How would you feel about the NX being a handheld?

I would like for NX to be a handheld.

Nintendo hasn't disappointed me with their handhelds yet. Sure, 3DS could have had nicer screens but I'm one of the few that actually liked and appreciated the stereoscopic 3D. I've enjoyed practically every game I've gotten for my 3DS, other than PM: Sticker Star.

They've disappointed me over and over with their home consoles since the Wii though. I've had enough. No way am I spending more than $150 on a home console from them ever again, not worth it for only a handful of first-party games.

Since Nintendo handhelds are usually much cheaper than their home consoles, it's not as big of a loss if the handheld ends up being a first-party drought-ridden wasteland. So I do hope NX will be a handheld.
 
Figured the nx was having a two pronged approach.
1. A handheld with a new architecture at about WiiU level
2. A console built with the same architecture but with far more robust specs. Utilize both devices if you want bc with wiiU titles. Release an XL version of the handheld that comes packed in an optional bundle with the console release a year or so later. Then release the standalone XL at a later date

That's exactly what I'm expecting. My official prediction on the NX handheld is to have a 540p screen, and that'll automatically take less grunt than the Wii U's typical 720p. I could see it easily having a better CPU. Won't be hard to outmatch the Espresso.

I disagree. Dual screen set-up is useful in a lot of games, but almost all of them would work just fine with one screen. On most DS games that I played, the extra screen was quite useless and seems to be used just for the sake of using it.

You can only focus on one screen at the time anyway.

One good display like the PS Vita is perfect imho.

I agree with this.

I thought the PS Vita 2000 looked a bit cheap on images that I saw, but I have one now, and it looks and feels pretty slick. Definitely has a touch of premium Sony-quality to it (well it was designed by the guy who designed the very first Walkman apparently, he definitely did a fantastic job). Definitely a nice change from the Fisher Price-feel of Nintendo handhelds.
 
This is a semantic thing, and I understand why we do it without "official" names for the individual members in this family of systems, but I really believe NX is just the name of the OS Nintendo plans to use and I may have found something pointing towards that:

Notice the switching in terminology between "video game platform" and "video game system". Just another little piece to add to the puzzle.

The only way I would be interested in the NX would be if it was the successor to the 3DS.
 
I think it will be a handheld at heart with the opposite functionality of the gamepad. The handheld will stream to the TV as opposed to the Wii U streaming to the gamepad. I guess we'll see.

Nope, wouldn't be hard to beat at all, especially since most of the Wii U's bloated cost is from the Gamepad anyway.
 
I really hope it is a handheld. The 3DS will be five years old by 2016, this along with the fact that Nintendo is expecting high sales points to it being a new handheld. Handhelds and mobile are the Japanese gamer's platforms of choice. If those Android rumours are true, a device that features best of both worlds is likely to be a huge success. Mobile tech is crazy these days with all the HD screens being pumped out for tablets and phones, with some costing less than $100. I'm hoping for 720p at the very least.

One of the things with something like the 3DS vs. mobile, is that the dedicated hardware is assumed to be gaming constantly. You have these mobile devices (such as my own phone) that has a 1080p screen and it takes quite a bit of juice to power that many pixels. Screen is the number one battery drain on portable hardware, so I'd rather they stay somewhat conservative with resolution. But if the NX is flexible, it'd be cool to let folks get a beefier system with a higher res screen and larger battery to power it.
 
I hate the way handhelds usually feel (ergonomics wise) and really don't enjoy tilting my neck down at a small screen for hours at a time.
 
I want it to be a handheld actually. What I'm hoping for is for a smarter evolution of the Wii U formula. A handheld that you can play anywhere but can also hook it up to your TV seemlessly.
 
How would you feel if we stopped having pointless, baseless speculation threads about NX specifically designed to get people outraged about things that haven't happened?
 
I love the idea of NX being a hybrid handheld/ps vita tv system and it seems the most logical approach for Nintendo to have a current gen console that's a bit of a hybrid, considering the success of DS/3DS and the failure of Wii U. Not to mention Japan's obsession with mobile gaming.
 
Best case scenario for me. I want a handheld that gets all of Nintendo's first party titles, as well as absorbs the Japanese 3rd party support from lack of a Vita successor.

It would be like folding the Wii U, 3DS, and Vita libraries into one handheld device, and that would be a gaming dream come true for me. It may even be the only piece of next gen hardware that I'd want to buy.
 
Being a Handheld with more powerful than 3DS would be better than being a console but weaker than WiiU one. :)
No matter whether NX will be Handheld or Console, I'll be an early adapter for NX.

This is an interesting strategy. Let's keep making threads with pointed questions and wait for a Matt response. 10 threads later we'll have more tangible information.
 
I think they really need to move on from the Wii U. But, honestly, I've been much more into their handheld stuff in the last 8 years. The time is right for a follow up to the 3DS, while technically a Wii U follow up is too soon. But I also am not confident in Nintendo supporting the Wii U (w/ Zelda U Sized AAA content) for 2 more years. Whereas the 3DS has been very healthy content wise.

So eh. On a personal level I guess I would be more excited for their next handheld. But I do think they need a home console refresh.
 
I'd prefer if it weren't, but as long as the pixel density isn't totally shit-tier like the 3DS I'd give it a chance if the games were there.
 
An online handheld that plays Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Super Mario 3D World and Zelda U?

I just hope Nintendo doesn't abandon 3D. I will miss it if they do.

If it can output to a monitor, I just need a comfortable controller.

If it's purely a handheld with the same shit ergonomics that handhelds tend to have, well, kill me now before Nintendo inevitably does.
 
If it is, expect it to be 720p at most. People will complain no matter what. I just want improved Vita specs but with a lot better screen resolution. Vita is by far my favourite handheld ever, except for the fact that it lacks unique and first party library games. At least it be easier for me to swallow a new handheld than a console since I got a Wii U not so long ago.

I thought the 3ds (at least the OG) had decent pixel density for its time. If you played an XL I feel sorry for you. It is the screen resolution that bothers me the most.

PS Vita is the next-gen system (PS4, XB1, 3DS, Wii U, PS Vita) with the highest density of first-party games during 1-year launch period. Now that's a FACT.

With density of games I mean, # first-party games / month during first and second year on the market.
 
I'd love it and prefer a new handheld over a new console next year. The 3DS is quite old now, whereas the Wii U is still young. Moreover, a new console in 2016 would be sent to die.

Either ways, during launch period helps nothing despite after so many years with one, Sony stopped caring due to lacklusters sales. Sure plenty of third party games but they usually have been a lot of dungeon crawlers, C-tier rpgs and indies on other platforms. The PSP had a lot more to offer, but thanks to backwards compatibility that I can enjoy on VITA.

Nintendo just have to step up with the hardware, ergonomics (the 3DS wasnt too comfortable to hold), and specs. Obviously after 5 years it should be noticable.

During launch period, a lot of jellyfish were swimming in the ocean. Nothing helps the fact that there was a decrease in the jellyfish population in the Pacific ocean at that time, and Sony didn't care. Jellyfish have roamed the seas for at least 500 million years, making them the oldest multi-organ organism part of the kingdom of animals that has ever lived on earth, and still is ever present in the oceans to this day.

Sure, there are various organisms that have come close, but still far off from 500 million years.

A handheld would be definitely more interesting, since there's basically no competition (as much as I adore my Vita) and it's always been their strength. I also want to see how much Nintendo is willing to make it not look completely outdated.

I'm just really interested in seeing the first at least reasonably high resolution screen on a Nintendo handheld.

The next handheld should also act as a controller similar to the Gamepad.
That would allow more synergy with their console.

I might actually consider a handheld like that, otherwise whatever it is I will pass.
 
I prefer handhelds so it would be way more interesting to me than a Nintendo console.
I am not sure if Nintendo can deliver something that fits my preferences though.

It really wouldn't work just as well. Games like Etrian Odyssey become nearly unplayable with one screen--that's a future I don't want to live in.
 
NX is going to be a 3ds with Wii U graphics and Wii U TV streaming. Cell phones will be like extra controllers for MP.
 
The only way I will get one is if it can be used as a dedicated home console that is a nice little jump over the Wii U. It does not have to be a PS4, just a noticeable leap.
