Yakuza 0. 1/24/17 Less than a month to go. Let's make a difference.

It's so weird, I honestly don't think many reviewers even played it much or through to completion. When I read through their reviewers there's almost no discussion of the very slow pacing in Saejima's section and the complete absence of fighting in Haruka's section.

Prior to its release in its West I felt the Haruka sections would bring down reviewers opinion of the game but to my surprise it didn't seem to effect the scores. As for me the Haruka sections where a pleasant surprise, ended up being my second favourite character section behind Kiryu.

Perhaps reviewers felt it added some much needed variation? This is my only worry with Yakuza 0's scores if reviewers are going to start saying it becomes to repetitive by the end, hopefully not cause it looks fantastic.

I came to post this.

I believe this is the first time they do a quicklook for a Yakuza game. Here's hoping it can sell it to some people.

Na they done 5 and seemed to really enjoy it, that's what got me into the series, I remember it from when I was younger but never got into it.

Just while I am watching the GB QL, couple of questions, firstly, are things explained well for a new Yakuza player?, seem to be a lot of context sensitive button presses etc.

Lastly, saving, can you save anywhere, or are there checkpoint saves?

At the end of the video they say that everything is pretty well explained compared to the other games.

As for the saves, there are checkpoints mid-missions and phone booths in free roam sections.

Thanks, one of my biggest issues with some games is the lack of "save anywhere" or long drawn out checkpoints, I often have to exit out of a game at short notice.

Isn't that the point? How is that a negative? Haruka's section was great, and there were dance battles. Not to mention all the different crap you had to do as an idol, like TV appearances, the creepy running game, and the like.

Well I read alot of comments in the Yakuza 5 thread and the OT saying the Saejima section was very slow but i don't really recall any of the reviewers mentioning it. It's also just my own personal opinion but Haruka's section also went on for a bit too long. I don't recall exactly how long her section was, maybe 5 to 6 hours or so. I definitely enjoyed it to begin with because it was a great change of pace, but then I found myself wanting to get back to a regular character with fighting but the story just kept going on and on.

I mean its fine, reviewers are under a time limit and all, but its something that pretty much was missed, and I think a lot of fans said that bit was kinda boring.

I think the interesting thing is that everyone has their own personal favourite Yakuza game and characters in these games.

I'll likely be snoozing when the reviews hit, but looking forward to waking up to that sweet 95 metacritic game of the generation.

Realistically probably mid 80s

I'm not even going to guess the metascore. I consider everything above, like... 60 positive, so I guess I could pretty confidently say it's going to be positive at least.

Pumped for this, but I still need to get through Yakuza 5. I'm a few chapters in, and figure I should finish it before starting this one. Hopefully it doesn't take me too long...

Going to be optimistic and say 85.

Previously said 80. Anything above 80 should be great now that people are streaming the game.
 
So I haven't beaten 5 yet, and probably won't in the near future but I really want to jump into 0. Does anyone know if there are any references or retroactive foreshadowing to 5 in 0? I can't imagine there would be, but I still wanted to check.

Actually, there is one Easter egg in the dancing side missions that have a character from 5 appear. Not the end of the world if you've not played 5 yet, but its a cool little nod none the less.

I'll check. Yeah game isn't hard but I'll come upon groups of enemies that seem to almost stun lock me from barely being able to do anything. Hehe.

That's probably it then, I had it equipped thinking it would lead to more random fight encounters from the description, but it just makes the enemies attack quickly all at once which is great if you want a challenge but groups of 4 scrubs were handling me like a boss fight.

One thing, does anyone know when I can play as the other guy on the cover? I checked the options and there's no way to switch from the beginning. I'm guessing he'll eventually show up in the story?

It will be several hours into the game before it switches. You play a couple of story chapters with one, it switches to the other, repeat.

I didn't miss it, but I had played the import. There's no similar feeling in Yakuza 0 of boring chapters or a lack of plot progression.

Yakuza 0's focus on refinement over ambition proved to be the right decision. This game features a very well-told story that's filled with an assortment of great characters and memorable moments. It's also a breakout moment for Goro Majima. He tends to get the short end of the stick when it comes to characterisation, but here, Majima really comes into his own. The style select sub-system is a fantastic addition, because it allows for a level of flexibility that hasn't been seen in any of the previous entries. The expected massive amount of side content also benefits from an increased level of interdependency. Pursuing the multitude of amenities around town is rewarding in so many ways. This entry raises the bar for both the Yakuza series and action RPGs.

At this point, the property's trademark formula is seriously starting to wear thin, but when it comes down to it, there's nothing quite like Yakuza 0. It combines unapologetically mature themes and violence with brilliantly dumb minigames and hysterical side quests, resulting in a thoroughly memorable experience. Bolstered by a gripping story that's packed with great characters, fans of Japanese games or even Japanese culture owe it to themselves to give this a prequel a shot. Yakuza 0 is fantastic place to start a love affair with Kamurocho's finest, and what's more, it's one of the best entries in the series to date.

That's a harsh one, an outlier, but a harsh one. What was their problem?

Combat being too simple and repetitive from what I could gather with a quick read.

Honestly, the combat does start very simple and you need to go out of your way to build it up. If you go just in the main story, you probably won't see a fraction of what's possible. And unfortunately this will happen with a lot of people.
