Console Digital Only Sales increased 70% year over year. How do you feel about that?

If the prices of digital games on consoles were better I'd never buy physical again, but as is aside from some sales, digital prices are redonk high on PSN.
 
I'm digital on console until price parity exists. When I can get Bloodborne for 16 bucks at Best Buy when it was still 59.99 on PSN, I'm not giving up those kind of deals.

PSN discounts have been getting better lately from what I've seen at least.
 
Great. I never had much of an attachment to physical game packages, the only thing keeping me from going full digital or even overwhelmingly digital is the paltry amount of storage space on PS4.
 
I just want companies to ensure that they keep their digital stores open or have some kind of contingency plans if their services ever go down.

Or some kind of games vault.

And they contain a transferable license so they have greater utility/value.

Still, the online-only future happened a whole generation ago. Mass Effect 3 is a good example. You don't need to play it online to get the best outcomes...if you download the Extended Cut patch...

This gen is far worse and Microsoft is no worse than Sony. A PS3 or PS4 that never goes online is a console that plays games that ship broken from day one. Even the Wii U has essential, if not critical, patches for offline games like Pikmin 3.

You are privileged, I can't afford this hobby if I can't sell or trade used games.
 
I can count on one hand how many physical games I've bought over the last two years. Digital is just so much more convenient. I do miss having physical cases to look at and put on a shelf, but I certainly don't miss having to get up to switch discs.
 
I prefer physical games, especially with the size of some AAA games increasing to ever higher amounts. But I won't say I'm against digital games.

Not a fan of digital unless it's significantly cheaper. Even if prices were the same, I'd still go physical.

95% of my game library is physical. I'll hold onto my discs until I die.
 
It's not a big deal to me as long as the retail market stays alive. The only time I go digital is when I have no other option (like Yakuza 5).
 
I only buy digital when it's dirt cheap. Physical is still the way to go for me. I can play through a game and then resell it for nearly as much as I paid for it. If I didn't care about money, sure, all digital would be great.
 
I went all in digital at the start of the generation, but then realized I was a poor college student and needed resell my games - so I reverted back to purchasing physical media. But the convenience factor of digital only, is almost too tempting...

All my digital games are disposable but after giving it alot of thought, so are my physical ones.


There are a handful of games on last gen that I revist, even less the one previous.

I have no intention to be gaming in the next decade, least not how I do now. Its really whatever for me.
 
I was all digital until Microsoft store sale where I bought 5 retail, ended up selling all of these besides Rare Replay, which I will rebuy on digital once its cheap enough. I don't know the last time I played a bluray movie either, I rather rent a digital version then go out and rent a bluray.
 
When I look at the PSP GO and the futur support of its PSN I feel mixed.

I don't want to buy an high end system that might not stay active over the years and see the store goes offline and shit.

It's why older system are great, because I still can, in 2016, pop in a NES cartridge in my Nintendo and play Ninja Gaiden and CO.

I don't want things like P.T. Going unavailable anymore.

Main reason I avoid digital.
 
At the same price (which is almost always the case) I'll always buy physical. I'm not willing to pay 25$ or more for anything digital, that's why I haven't bought The Witness yet.
 
Who buys from physical? Lol. Seriously, digital all the way, its conviniant and easy. Preloading games a week before release has been a godsend, I can play 12am on the dot without queing up or waiting for Amazon. Digital only from here on out.
 
I buy physical when its cheap, but otherwise digital all day.

I honestly wish I could spend $5 or $10 and turn some of these physical discs into digital copies.

Maybe Microsoft was on to something.

Yep. That and gamesharing benefits with my son = no brainer. I finally admitted to myself that I never trade my physical games in, so there was no benefit in going physical anymore.

Im with you and I don't see it changing. My house is clutter free. I was a collector and sold it off. As I've gotten older, I don't need cases anymore. Don't have to wait in line at GameStop or Best Buy with BO brothers. I'm happy.

Everything will be the PSP GO at some point. Hopefully the security is cracked for each console by the time it does. The Library of Congress can deem which systems can be cracked without violating the DMCA.

Prices are left too much at the discretion of publisher.

Sales are improving, but fall far behind Steam.

No second-hand market.

Bandwidth and speeds in Canada cannot keep up with 50GB files.

See it's not even like retail is at the same price, it's actually much cheaper, and I just don't see that changing soon.

Maybe this problem is only in Europe though.
 
It's going to happen rather I like it or not. I'd be ok with it if I could trade in my digital game license for some credit or they were 10-15% cheaper since they don't have the manufacturing and shipping and retail markup added on.
 
I like selling my used games back and I love the discounts I get from GCU and Amazon Prime. So the benefits of digital downloads still don't measure up to physical. In fact, digital still flat out sucks in comparison.
 
I'm ok now with owning a few physical copies (was full DD for the past few years) but overall it's digital from me, I don't even feel like I need to upgrade my hdd from stock, just delete what I don't play anymore.

This is the big issue with digital, although I have never seen games be as low as €50. Usually €55-60.

It's much worse on PC though, where PC retail games go for €40-45 and Steam charges €60. It has gotten to the point where Steam seasonal sales are just games going for normal price.
 
As someone who starts many evenings asking who wants to play what fighting game with me, I'm all digital these days. Fighting games have awful resale value, anyway.

However, I am miffed that no one out there is offering discounts for digital. Amazon Prime and Best Buy at 20% off physical copies only. What the crap? Why are digital customers second-rate?
 
I go physical more than digital on console but do see myself moving more to the digital side as I'm getting tired of the clutter.

I have a feeling that's because the retail chains would throw a fit if digital games were consistently 10 dollars cheaper at launch.,

No kidding. They're aiming for 5mb/s as a basic necessity in northern/rural areas.

I'm not in too much of a rural area, and that's all I can get. It takes forever to download games, and I have to use a lot of digital versions.

It's depressing. Makes my depression a lot worse.

Because on console digital, there is only one place to buy games from and publishers control the prices there. PC side has all kinds of key sellers giving you deals (retail copies are digital copies), you should never buy new games from Steam Store.

It's because the digital stores are controlled by the platform holders. The platform holders don't want to undercut their retail partners.
 
Seems fine to me. My X1 is 100% digital. All my music is online, same with TV, movies, documents, photos... why not games? Putting a disc into a machine is starting to feel a bit archaic. Not that I'm lazy or anything.
 
I like to keep my games for years but many of them are now digital ... I try to buy physical versions of my personal classics and the ones I'd like my son to play eventually.

Oh yeah... On topic, I'm fine as long as I can buy physical versions of my games.

Does the fact more and more games allow you to pre-load several days before launch alleviate some of the issues?
 
Digital for multiplayer games I know I will play again and again, and single player games physical(games I won't touch after I beat them). That's how I'd like to do it.
 
I'm still mostly physical on consoles, but not because I prefer it (honestly fine either way), just because it's still a lot cheaper here. Maybe one day MS, Sony, Nintendo and everyone else will change that, though I'm not holding my breath.

I'd be very interested in seeing the growth in the UK, i'd be shocked if it's even close to a 30% year over year growth, nevermind 70%.

Some supermarkets in France offer some kind of "day one" special prices that range from 45 to 55 € if you buy a game in the first three days of release. It's not on all games obviously, but most AAAs.
Cheapest I remember was buying Watch_Dogs for like 47 € two years ago. Obviously nothing can beat that.

I don't mind digital games at all. I actually prefer digital when it comes to games I know I will play very regularly for months, like Rocket League or PvZ.

The rest though... yeah, physical all the way. Playstation Store prices are abysmal unless you only buy old-ass games or indies.
