[Xbox] Power on: The Story of Xbox

Six 40 minute videos, they've gone all in. wasn't expecting that much watch time for this. Strapping in now.

I feel a bit sorry for Don Mattrick. Its apparent that all the xbox one casual initiatives was not all born from him. He had steve balmer and other people at Microsoft pushing him and Xbox to widen the market beyond gamers.

In a way we should be thankful for the xbox one mishaps because it will remind any big company never to lose focus from a gaming platform.

Skimmed through the last episode and wow this looks brutally honest and super transparent. Didn't expect that, it's awesome.
Still a little bit too long for me to watch the whole thing.

We need a new series documenting how Phil has been eating nothing but cheeseburgers during his time as lead of Xbox.

i've said this so many times. he took the fall and scapegoated but he wasnt solely responsible for it. he was the one to present it to the public but its not like it was his idea. the guy was just doing his job.

hilarious how MS was jumping for joy and literally crying seeing Sony announce a $599 PS3 vs their $399 Xbox 360. Then next gen they announce their console for $499 only to get owned by the $399 announcement. You think they'd remember the importance of having an equal or low cost option in comparison.
Don Mattrick was a total tool.

Back in 2013/14/15 gaf and other internets where a fever pitch for xbox hyperbole hate, I remember people even did whole threads dedicated to how not genuine major nelson was. Anything xbox was a "yikes" "oh shit its bad", it was uncanny.

OK just binged watched all 6.great series.... MS didn't shy away from admitting their mistakes with the RROD, and Xbox One kinect and messaging catastrophe. I would have slated Don Mattrick a bit more as he almost killed the brand off entirely.... But being as he was a guest on the documentary... I can see why they didn't lol.

GAF users slate the xbox as a whole over other consoles but after watching the documentary, there is quite alot that xbox pioneered that wouldn't have been standard if it weren't for them. I think a lot of people (including myself) forget many of the things that weren't actually around or standard until MS made it standard.... These include-

1)MS was the first to a hard drive as standard, and allowed you to store music and listen to them while gaming
2) Online console gaming didn't really exist until xbox. Yes the dream cast dabbled... But it wasn't entirely fleshed out. Gamertags weren't a thing and voice communication wasn't common. There was no proper ecosystem.
3) again with online, it became very social with voice communication, profiles, comparing achievements, sending messages. I remember doing a lot of this on the OG xbox (not achiements) whilst the PS2 was just clunky and bog standard (no default ether net Port)
4) when the 360 launched it was completely new to download games from an online store. It started off with mostly 'arcade' or light games but fleshed out into ful retail games.
5) people forget that back in the 360 days it wasn't common to be able to watch / stream content from a console device. As said the the documentary, they did give a huge boost to Netflix in its early days.

Yes these features are bog standard now... But I can bet that Sony wouls not have had many of these features had it not been for xbox. PS2 practically had zero ecosystem for its online. And if I remember correctly, early days of the PS3 online was bad and clunky compared to the 360.

They didn't even add trophies to the PS3 until 2008.

Don Mattrick looks even worse than ever before.

Also that GTA III exclusive, sigh...

Also did I understood it correctly that Netflix was rent a DVD type of service and that MS contacted them if they want to do a streaming or did I misheard?

lol i remember those days so vividly. PSN was an absolute joke compared to xbox live. still had more features at launch in 2006 than the switch online did in 2017 though! which goes to show how much of a joke nintendo's online offering really is.

Well after watching it and openingly detailing their errors and persistence gives some closure. It definitely shows the different shades at play from arrogance, to humility and the people behind it. I like how they owned up to the mistakes and looking to rectify it in the future. After time passes looking back, you just want to remember the good old times, no point beating the past with a stick, in the end it makes for a good story. Hopefully there won't be any more fuck ups on Microsoft's end.

So far Halo Infinite is not living up to the hype I had compared to Halo 3 and Reach. And a modern Banjo Kazooie game is missing in action.

Just finished. That was an excellent documentary and a rare glimpse of the backstage shit that goes down.

Honestly, the first few episodes painted Bill Gates as a pretty ruthless person, you wouldn't be able to tell that by looking at how mild mannered he always appears in front of the camera.
Haha i never fell for the on camera appearance. Both him and steve jobs were ruthless behind the scenes.

Shocked at how much PlayStation lives in MS head, all because some dweeb felt he should have been the "king of the living room"?
No you are not king of the living room, i am king of the living room.....

That's their legacy that's how it all began:messenger_tears_of_joy:

Oh boy, wait till you find out what caused Sony to make PlayStation in the first place....

In July 2006 I also got a RROD. I sent it back and got it delivered just when I was about to leave my house for vacation. It was bad, but there were lots of fanboys denying the scale of this problem. Its obvious, especially after this show, that it was even worse than what I thought. It was a 100% failure rate essentially and almost ended the brand. Even those employees saying they had their console bricked multiple times lol.

And Don Mattrick, well, he was bad but he did reach out to the casual crowd. Kinect was initially a tremendous success and the 360 surged. Also the media streaming thing was something he pushed. Ofcourse, I liked 360 more during its core audience days with the blades OS.

It ain't no weak ass king of the living room shit. It was a deal gone wrong, PS was born from a real vendetta.

They were both made in a response to another console, that´s how the cycle continues.

The PSP was made in response to Nintendoś handhanelds as another example.

I felt the living room stuff was an excuse conjured up to push their console idea. Sony did release a DVD player with their PS2 but other than that did nothing to replace a PC.

When life gives you lemons...

They'll make back the money selling these.

Turned down GTA 3 as exclusive to Xbox when it was offered. Rockstar would be a likely Xbox exclusive dev and GTA an Xbox exclusive franchise. How unbelievably short sighted lmao. I knew immediately upon seeing GTA 3 go full 3D it would be a hit. Even the previous games despite not being the monsters GTA 3 and later titles would become, the core gameplay was always peak fun. Expanding that with voiced dialogue, and making it a more cinematic experience was always going to be a major hit. Clearly whoever had the decision making authority there messed up big.

I don't know about an Xbox exclusive. But like you I was confident that a 3D gta was going to be special. I followed it from announcement to release and was not disappointed. Incredible game and get for Sony

This is a must-watch. It gives major insight into how Xbox was created and established. It also shows how pivotal Xbox is in gaming history, and how they contributed to what we take for granted in gaming today.

I wish we get more documentaries like this from Sony and Nintendo. So they can be documented and shared in the future.

I do appreciate how directly MS is talking to customers, in depth too. I wish Sony would do a bit more… at least be as open as Apple, at least that :).

I do not mind Cerny being more subdued and bordering on underpromising sometimes, but I think there is space for tech deep dives.

Watching this now. Very nice and interesting. I like knowing all this inside stuff. It's not all roses. It's filled with issues and obstacles. A rocky adventure.

And Don Mattrick, well, he was bad but he did reach out to the casual crowd.

It was a surprise to see him there for sure. However, you can see his thought process wasn't actually that misguided after pushing for more multimedia on the 360. I mean at the time core gamers were like "Netflix and renting movies that's a cool bonus" and it was successful. It falls down when you just focus on that and go for the TV audience who were never going to buy your expensive game box.

In my eyes he's actually a little bit redeemed in his failure outside of the narrative we've been presented with.

Just finished it. This was a really well made series. Absolutely a must watch for gamers. It's terrific to see Microsoft dedicated to preserving the history of their brand and the story behind it.

Isn't that known? That was design/production problem caused mostly by switch to lead free solder. many devices from that time had similar problems like failing GPUs in first generation MacBooks Pro and in HP notebooks.

Back then MS kinda denied it. And consumer support also denied it and kinda told me it was my fault perhaps. The only one who told me that this was par for the course was the UPS guy, since all he did was picking up those boxes. Fanboys online would say its no biggie and I treated my console wrong.

But it started flooding during the summer. And MS eventually acknowledged it. Internally they already knew they were dead.

Peter Moore talking how he went to Steve Ballmer after the RRoD fiasco to ask for a billion dollars that were needed to set up a first class customer care service where 360's were going to be repaired or exchanged no questions asked. Totally expected to be yelled at but Steve was kinda calm and said do it, set it up, we figure it out later. That saved the brand.

I only watched episode one but then had to go to bed but it was really fascinating. I never knew Bill Gates was such an angry bugger! He always seemed so nice and down to earth in the multitudes of other clips I've seen. What goes on behind closed doors, eh.

I also think it's very interesting that 20-odd years ago, Microsoft were worried about Sony's claim of PS2 killing the PC stone dead and so they had to come up with something as well. And here we are, PC is bigger than ever before. It will be the one standing when the consoles have gone the way of the cloud.

I finished the first 4 episodes. It's really captivating! Very well put together, and super informative too.
Also, some of this stuff hits right in the nostalgia veins.

Bill ran a billion dollar multinational company. He couldn't have been a nice guy in office.

No it wasn't. That's an urban legend you bought into. Sony tried to fuck over Yamauchi by writing the deal so that it gave them exclusive control of the Super CD format and all the software while Nintendo would only control the cartridges. There's no way 90s Nintendo would agree to a deal that locked them out of the CD based software and there's no way in hell they'd made a game on CD and allow Sony to own it. So Yamauchi ended the deal when he read that in the contract

I actually did feel a bit bad for Don after watching that one. As a group Xbox gamers really took a disliking to him (myself included), but he never quite got the chance to see his vision through.

Same here, the guy had actually good intentions and the direction he took really seems like an obvious, logical evolution from the OG and X360, but the execution was simply terrible, that 100$ difference alone was bad already, but then that awful always-online policy literally single-handedly killed the console. Like it was even said in the documentary, in 2014 the world simply wasn't ready for a digital-only future (and I don't thing such strict policy would work even today, and ever will). And he never had a chance to try to fix the situation, so it feels like he will be forever remembered/labeled as "the guy who fucked up Xbox" by the gaming community, you can tell be was ashamed talking about the console and its launch.

But after watching all episodes I have to say, MS doesn't get enough credit for how it revolutionized the console landscape, betting on HDD and internet connection as a standard equipment was indeed a game-changer, and today we see the results (for better or worse tho), plus Halo basically brought all the previously unavailable/unplayable genres to consoles, which then lead to games becoming console-focused during the PS360 era.

But the vids also made me sad about how gaming turned back to being played mostly solo, two generations ago we had people with headsets playing together/agains each other, trashtalking and what's not, it was so damn fun, and nowadays everyone is afraid to turn the mic on because you're one click away from getting reported by some fragile pussy and getting banned, losing everything.

Poor MS, first they get laughed out by Nintendo, then a few years later they get laughed out by Capcom/Mikami when trying to do a similar deal for RE4.

It was ROHs era, almost no electronic from early 2000 lives today, un-lead solder isn't flexible as lead solder and that cause problems with heat cycles.

Agreed. When it comes to modern gaming, Xbox kick started most of the biggest trends on console today (online store, online head-to-head, FPSs, etc).

Even the inclusion of a wireless game pad as standard. Almost forgot that one.
