I love NLG, I truly do. Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon was a great game.

But I feel like the backslash is justified. People have been clamoring for a classic Metroid game for years, and Nintendo has been shown to be really receptive to fans recently, what with stuff like adding fan-requested characters to Smash and hell, even releasing Mother stateside for the first time. But this is not only a significant departure from what people wanted, it also makes them feel like they're not being listened to. About the rest of your comment, "fun" or "bad" seems really subjective terms not suited for a game none of us has played yet - I think it looks bad but we all know how 3DS games look on high-res screens, and it might as well be fun.

But my point is, this is such a departure for a franchise for which people have a really solid grasp on what they want to see it turn into, it would be silly if NLG hadn't expected this sort of reaction.

It's as if they'd revealed the Star Fox prototype to be a small part of Star Fox Adventures 2.

The general idea to not use the nunchuck was the problem. There was no decent control scheme that could be made with Wiimote-only. They even talk about what a hassle it was struggling to implement everything in a Wiimote-only control scheme.
 
Infinite sadness is upon me after this Metroid reveal. The franchise is and was one of the greatest ever, and was so, so much more than this triviality.

It absolutely changes things. Everything is tied a cutscene. You can get the wave beam only after running around in a circle. The grapple beam only unlocks after a specific cutscene. Power bombs are just unlocked without notice. It more so than invisible walls locks down the progression. Instead of you as the player finding the upgrade, possible sequence breaking to get it sooner, the game doles it out at a very specific moment. Things like using the Plasma Beam in the Flaahgra fight in Metroid Prime or doing a low percent run in Zero Mission are impossible with that system.

But moreso than pure mechanics, it's the difference between feeling like you found it on your own vs led around by the nose. It's the heart of why Metroid (and Metroidvanias) are so beloved.
 
I'm willing to give this game a chance, pending some good reviews. Just because it isn't the Metroid people wanted doesn't mean it's bad.

It really does add to the whole feeling that Samus is made powerless in her own game. Does she even do a single thing the whole time?

But I guess it's not sexist because she could have been a man instead? lol it ruins the character regardless.
 
Wonder what sort of fate will eventually befall this game. With its disastrous announcement, it almost feels like the whole thing is doomed before it even has a chance. I can't foresee people ever really warming up to this title much, as the genre is a hard sell on the platform in the first place and all the anger over the mismatched franchising may keep the potential userbase for a game like this from paying it any notice.

I feel really bad for Next Level Games. After Luigi's Mansion, they were riding high enough that Nintendo fans would have eaten up anything they put out. This game could kill off that good will in the blink of an eye.

It's not even a proper Hunters sequel. Hunters, for all its flaws, actually had a lot of potential for a good sequel. This isn't it.

It sure as hell isn't a decent Metroid game.
 
Y'know, they can still make more traditional Metroid games after this one. Like, the existence of this game doesn't prevent them from making more Metroids.

There is no "Metroid cycle" beyond shitty revisionist history courtesy of Other M fans. Metroid Prime was critically acclaimed on release and sold over 2 million copies.

But you don't leave a game hanging for six years and then come back with a spin off that's stylistically entirely removed from the series and not expect backlash

Now, I know E3 is that time of the year where we all turn out brains off, but do you realize how childish and downright mean this is? There's a team working hard to make this game, despite all the shitstorm surrounding it, it looks fun, yet you want it to be cancelled. You're literally saying to dozens of people "hey you know all this you've been working on for months/years? Yeah, it should all be canned."

Maybe so, but the backlash wouldn't be as bad as it is right now if a mainline Metroid would have been announced too.

Even I'd dare to say people would be possitive about it. "Nice, a multiplayer 3DS Metroid game that will keep me busy until the big deal on Wii U"

They are the best Mario sports title, man. You would know if you played them :(
Punch out was ok, just ok, but the adrenaline Super Mario Strikers gave me was just too much.
God I miss those!
 
I feel like this would have been more accepted if the announcement came right after a main Metroid announcement. It could have been a nice Fusion/Prime combo scenario all over again. Personally, it looked like it could be a fun distraction, but not for $40...
Says the guy who paid $60 for Splatoon and enjoys it immensely.

Why is Falcon on the left? If anything, his helmet should be hanging on the wall at the right. =P Poor Samus... and definitely poor Falcon. I don't think he even got an anniversary. At least the fans gave Samus an unofficial party.
 
I think a lot of anger and hate towards the game isn't due to the game itself (it looks FINE), but because it's a slightly goofy spin-off instead of "OMG Retro's Metroid Prime 4!" or "OMG Metroid DREAD!"

It's a quirky spin-off title, right next to Metroid Prime Pinball. And Pinball was fantastic for being, you know, a Metroid-themed pinball game.

Yes, on release. But there were definitely skeptics pre-release. I was one of them. Then I played it. Wound up liking it more than Fusion, which I also loved to death. Prime deserved every sale.

It's literally the only first-person game, shooter or otherwise, that I've enjoyed (Technically including its two sequels but NOT the DS side game). I've also played Mirror's Edge, for reference.
Did not enjoy Edge, unfortunately.

Smash 4 came out on the 15th anniversary of the Smash series, which launched in 1999.
 
I don't think people wanted anything like this when asking for a new Metroid.

I hope they don't use the reception this game is getting to kill the series.

I don't think they know what they're doing. I think they looked at Other M and said 'we can't do that again' and that's why we have this, ignoring why Other M did as poorly as it did.

Whilst the reveal was highly disappointing and that I have zero interest, I have to agree with you.

NLG is probably working very hard on this, and I imagine their feelings are probably crushed working for so long and seeing such negativity. The guys are only Human, and that petition is immature.

Sorry the game disappoints you all, but NLG are trying.

Hunters was fun as hell to me. For a DS game, it had decent MP, great atmosphere/art and pretty fun levels.

This looks worse than a DS game by several times.

Yeah. I'm all for saying it looks awful and encouraging people not to buy it, but demanding it be cancelled is a little much.

If Other M didn't permanently kill the series, then this certainly won't.

Also, I DON'T want this game to be cancelled. I WANT it to be released so Nintendo can learn their lesson and make the next Metroid game even better as a result of the criticisms. :)

If it was it's own thing people would think it looks bad. But throw in six years of waiting only for Nintendo to reveal A Bad Game for Idiots and you got an element that amplifies people's distaste.
 
I said a while ago that Nintendo has no clue what to do with Metroid.

I think this serves as confirmation that Nintendo indeed has no clue what to do with Metroid.
 
Just watched the trailer. This is the most disappointing announcement in a while. Almost as disappointing as the Breath of Fire 6 reveal.

They deserve better.

I do wonder how big of a project this is though. Perhaps not all of their team are working on it?
