It's almost as if WW was already a house hold Name that catered to a long ignored new audience and somehow never had her own movie in 70+ years of existence!
And 15 years inflation since Spiderman.

Burton's Batman had the biggest opening weekend ever when it came out, and was merchandised extremely heavily. It was *everywhere* for the whole Summer.
I don't think a movie has taken of the pop culture quite so much since, and I am not kidding.
I think you mean highest grossing.

TFA might have been bigger, but that's the only thing that I thought might compare.
I don't know how quantifiable this is, but shirt, bat-symbols on everything, the Prince music-- shit was omnipresent. Batmania in full effect.
I'm not saying this out of any reverence for the movie (I think it was so-so on release and has aged horribly).
Wolf Warrior 2 has made around $764M in China, and has now passed Avatar to become the second largest single territory gross of all time.
How much of that is due to your age though? I think you said that you are around 50. So you were in your early 20s when Batman came out. Smack dab in the target demographic. All of that stuff (minus the toys) was marketed your way.
Girls Trip makes Rough Night's failure all the more fascinating to me. I'm sort of morbidly curious to watch it whenever it comes out.
Joss Whedon's gonna be more problematic than Zack Snyder by the time JL comes out.

How so?I was thinking much the same.

Isn't Zack's reputation just based on the quality of his movies? If Whedon has indeed been sleeping with fans over the years, I fully expect there to be accounts of this stuff dropping over the next few weeks, at which point yeah his reputation will be way worse than Snyder's.
Isn't Zack's reputation just based on the quality of his movies?
He seems to be a really nice Guy based on people that worked with him. Whedon situation sounds way worst
Yeah as far as I know Snyder is a good guy in person. Sucker Punch seems like the main source of him being viewed as problematic.Isn't Zack's reputation just based on the quality of his movies?

Ah. I get it now.You are correct. Hence why Ross said that Whedon is going to be more problematic than Snyder.
I've been a pop culture guy my whole life, certainly wouldn't have changed by the time Jurassic Park came out.
i'm just saying that it was a phenomenon that reached just about everybody. Older people still remembered the 66 show, everyone knows Batman, and this was the first "serious" take on the character on film. It even invaded pop music, the soundtrack was #1 for most of the Summer, too.
I agree TFA was like this too-- I almost referenced it with a hedge to my first post.
I'll be perfectly honest, if Joss stepped away from Batgirl I wouldn't be disappointed. Watching Edge of Seventeen last year, Kelly Fremon Craig seemed like she'd be a good fit for Batgirl.
But I imagine Joss will stay on Batgirl and most of these stories will be swept away and forgotten.
I'd say WW is far more important that potentially. This is the first time female director has made such a successful action block buster. If Patty Jenkins leads the way for more female action block byster directors it'll have far more an impact than either Spiderman or Batman did. Genre specifically a rise in female directors and emale lead superheroes could lead to more gains in the demographic.
Amusingly, Just like Nolan.Zack Snyder works with his wife as his producing partner. Probably one of the more stable Hollywood marriage arrangements.
Man, Mimi Leder can't catch a break. Directed Deep Impact to $140 dom/350 million in 1998 (a blockbuster by any standard back then) and no one remembers.
If Joss were to step down or be removed from Batgirl( which I think is very unlikely) I don't know if WB would still go through with it. Save for Sandberg, WB has been looking for notable, experienced, and "safer" choices ever since the change in management.I'll be perfectly honest, if Joss stepped away from Batgirl I wouldn't be disappointed. I browsed that Star Wars TFA thread just now, since I was curious how it warranted 900+ posts. People are out for blood in those types of threads...

The Liefeld stuff baffles me. All these stories of shit he's done behind the scenes, but everyone still seems to like him.I joke about him, but i always heard Mark Millar was a nice guy. And Rob Leifeild stole money from people and in the industry and they talk fondly of him.

I chalk it up to him looking lik a grown Dennis the menace and you just want to ruffle his hair like a lovable scamp
After tripping on some pouches since they couldn't see where their feet were. They'd burst into his office all pissed, see one of his penciled comic pages, start to feel bad for him, and then forgive him.
Quick! Someone mention Avatar!I see that we are back to off-season box office threads. It was a good run.

But will Stephen Lang be able to take down Wolf Warrior?
EDIT: Had to dig for that pic again (and repost it off Photobucket before it disappeared). But man, this thread from 2010 as Avatar was within $7m of Titanic's worldwide record was fun to read tonight.
that thread had 400 posts
mother fucker we would have filled 2 threads if an avatar-esque run happened today
shiiiiiiiiiit, it's gonna happen when avatar 2 doesn't make a billion worldwide!
I see literally no scenario where the Avatar 2 thread isn't both enormous and entertaining.
I am still bracing for the Justice League thread. That one is gonna be a shit show no matter how the grosses play out.
