Fuck this game! Can't even get past the first mission. What a bunch of bullshit.

No seriously, the bugged spawns are annyoing. I had two on top a bunch of times already, but that's a first.

If that is your screenshot, play on veteran, where troopers always die to grenades due to having one health less. Makes the learning curve a lot smoother.
90+% grazes are rough

Does the "Stop wasting my time" mod remove the action cam? I kind of like that actually.

No, it doesn't, it just remove some of the slow down.

Umm... Hmm. Had an interesting glitch due to a mod update:

The more armor customization mod modded out central's clothes, so everyone that I had wearing them looks like this now >.>

.

I've beaten Legendary/Ironman once already. Trying to get a deathless run now. That involves replaying the first few missions .. a lot. :/

Oh. Well, I hope you never achieve it, so you can have fun with this game forever!

Luckily we'll have mods to keep things interesting. Right now there's the grenade radius one or taking away the rng punishment of aliens. I'm sure people will come up with more stuff to keep the game fresh/challenging.

Just started a new playthrough, and it confirms my thoughts that the game gets worse in terms of performance as you progress. Feels a lot smoother than my end-game save.

Surprisingly enough, I did the verify game files thing when I was trying to diagnose another bug, and that gave me my performance back.

Sectopods don't like bluescreen ammo gunslingers.

Wait what? How is that possible? Aren't Sectopods organic?

That was me yesterday. It didn't botched my game, just got my top grenadier killed because I failed to notice the overwatch two tiles away from him. :|
This is my bane. Not pressing Run n' Gun, or not noticing Overwatch.

Watch the autopsy video of it then.

Sectopods are the big robot things that appear lategame. Sectoids are the the naked zombiephillic aliens you encounter early-game.

Can't wait til I get psi operatives on this run

So I can mind control sectoids and use them better than the AI uses them

Just used "serial" on my sniper and he killed 6 enemies in one single turn. It was glorious.

Time to wrap this up. I've been avoiding finishing this campaign for too long.
I'm going to miss my soldiers.

Welp, I'm already drowning in cosmetic mods. lol.
Still nothing that changes gameplay, but everything with "facepaint" and "tattoo" on it is finding its way into the war.

You can never have enough camo or war paint when fighting aliens. every little bit can help for sure

Game has a bit of a weird balance to it. Seems like the beginning is really rough, but then it eases up massively as you unlock some proper gear, even with the nastier enemy types showing up the right setup will counter it easily which is just not an option you have in any way closer to the start. The procedural design seems to play havoc with this at times too. I started a guerrilla mission once and got my ass handed to me, but then reverted to an older save to try a different approach and not just the map but even the mission type changed to something a whole load easier.

It's still really fun and a great game but this and the really bizarre performance issues are hampering the experience a little bit to be honest. Still prefer it to EU in a whole load of ways and am glad to not have to keep babysitting the entire planet 24/7.

It has the it is too hard until it's too easy thing going on, but I find I have fun even when it becomes easy because it has a nice variety of enemies and your own skills. Late game EU was just boring. Late game here I am not tense, but I am entertained.

I've definitely found it getting easier on my ironman run, but a lot of that is because I've adapted on how to, and how not to, approach objectives. Like maximizing my position before engaging an enemy on untimed missions, or moving forward cautiously while in stealth for timed missions.

Also I stopped hemorrhaging rookies a while ago which has given me a stable squad to work with.

Now the game is about not screwing up. I dunno; it seems OK so far, but all it takes is one mistake or bad roll to change everything.

Difficulty fell off a cliff by the time I'd obtained a Psi Operative with the alien amp, mind control and void rift. Came back for that bullshit final level, but mind control and void rift balanced it out.

Got my top grenadier (Ciri) in top tier armor killed by a Sectopod in 1 shot behind full cover, and in the previous mission my top ranger was killed by 3 advent troopers all shooting at him in full cover (he was unflanked) and ALL OF THEM HIT. ARRRGH. I think I'm gonna quit XCOM for tonight. I feel terrible for having to savescum, but this is my first ever playthrough so I can be lenient on myself for it so I can learn the game. Thanks to whoever suggested the Conventional Armor Customization mod, now all my troops don't look like they're straight from Mass Effect and fighting the Reapers.

I'd recommend Unrestricted Armour Customization, because it lets you also customize the WAR and Wraith suits to appear as kevlar. You can use it in addition to the Conventional Armor mod, though obviously you'll have duplicate slots.

True but fundamentally it is still the same. Why would you try to plink away at an enemy behind half or even high cover when you could just destroy it or flank them or pin them or any other options you could have that are much safer and aren't based on probability. It just so happens Firaxis kept grenades more or less as-is from EW, if not buffed them tremendously so that they do more damage. Most of the time - as far as I have played - you still need to follow up with actual shooting or something else, it's just that now you have way better chances to hit and crit exposed targets.

And let's not pretend anyone in high level play ever really brought along laser sights in LW except maybe on snipers, because even when LW grenades had way reduced damage (environmental or otherwise) and damage dropoff, it's still worth tossing them over shooting at something in cover. And in LW you would go from 6 to 12 men so only then was accuracy by volume actually a worthwhile endevour. When you max out at 6 people that's a much bigger loss on a miss than having 8 or 10 or 12.

Yeah, my main point was that unless they make flanking more attractive (i.e. more reliable), there's no reason to try and flank and expose yourself to the risk of activating more pods - and thus everyone will just sit in their current spot and spam grenades.

LW also didn't have turn timers, so you could flash/suppress enemies if you didn't have a great shot on them to keep them under control while you moved to flank them. Laser Sights didn't get a ton of use, but you got SCOPEs really early on, which were huge.

I think it's time for a restart now anyway, don't have any anti-robot weapons and don't have the resources to build EMP grenades. Really not familiar with the tech trees. Letting Sectopods shoot at you for too long is a squad wipe in the making, it seems.

Did you research an Advent MEC? That leads to bluescreen rounds, and they only cost 50-75 supplies.

That's why I don't let anyone take a hit, and don't waste a single point or supply for recovery -.-

Still a wounded soldier is better than a dead soldier. I find it very handy to have a specialist around leaning down the healing tree just in case. My healer drone has saved me from a bad roll a number of times and later in the game their mileage is pretty incredible. Though taking a hit can really come back on you. I wounded my specialist and grenadier then landed in an important mission with an 8 round timer and 4 snipers in my squad. That was rough.

And so it ended my first legend ironman run at the first retaliation mission.
I aced the first mission and then from the second forward no deaths, but always one or two injuries.
I think that until I manage to have a ranger captain on that first retaliation mission, it will always be tough.

Yup. I know it's usefull, but, normally, my missions take the minimum of 1h to be completed.

That's how much I hate been hit hahahaha. Still... I've been hit many many times, but just one died.
I've abandoned one too. He panicked when enemies missed a shot at him, with just one turn to evac, so he ran into fire and waited a near by car explode. I wanted to load my last game to save him, but, that would be cheating, so left him. Missions later, game gave me the chance to recover him as VIP, which was a very good surprise from XCOM.

Huh... so I'm crawling my way through my first Advent Blacksite mission and then the Aliens just stop doing anything. Like I can have my guys go right up to them in plain sight and blast away. The Alien Activity message will pop up when its the Alien's turn but then nothing.

Finish the mission and jump into another and still the same thing, no Alien AI, they just sit there and don't move.

Edit: Quit to desktop and restarted the game and the Aliens are back to kicking my butt again.

Man, the mission you get when the
UFO disables the ship is a bitch. Endless waves of enemies the whole time.
Now I have 8 people injured, and the Avatar project meter just went
from blips to a timer
. I've only attacked
one blacksite so far, was readying up to attack another. Have done all the initial shadow chamber research,
if that indicates story progress at all.

Am I fucked? Should I go back to an earlier save? All my soldiers
have the upgraded armor and weapons, I just built the psionic room, and I have the full squad number unlocked.

My save started going in that direction and I just started over and focused on building the shadow chamber and doing the blacksites ASAP even if I had to ignore marked important missions. I lost regions to get to blacksites multiple times. About to finish it up now I think.

Yeah, this game is ball breakingly hard. Is this the most difficult AAA game in 10+ years? Feels like it to me.

Is the second blacksite available to attack right away? That might be your only choice since you HAVE to knock down the meter and that will do it.

It's available, but I don't have enough good soldiers healthy without a few days of healing at least, but it seems like my last autosave is only a day or so before the last box ticks over. I hate that they don't seem to tell you when the meter is gonna tick up.
