If NX is a handheld only, I will be disappointed.
I've been expecting Nintendo's next platform to be a hybrid home console and portable device. I'm confident that's what the NX will be.
Wirelessly connects to a TV with a USB dongle and acts as somewhat as a Wii U Gamepad/controller that other controllers or NX systems can pair with for multiplayer, and can be taken out of the house as a traditional handheld, as well.

Except that we've already had Iwata say numerous times that it won't be a hybrid. Not only did he specifically say that he wasn't looking to make two consoles into one, but he also said that he wants the console & handheld to be separate but "like brothers" & is looking at multiple form factors of one platform (same architecture, same OS, different form factors & power levels). Your confidence is misplaced, & was already shot down.

Why are people saying New 3DS owners are going to be upset about a new handheld? I got my n3DS totally expecting the NX to drop in 2016, Nintendo always offers an upgrade by the end of a generation.
If anything the kind of people who wanted to get in on the n3DS are the ones who are going to be first in line for the NX.

I want it to be a handheld with one screen and I want it to become a console when you get home by having an HDMI port or airplay/chromecast like tech. It's about time you can play the same game home or on the go.
Drop the dual screens and 3d gimmick, give me the option to play it on a tv when I'm in the house and I'll bite day 1. (I'll probably bite day 1 anyway)

I know I'll buy it, but honestly, I prefer gaming on Wii U/PS4/Xbox One at home and my iPhone everywhere else since I always have my phone with me. The days of me carrying around a flip phone and a gaming device for entertainment are pretty much gone, I don't even take my handhelds with me on vacation anymore.
IMO, the touch screen on the 3DS hurts the system more than it helps outside of backwards compatibility.
3DS games would benefit more from one large screen that can be touched by the player to directly influence the action, IMO.
I have yet to play a 3DS game where the touch screen didn't feel like an afterthought, dead weight, or just flat-out unnecessary.
Playing games like Tearaway on the Vita and the Mario games on the Wii U show how much more important it is to have the ability to directly touch and interact with the main screen than having a dinky touch screen separate from it to poke in some games to manage inventory and macros that could easily be moved to a larger, singular touch screen and work just as well.

I don't really like the 3DS in form factor and I don't care for the 3D either. Were those fixed, I might have some amount of interest. Realistically though, handhelds just don't have the appeal they once did when I was a child. I don't have a commute on public transportation, I'm not going to sit and play a game on a handheld while my wife is sitting next to me doing something else, and If I'm going to sit down and play a game, I want to play it with the best visuals and sound possible (My entertainment center). There's just not a lot of room in my life for a handheld anymore, so i doubt I'd pick one up.

Well I love the main series Pokémon games so I am not bothered. In fact I am expecting the NX to be the 3DS successor.
However I do think that NX is going to be a Handheld and console (not a hybrid) that share the same OS architecture, something akin to how Apples has the same OS system for all their products.

To be fair, the more speculation gets bandied about, the more Nintendo is pressured into revealing actual details about NX. Nintendo needs to control the messaging on the NX and the more other people try to define the NX the less they are able to do so.

Indifferent, because I already have PS Vita as my main handheld for the next 10 years for handheld gaming. Also have a tablet already which I use occasionally to play some games on it.
So I probably wouldn't be interested in another device for mobile gameplay, especially one from Nintendo, because recently, they have a bad track record with handhelds. Would never want a 240p or 360p handheld with outdated hardware and garbage build quality when I'm used to 720p, 1080p on mobile displays.

I think you're overselling the affect of these threads and whether Nintendo has any grasp at all on what the message should even be. Honestly, based on their recent NX comments, their vagueness seems to suggest they don't yet know how to sell it. Speculation won't push that process along.
You may want to reevaluate your assumptions. It's already been confirmed that it isn't a console/handheld hybrid.

I keep seeing this come up time after time, but the only "proof" I can remember for this was just more speculation on what Nintendo *should* do and people extrapolating vague NX comments to bolster those hopes.

I do think it would be smart for Nintendo to focus their game development efforts on a single hardware architecture and software/services platform. Most people seem to imagine that taking the form of a single handheld device with some kind of TV connectivity – but I think it would be fine, and preferable in some ways, for it to remain separate pieces of hardware.
Have two devices, one a handheld with a single lower-end smartphone-grade touchscreen, and the other a small TV console + controller, sharing the same smartphone/tablet-grade hardware, same basic OS, same dev environment. (Maybe give the console a bit more horsepower – an extra CPU core, a bigger GPU – for higher-resolution output.) Have them both support the same games, all digital, with cross-buy, and saves and whatnot synced through a common account and services. Price them each at ~$200.
Execute on that plan well, and I think that could be a decent way for them to continue to have their own little ecosystem. The ship has probably sailed for the foreseeable future on competing directly with MS and Sony, or having a major 3rd-party ecosystem – so if they want to continue having their own platform, they need to consolidate and maximize their ability to support it alone.

It's just an example where the second screen improves the experience. I wish SOTN and the GBA trilogy could've gotten DS/3DS ports.

You might want to temper your expectations a little more.
Again, that has already been shot down. The NX isn't that kind of hybrid.

I think it will be. And I prefer it as a handheld. I don't think I'll get a Nintendo console again any time soon but I wouldn't mind a cheaper handheld.

Not gonna happen. Nintendo wants us buying more hardware not less. If you want to play NX games on a tv you'll have to buy an NX console for that.
I agree with this but unlike Vita/TV I don't expect the same chipset in both the console and handheld.
