Final Fantasy VII PS4 |OT| One last time before the remake

FF7 is a treasure

but dont many ff fans consider FF 6 to be superior?

what are your guys opinions on that

I haven't heard that sentiment echoed really strongly since I used to hang out in Final Fantasy AOL chats. in a world where (i think) a majority of people consider FFX the best Final Fantasy game ever, FF7 gets a lot more cred that FF6 now.

FF7 is going up against FF6 in the GameFAQs greatest game ever battle in a couple of days. we'll see

Hijacking this for my question - see the black bar at the top of the image? That's what I'm talking about. I have those bars on top and bottom, looks like it's actually putting out the image that way. Kinda disappointing.

Try going in the PS4 display settings. IIRC there is some option to resize the window to the proper size.

Should I buy this? Didn't know it came with a theme, dammit square.

(It's also on sale...)

It's only $10, the theme alone will make any buyers remorse go away instantly.

guys...it wont let me save

when i go to the main menue the save option is blacked out and i can't use it

You have get the pop up window when you walk into the save thingy, that's when you know you can save (you do know you can't just save anywhere right?).

There weren't any changes to the PC version that would make the old Brady Games guide useless, were there?

I think the only changes were some bug fixes and some engrish translation fixes. Im also very happy it has the proper sound track and not some weird Midi medly that doesn't sound like the PS1. So far I'm very happy with it.

My cold, dead heart has grown the like this game. The graphical refinements make it easier on the eyes and the fast forward button makes exploring less tedious.

It's my birthday and I only played through FF7 once in the past, so what the hell I bought it! Lol.

Ah good. As much as I want that newer one that came out, the BradyGames guide has been my trusted companion since I was young.

I read the guide for fun back in '98-99 before my parents decided I was old enough to play lol.

downloaded :D

i'm so busy with work, supposed to be working like 12-14 hours in my office a day straight for next week or so, and i really want to save this until i can play 6-7 hours a night during my mini-vacation so i downloaded dark cloud to play for a few nights

but damn i'm too excited q_q maybe i'll just go really slow and grind-y for the Midgar section and time it so I finish Midgar right when my vacation starts :D

I often hear people say the 3d in this game has aged poorly, but I absolutely love it's look. Gauraud shaded polygonal characters have this crispness to them that I find really pleasing to the eye. Games like this and Tobal No 1&2 have this pop that resonates with me more than a lot of the textured stuff. I kinda wish there was more like it today. Playing this version of FF VII and it's crispness makes me feel like I'm interacting with solid plastic figurines.

I guess some of the limbs look a bit goofy still tho...but it's a kind of goofiness I find endearing.

I've never played FF7. I was way too young when it came out. All I know is it is highly revered and I probably missed out on a real gem.

Should I wait for the remake?

If you can get past the dated polygonal characters, absolutely. To my eyes its as classic as Mario Bros, timeless. To new eyes I know it will look dated.

Some of the things were quite dated but even when I was a kid when I played it, it was really fun. I didn't get some of the darker themes but overall the experience was good.

It was my third RPG (excluding Pokemon). I played a bit of Chrono Trigger and FFVI before that too.

only if you're only interest is the story I suppose... I mean, if the main thing you want is a strongly presented story, then maybe I could see waiting

I could understand why some people may appreciate the story more playing VII-R for the first time if they're not really fond of old school graphics

that said, it looks like the Remake will definitely be its own take on the game, and there will be enough changes where each version is worth playing. so I guess it just depends on which game you want to experience the story first.

Since this game has the stat and speed boost, I'm guessing this is going to be a real easy and quick platinum, ya?

Happy Birthday!

I'm also coming into this kinda fresh. The 2 times I finished this game were back in the PS1 days where I was very young. Now I'm sure I'll pick up on things I've forgotten or maybe didn't understand back then.

Well the grind is a lot faster now, so there's that.

All we need now is for someone to confirm the cheats work on the weapons.

It definitely makes most every trophy easier. There are a few missables but the 99,999,999 gil one seems worrying, unless you can glitch.

Heh, I couldn't find the game on the Australian store. But clicking on the link someone provided to the EU version automatically redirected to the Australian version. 'Only' $16.45, including the theme as well. Not too bad.
Well, a bit pointless now since you can access it on the online store, but on PS4 just open the store, scroll down to games -> new releases and just move along until you see FFVII.
Next to it are the PS2 games as well (starting at $22.95)

Is that the sale price? In the Canadian store it's regular 15.99 but on sale for 10.87
Australia doesn't get that sale. Game has been up for like 6 hours now and it's remained at $16.45.

Thanks for the responses folks.. I think I'll sit on it for a couple days and make up my mind once I finish a game I'm playing through atm.

The dated graphics do put me off a bit but I'm sure I could see past that to embrace the story. I suppose it's whether I want to go through that or just hold out and get the not quite original remake.

So did they fix the mouth thing for npcs from the steam version? The main party all had normal mouths, but npcs were stuck with the open mouth for some reason. The screenshots on psn make it look like they just got rid of everyone but the party's mouths

I think what holds up more than anything in the game is Uematsu's soundtrack. It's a reason to play the game right there.

It looks like there's some sort of weird smoothing filter that's being applied ina couple spots; namely, the sign at the top left and the platform in the foreground on the right. Were the original assets that smeared, or did they SuperEagle a few elements other than the text?

That's definitely texture filtering. That screenshot is really turning me off of this port. Can't stand that kind of filter. I like seeing PS1 textures in all their pixelly goodness.

The x3 speed is a gift. FFVIII/FFIX ports with x3 speed, please, Square! (Especially poor FFIX.)

I played FFVII for the first time after it had been out for about a decade, and I remember being really surprised at the time by how well it held up, with both the story and the soundtrack especially. (I think I was pretty addicted to FFVII within the first 20 mins, it's been a love affair ever since.) The pre-rendered backgrounds are still gorgeous and beautifully designed. Definitely give it a go!

A IX port with the 3x speed would be a miracle. I love that game but find it hard to go back to, because I feel it has by far the slowest battle system of the 3 PS1 games.

I've always felt VII and VIII were pretty snappy, but IX just seems really slow.

I'll probably pick this up when I have money.

I have the original PS1 copy and I usually have no need to double-dip on PS1 classics... But the fact that it's really a port on a proper console... Yeah I want it.

The turbo speed thing sounds like a fantastic addition. I got so close to the end of this game years ago, but the PS2 I was playing it on started freezing every time I hit the CG cutscene where you
parachute into Midgar
so I was never able to finish it. Same thing happened really late in FFIX, too, and weirdly enough that PS2 used to freeze at the end of the credits in MGS1 every time. That was a bad time for me :P

Anyway, I don't have the patience for JRPG grinding any more, but that 3x speed option has me strongly considering getting this.

Screw it. I'm weak. I've bought it :3

I've always wanted to try it along with a few other classics I missed out on. And the free theme looks kick ass.

Oh backlog, how I add to thee.

No. That won't fix anything. Just make sure your tv is not overscannig and make sure the white lines are matched up in the display area settings in the ps4 display settings menu.

Anything you do beyond there is just going to Fuck up everything for all other games. So don't mess with it.

Bought in in 97 just cause of the hype and found it boring and i'm nearly falling for it again, clever these marketing people.

Just started playing. 3x speed is an absolute godsend. The game's original speed was fine before but as I've now got much less time than I used to it's very handy indeed. :D I like the subtle improvements over the PS1 original too, not regrets about buying it again.

Isn't it just outputting the image like that so that the game scales perfectly? PS2 games on PS4 do the same thing. I don't know why you guys are mentioning overscan. If he had overscan then the image would be getting cut off now showing more

Launching it at a sensible cheaper than expected price, adding a great theme, launching it alongside Remake footage, throwing in x3 speed and it looking fairly decent compared to the existing PS3 port...

Good job Square-Enix! You mess up sometimes but you handled this quite well. New translation and a pan and scan wide-screen mode would have been nice but screw it
