Here are the definitive monocle shows you could consider, structured around a long group symposium and not any one person's bias -

Symphogear
Cross Ange
Mad Bull 34
Garzey's Wing
Monster Musume
Master of Martial Hearts
Mad Bull 34
Thermae Romae
Inferno Cop
MD Geist and MD Geist II Death Force
Astro Fighter Sunred

Back then, ALL of these would have been mustache shows.

I have not watched any of these.

To expand on this, the "monocles" were basically the elitists that may be condescending toward other tastes while the "mustaches" were the fun loving people that didn't care what you liked or didn't like and consumed stuff even if it was "trashy" or "poorly produced".

I don't really care to categorize people like that anymore when after 3+ years, it's become clear people are pretty malleable in what they watch as are their attitudes towards whatever. Not that the list was ever made with malicious intent in the first place of course.

And before anyone accuses me over the title of Class D, that was InfiniteNine's idea.

Just curious, what would the monocles generally say?

I believe Jexhius has given Cross Ange the monocle seal of approval.

I suppose, but those rankings would have shifted a lot over the years by the metric I used back then anyway. For example, Firehawk would probably be a class C now while I would veer slightly more toward the monocle side.

We banned hazing new members with The List, but what about new mods? It's only fair that our occupiers are acquainted with the local culture before our ancestral lands are annexed into a foreign empire.

Gargantia 1-3
Watched this because I kind of had nothing better to do and it was one of those free anime episode from Microsoft.
It's kind of interesting. A water covered world is kind of unique for an anime especially with mechs. The dub VAs were alright and it was interesting to see that they had different languages. The people are a bit too well-intentioned aside from the person who keeps telling them to throw the MC overboard and tear apart the mech. Being that appalled when clearly bad and violent pirates are killed is kind of stupid. overall, seems like an alright mech show so far

I vaguely remember there being conversations about sakuga and valuing it above all else including when it looked stupid (the Naruto/Pain fight was a huge talking point), shitting on shounen adaptations and "the toonami crowd" in general, stuff like that.

But that was a long-ass time ago and I don't remember much of what people's views were back then.

Gargantia was a great show. We talked about it not too long ago here, although opinions are divided as to whether it was a great show or not, most agree that it was entertaining. Enjoy the ride.

Pretty sure that KonoSuba is the mustache show of the season.

I need to give that show a shot. I've seen it being thrown around here so much lately that I'm curious.

I was mostly just generalizing, but I've definitely seen people complain about those shows for those reasons in here.

I don't know who in here counts as a "monocle" tier poster, but they certainly came off that way to me.
dismissing madoka purely for its aesthetics & ttgl (his most restrained series) over imaishi being a huge perv sounds normie as hell tbh fam

Might start watching the JoJo series again, only 2 episodes into Bizarre Adventure, kinda doubt I'll catch up before Diamond Is Unbreakable starts though.

The question I need answered is if Prison School is monocle or mustache.

Grimgar doesn't fit into either.
It's sub-mustache animesuki tier.
Ouch.

Not really; something like Phantom World where you could easily bang out a five paragraph single episode breakdown of the storyboarding and shot composition of each scene, analysis of character psychology, and namedrop animators behind individual cuts and still end with "in conclusion, shit sux" is a better fit.

Now I am confused what mustache show means.

Remember the good old days where 7th was so sure that Imaishi working on BRS TV was just a one off and his one true love was hand drawn animation? And how KLK was going to bring the 2D sakuga? Good times.

Hmm, well I'm the Toonami crowd and I don't like shounens seriously anymore...

I am too, because in 2011 there wasn't a third sub-class of viewer here who subsisted entirely on light novel adaptation material. So the intended dichotomy was never "classy" versus "crass".

Originally, a "mustache show" had some redeeming critical qualities or appeal to genre work fans but was too flawed to appeal to anyone who holds anime to the same critical standards that they hold the works of other mediums. I brought up Phantom World because it's great from a technical perspective but the writing is garbage.

I didn't watch the gafcat show. Was it also yaoibait?
No it's not. The lead is a pretty boy and kind of effeminate, but he basically has like one or two close male friends that appear very very fucking rarely and they're both just bros. 99% of the show it's just his adventures with gaf cat.
