Burton's Batman had the biggest opening weekend ever when it came out, and was merchandised extremely heavily. It was *everywhere* for the whole Summer.

I was there for it - it was great. But of all films, TFA handily wins the "hysteria-inducing film" category. There was Star Wars shit *everywhere*. Hell, it still is everywhere. Not to mention the moon-sized wad of cash the film made.

I don't know how quantifiable this is, but shirts, bat-symbols on everything, the Prince music-- shit was omnipresent. Batmania in full effect.

How much of that is due to your age though? I think you said that you are around 50. So you were in your early 20s when Batman came out. Smack dab in the target demographic. All of that stuff (minus the toys) was marketed your way.

I've been a pop culture guy my whole life, certainly wouldn't have changed by the time Jurassic Park came out.
i'm just saying that it was a phenomenon that reached just about everybody. Older people still remembered the 66 show, everyone knows Batman, and this was the first "serious" take on the character on film. It even invaded pop music, the soundtrack was #1 for most of the Summer, too.
I agree TFA was like this too-- I almost referenced it with a hedge to my first post.

Main thing is Girls Trip has a group with chemistry and charisma. Rough Night seems to have a group of friends that act like strangers. And what is surprising is the Broad City talent on Rough Night, but I guess without the core Abbi and Ilanna friendship to ground it, everything falls apart.
Not in light of today's article, but I've been thankful Joss didn't have autonomy with the JL material when writing for Diana and Mera.

If Whedon has indeed been sleeping with fans over the years, I fully expect there to be accounts of this stuff dropping over the next few weeks, at which point yeah his reputation will be way worse than Snyder's.

Jesus. Honestly, this doesn't really surprise me (not on a personal to him level, but on a person in a powerful position level), but this might be the worst possible timing for him for this stuff to be coming out.
This almost certainly won't affect JL (and unless we start getting more specific stories, I don't even think it'll affect the press junket), but it arguably gives him a much shorter leash on Batgirl. Like, there's a legit argument to be made against letting him have final say over casting with this type of info coming out.

Yeah as far as I know Snyder is a good guy in person. Sucker Punch seems like the main source of him being viewed as problematic.

I'll be perfectly honest, if Joss stepped away from Batgirl I wouldn't be disappointed. Watching Edge of Seventeen last year, Kelly Fremon Craig seemed like she'd be a good fit for Batgirl.
But I imagine Joss will stay on Batgirl and most of these stories will be swept away and forgotten.

I remember all of the Batman merch, but as a 7 year old. I was a bit older for Jurassic Park, so I remember that better. The merch was also everywhere, but maybe that struck younger? I don't know.
I do know that both Star Wars revivals were pretty nuts.
As far as box office and home video sales go, all of those films were bigger than Batman, adjusting for whatever metric you want.

I forgot about her. Though you could argue that that one at least had a female lead (Tea Leoni). I think I've said it before, but to me, we will have crossed a significant barrier when we have a female director do a success male-led movie (which we ironically enough almost had with Jenkins and Thor 2), because all we have now is "if we do a movie with a female lead, we need to put a female director on it", which is nice except for the fact that only one out of like 6-8 of these movies, even going forward, is going to have a female lead.
If Joss were to step down or be removed from Batgirl( which I think is very unlikely) I don't know if WB would still go through with it. Save for Sandberg, WB has been looking for notable, experienced, and "safer" choices ever since the change in management.

But either way I think hailee steinfeld is a great actress and holds her own opposite more experienced actors i wouldn't be surprised if she gets the role. She'd be great
