XCOM 2 |OT| Be Aggressive! Be Be Aggressive!

Wait you can uncurl those fuckers? The only one I had any trouble with was one I activated in the same go as a sectopod + advent escort. I was high up so when it tried to close in I lost track of it, and then it zombiestormed me, and the next time I saw it it was a writhing mass of goo.

Every other time I had a Psi-Op with stasis on-hand.

Once they attack with a Psi attack they open up. You get one hit for higher chance to hit, extra dmg, no armor and then they close.

How close am I to the end of the final mission?

Currently dealing with two Gatekeepers. I've used all my healing items, all my rockets (only had two EXO suits), but still have two flashbangs and a frag or two left. Can't deal with these fucking Gatekeepers at all. The only time they open up is when they're dealing massive fucking damage to my troops, otherwise I'm just chipping away at their health. Using all gaus weapons, predator armor, a spider suit and two exo's. My squad is two grenadiers, a sniper with mostly gunslinger skills, two specialists (one healing, one damage, never really bothered with hacking) and a ranger with a mix of sword and stealth skills. All major or above. I'm beginning to fear I'm gonna have to restart the whole mission on account of being under-equipped for the final fight.

What am I in store for? Any advice?

Sounds like you progressed story too fast and/or teched too slow. Dealing with Gatekeepers pre-plasma sounds like hell.

Oh, I was wondering why it was all blobby. I thought it was because it had been sitting next to a fuel tank when random EMP nade managed to catch it in its blast.

It's like a cyberdisk shell ADVENT scooped sectoids into. ewww

I think they're cute for tentacled horrors in a death star.

The RNG was strong with me today.

UFO defense mission, never had one before, its late game I have a team of pros.

I rush most of my team forwards and grapple my sniper to a vantage point. Trying to kill the beacon thing asap since it's an objective. My plan is to fire long range nades with my two grenadiers if I can do that. My sniper uses pistol overwatch, and my support dude has Ever Vigilent so he gets a free overwatch even though he dashed. Enemies run straight into my team, both overwatches hit the enemy Archon, take it down to half health. I lob a plasma nade to hit a couple of enemies.

My first reinforcement is my lightly wounded elite hacker. She successfully 35% hacks a sectopod to fight for us (unfortunately I already hit it with a plasma nade but it's still got most of its health and 2 armor).

The Psi trooper I brought with successfully 54% mind controls an Andro.

My sniper used serial to take 3x 95%+ shots, all of which get kills (thanks to the aforementioned grenade helping out by splash damaging a viper), then take a 60% Deadeye shot to OHK the Elite Shield-bearer. Then, since all 4 shots were kills, I got to reload my sniper rifle straight after all that too.

This is all second turn, have taken no hits yet because the enemies haven't fired. I'm almost scared to end my turn because this good luck is NOT going to last.

Wait, you can get plasma weapons and better armor? What do I have to research? Fuck! I was afraid something like this would happen. I suppose I'll have to roll back to an earlier save and do the last two missions over again. Fucking shit.

Either way, how much more mission is there after the two Gatekeepers?

Yea, gotta research elerium cores to open up the warden armor and plasma weaponry iirc

you know how your shadow chamber said there were like 36 enemies on this map?

you've probably killed, like, about 25 of them so far.

also it's fucking lying

When I played that the first time I was keeping a tally in my head of how many enemies I killed. Right before the end I was thinking " o right, I'm almost at the end!"
...didn't quite work out like that

Fucking shit. At least now I know instead of butting my head against this mission for multiple tries. No way I'm getting through the gatekeepers without taking massive damage, and I'm inferring that the final encounter is even harder. So time to grind out the progression, I guess.

Ugh, it just feels like shit to know that 90% of what I played tonight didn't count and will have to be undone.

I just hopped around the locations during that particular mission where you choose three locations to attack until all of my wounded soldiers recovered. LOL.

How are you fighting those without plasma? Did you fire all your researchers? You can't save the world with interns, man.

Dump a tech, get another Ranger. Spec both your grenadiers to explosives. Carry acid grenades and flashbangs on them. Spec both your Rangers to phantoms. Carry mimic beacons on them. Keep your Medic. Spec your Sharpshooter to a Sniper.

And hopefully some of this.

So shen's last gift is a black hole which leads to an alternate universe which provides XCOM with bionic soldiers.

The science check out.

Hello guys.
How the hell you are going through Extract VIp/ Kill the VIP etc.
When landing is so far ahead and each step is a new pod triggered....:/ i've lost my 2 ironman commander saved because all of my soldiers are either dead or captured ( gear included ) . This is by far a worst mission type for me. I prefer even facility/blacksites/UFO missions but not this, which don't allow you to retreat when shit hit the fans ;/
Thanks for advices.

Are you moving at roughly max distance a turn if possible?
Fighting and moving forward?
Have any SMG or Mobility PCS?
Grenadiers to blow open shortcuts? Hacker to save a turn on the door?

Concealed Ranger should be obvious so you can move very quickly relatively safely after the first pod. Don't be afraid to blow cooldowns on the first and/or second pod either since you'll be moving a few turns after that.

These are the hardest missions in the game IMO (besides some of the story centric ones) just because of the time pressure. Still, two main principles that really help me out for them are Phantom rangers to scout ahead (a must in any mission, IMO) and, if necessary, use a grenade to blow open shortcuts through buildings. One well placed grenade can save you an entire turn of maneuvering, and sometimes that's the difference between evacing everyone or having 3 people captured.

Just finished the Final Mission.

Man FUCK that mission. It honestly crossed the line from tough but relatively fair to actually pretty mean spirited and frustrating rather than challenging.

But seriously, dont worry about a spoiler here: save all your good stuff until the last part of the final mission. And gear against Psi attacks wouldn't hurt.

I honestly felt like i was doing the entire encounter wrong, something that didn't occur during most of the game for me.

But if You just have a bad luck round where all of your guys missed shots + new pods appear, then how can you run into them in next round if there is no proper cover :/
i must have a really bad luck with this kind of missions.
At the begining it was simple, always make it in time, but when more advanced soldiers appeard then this mission go into deep shit, and even then you cannot even retreat.

Man the Avenger defense almost had me sweating there, especially cause you can pop 3 or so pods pretty close at the start like it or not.

Actually cleared the side the distruptor was on, ran a heavy out into the open out of position (I murdered everything a turn ago though) and fired a rocket to clear LOS for my sniper. LOL

Can the base defense mission happen more than once? I assume "evasive maneuvers" also has a hidden die roll associated with it?

I've had evasion manouver and i managed to evade it :) so i assume it is a roll

So... ever since I got 5. Yes 5 mimic beacons, legendary has become much simpler. I feel dirty though, almost like I'm cheating because the AI is really crappy when it comes to mimic beacons. They will always opt for the mimic beacon if in sight, even when other soldiers are much more exposed.

I just don't see how you can do it without a ton of mimic beacons or extremely heavy ordinance though. And currently I simply can't afford the suits.

I got 2 UFO hunts, the first my avenger dodged, the second it didn't.

For some reason I thought it was associated with how much power you have for engines or something? Idk where I got that idea.

Just started playing my first game after the hotfix and the game seems buggier and worse performing than before. My specialist just got stuck in mid-air unable to move (but, thankfully, able to shoot and use all their abilities) after the roof they were standing on collapsed underneath. Hmm.

Same here. My game ran very well on release tbh. Now it doesn't run very well at all. I often drop into the low 30's. First playthrough I almost never dropped below 60 even on the final mission. That and wierd hangup like you mentioned.

Although I wonder if I'm causing some of this by using the "Stop wasting my time" Mod.

I feel that this hacking description needs a little more detail:

"Soldier gains complete immunity from the next 2 attacks"

What I thought this meant was that my specialist was invincible for the next two attacks, so I ran her out into the open to draw enemy fire. Of course, what it meant was:

"Soldier gains complete immunity from the next 2 poison/stun/psionic etc effects"

RIP Miss Specialist, critical hit to death.

One of the very few missions that I reloaded was one that went to absolute heck because I hacked a tower and mind controlled an enemy. This, despite saying nothing of the sort, instantly broke stealth and triggered two pods. There are some things the game really needs to be better about telling you.

Anyone else unable to even get past the launcher after the hotfix? I verified the cache, restarted Steam and PC and it still won't start. 52 hours in, on the last mission too...

Yesterday I had a "that's bullshit" moment. Rescue VIP mission, I managed to get in front of the door while being in concealment and having clear eyes on a couple of pods. I had enough turns to spend just waiting for them to continue their patrol so I could enter and rescue the VIP without any risk. But the game said "FUCK NO, I'll gather all the pods jus in front of the door and wait for you to start moving you little shit".

The enemies did nothing besides standing there waiting and forcing me to break concealment. I managed to complete the mission, but it made me go nuts.

They are meant to guard the VIP tho

Yes, but they were patroling all around, but suddenly they decided to gather there. I tried loading a previous save game to see how they behaved, and they did the same exact thing on the other side of the building.
