may expire next year.

I actually thought Working! S2 was already out of print. I'm not interested in the series enough to buy it, but if you are, better sooner than later!

The potential upside of Sound of the Sky expiring is that we might finally get it on Blu Ray via Aniplex.

It's possible, but I wouldn't count on it. Aniplex isn't very big on catalog releases, they're very focused on current anime.
